May Meeting with Tal Sweet- Making Captive Breeding Easier
![]() ARC welcomes Tal Sweet as our speaker for the May meeting. The topic will be "Making Captive Breeding Easier".My first exposure to the Marine Aquarium hobby was in the mid- 1980's. Back then, undergravel filters and incandescent lights were the norm. Protein skimmers and "Live" rock were all the rage. At that time the only information available was found in a few books at the local library and, if you were lucky, a knowledgleable employee at a local fish store. Anyone that could keep a coral alive for more than a week or two was considered an expert! Little did I know that others were already hard at work on figuring out the protocols for captive breeding of marine fishes. I was also fortunate enough to visit Hawaii several times during the late 80's and early 90's. That gave me a unique appreciation of coral reefs and their inhabitants. Fast forward to 2006, I was drawn back into the hobby and was overwhelmed by the amount of information that was available due to the internet. The advancements that had been made over the years were astounding! Not only were we able to keep Corals alive indefinately, we had learned how to propagate them. I found that we had also learned how to do the same with Fish! Unfortunately, while finding all of this new information, I also found out about many negative things that are impacting not only the hobby, but the oceans at large. Environmental changes and unsustainable collection practices are having a Huge impact on reefs worldwide. It was after hearing Frank Marini speak at the Midwest Marine Conference in early 2008 about the concept of captive breeding that I realized that something needed to be done and that it was possible for the average person to do. When I got home from the Conference I immediately began my research. Later that year I attended MACNA in Atlanta and was able to hear, and speak with, Matt Wittenrich and Eric Borneman about the plight of the Banggai Cardinalfish. It was at that moment that I realized I was on the right track. This will possibly be the last speaker meeting for the entire year! Date: Tuesday, May, 8 Time: 7:30pm Location: Steve Shindell's office complex 3200 Downwood Cir Nw Atlanta, GA 30327 Directions to Steve Shindell's office building - From I-75 South-bound: Take Exit #255, West Paces Ferry and Northside Parkway. Turn left off the exit ramp. You will pass under I-75. Turn right at the first light onto Northside Parkway. Go to the second light, and turn right on Howell Mill Road. Go up the hill, and turn left on the first street, Downwood Circle. Go straight on Downwood Circle into the parking deck (all the way down the road). The building will be on your left. From I-75 North-bound: Take Exit #255, West Paces Ferry and Northside Parkway. Turn right off the exit onto Northside Parkway. Take an immediate right onto Howell Mill Road. Go up the hill, and turn left on the first street, Downwood Circle. Go straight on Downwood Circle into the parking deck (all the way down the road). The building will be on your left. And just the usual reminder - we are guests at this medical office complex, please absolutely NO SMOKING in or around the building! |

I may visit Tuesday Meeting. This would be my first meeting. My concern is traffic.
I will be traveling from I-75N [Macon area]. I will be leaving between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM from middle Georgia [Macon]. How is traffic on I-75N around 5:30 PM? Should I get off at I-675 and go around downtown Atlanta and get unto I-275 eastbound away from the airport? Any help would be appreciated. |

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. I'll be answering some of the most frequently asked questions people have when they're considering captive breeding.

Had at great time at last nights meeting. The presentation was great and extremely informative. The only disappointment was the turn out. I sure wish more people had made it. It is nice to get to know people on this forum but I much prefer getting to meet them face to face and have some time to just chat.

I second that, wish we could have had more turnout to give Tal a little better welcome to Atlanta.
That said...I'm glad many of you didn't come because I won that RODI! ![]() |

I wouldn't say you "won" it!
Unless you feel good about yourself being first in a one man race! I was a little jealous though, I just really don't need another 120 in my apartment. That being said, the speaker was really interesting last night. He seems like a passionate guy. |
