Algae Scrubber. Who's using them?

Do they effectively work in removing nuisance algae? How long does it take before you notice a change? Did you purchase or diy?

I set up a tank with an ATS as the only filtration as an experiment.
It took a few months for the screen to get seasoned but now 10 months in its running like a champ.
