probably a very dumb question

i know this will prob be a dumb question to ask, but i need to know. i spoke with someone recently about some chemicals i am supplementing for my corals and they suggested to add magnesium to the list. i dont have a clue what i would be supplementing magnesium for, could someone help me out?? what does it do and why is it needed??

Magnesium makes the calcium available for the corals to use. You want a Mg level roughly 3x the Calcium level. Therefore, if you want 450ppm Ca, you want 1350ppm Mg.

It is needed for the corals to be able to grow, yes, also for Coraline algae.

cool, that is a big help! does anyone recommend a certain brand of magnesium......seachem, etc?

Bulk Reef Supply supplement is the best value, but a number of manufacturers make additives, Seachem, Kent, etc.

List what you are dosing. A lot of people dose useless stuff and don't dose the essentials.

currently im dosing calcium, and the carbonate alkalinaty, also an occasional buffer if needed. but thats about it. last time i checked levels were:

that was roughly 2 wks ago. i dose calcium about every other week or so. just to try to stay on top of it. i have two clams that i was told will use a lot of the calcium. the lowest ive seen it drop to is 320.

I have a 40B, so I don't have a large need for dosing, so I use the aquavitro line. I currnet;y dose the calcification, vibrance for iodide, ions for mag., and of course fuel. I don't have to add a lot, because I DO change water every so often....if you have a large tank, then the BRS stuff is definately the way to go, as the aquavitro line can get expensive....
