I was getting confused with all the parts of an aquarium system.
(Does the protien skimmer come before the filter sock? Those questions.)
I did a web search using "salt water coral reef aquarium piping system flow diagrams"
And I clicked on the images button, then hit search.
You will find dozens and dozens of piping flow diagrams for aquariums! Nice color diagrams.
Everything from the simplest to very complex.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Take some time and review a few of these diagrams.
It will increase your understanding by leaps and bounds. It did for me.

Here is an example furnished by Marine Depot

This is great. It would be good if there was a "reference" that was tried and tested. There are some details that I can contribute from lessons learned the hard way ..
- Add a valve to the tank's manifolds (both in and out). This will allow you to completely isolate the tank from the sump in the case of maintenance / replumbing of the sump.
- Test to ensure the tank sump does not overflow when everything is switched off (power outage). There are a number of subtleties / problems you can catch in this proceedure. Eg. ensuring there is a pin-hole or alternative way of allowing air into the overflow return pipe to ensure your tank doesn't backflow into the sump in the case of a power failure. There are many methods to do this (been bitten by this before on a 450 gallon .. wasn't pretty).
- Placement of temperature sensor / heater - ensure both are in the same chamber - counterintuitive, however, don't want to be in the situation where pump is off/heater is in the sump and temperature sensor (controller) is in the tank.

Just my humble 2 cents worth .. hope it helps someone.
