I got a lovely piece from a fellow ARCer (thanks @kmn2christ !) of some sort of favia (?) With purple clove polyps.

Is this a favia and if so, what kind?

Any advice on trimming/killing back some of the purple cloves so it has a better chance at actually growing? I have tons of purple cloves elsewhere in my tank, so hacking some off, if necessary, won't hurt my feelings.

Looks like a blastomussa coral. I have an a Jan with the same purple polyp issue. They are prolific!! I use a razor and scrap the clove polyps away from the achan. The achan is finally gaining some ground

After you scrape it, you could also cover the area around the coral with super glue or epoxy so that the clove polyps don't regrow. That's how I deal with aiptasia that happens to come in on frags. My tank is 5 years old and still aiptasia free so I'd say it's effective 😁
