Probably doesn't matter, but that *brittle star* looks exactly like my serpent star

I googled it and yes the brittle star and serpent star look almost identical. In fact can be confused with one or the other. I do remember when we bought this from the pet place they called it a brittle star. Though they could have been wrong...that is what I was told it was.. Thanks!

Here is a link below, they are similar because they are in the same class of star fish..

Monday I am going to try and get better pics of each rock so that I can identify the coral further. So far this is what I have identified

The polyps that cover most of the rocks I have identified as Zoanthid colony polyps and button polyps.
Also red and black mushroom coral.
Stick tree polyps
A 2 inch rock encrusted with red coral, I have not yet I identified.

The yellow polyps that I thought were people eaters, I believe it is Colony Polyp, Super Colored.
My husband kept them under a black light and were very colorful.
Live rock (not sure about these but pretty sure going by pics I found on foster & smith web site)
Red covered rocks- Fiji Premium Live Rock and carribean rocks, both similar in color think there is a mix.
Purple covered rocks- Tonga Deepwater Live Rock
Pink covered rocks-Tonga Ridge/Shelf Live Rock
I had a Green Ricordea Florida Mushroom and other unusual things, which I can not seem to locate but perhaps Monday I will.

I got a question, does water become merky by too much salt? A family member came over while I was not home to take out my broken tank and added more salt to the water. Everything was doing so great, now the water is merky...I have taken out every rock and can't find any of my polyps or anything....I am clueless..

blind1993

i dont think it will i think that u had a fish die and that made the water merky also did u have an alage out breack.

Actually I had sold the fish and starfish already. So it was not dead..there is no algae growth..but yesterday there was good growth..polyps everywhere and mushroom coral, etc. and I don't see any of it. Almost looks as if someone has just taken it all out! The water is not clear either. I am putting the light on it and seeing if maybe they moved into the rocks..some of my rocks are very pourous and have holes for things to hide.

Yes, to answer your question, adding unmixed salt to saltwater could cause the water to look cloudy... How much salt was added?!? You might get a reef club member in Macon area to be able to test the salt level in your holding buckets. If it was alot of salt, this could kill your corals you are looking for. (Or make them close up and be harder to see)

My God my husband asked me to check it with the hydrometer this morning and it was so far off..so I put in 3 buckets and it evened out. So he thinks it may have killed the stuff..but we will see I am giving it a few days to see. My husband is pretty upset, because we didn't want to be at a loss with all this stuff he spent so much money & time on. I will let y'all know how everything goes!

Well, when he gets back, we will make sure that he has everything he needs to set it back up! and like I said, if you want to save what you can, I am sure we can find you a spare tank!

What size was the original tank?

armynavywife
07-25-2007, 12:53 PM
The original tank was a 40 gallon tank, I have the measurements at the house. It was tall and long tank. My husband loved his tank so much, bought it when in the Navy. Now deployed in the army he asked me almost every week how it was doing! After it had broke I sent him a pic and he felt his heart drop! The base was ruined due to all the water leakage, so I could not sell that and my family member who had came over stuck my eclispe light/filtrations systems to throw away. Which I am glad I caught them before that were gone! I He only has 18 days till he is coming home!! So as much as we needed the money from all this I am thinking about keeping everything "if" it will last that long. Besides I think all the coral may have died of all the chemicals and salt he put in there! Before the salt thing happened everything looked soo good! I can't thank you all for offereing to help out so much! You all are a great group of people and this web site is awesome! My husband definately wants to get a tank when he gets home, so if anyone wants to trade some of my rock for one I would very happy! =) Thanks again!

Like I said, I will make sure you guys are stocked back up on any coral that I can spare a frag of and I am sure others will do the same. As for a tank, check around here or look on craigslist.com for one.

Well, good news the water has cleared up and I saw the mushroom coral come back, the yellow super color polyps are very small and shrivled up, but atleast they are there. So far I haven't seen any of the other colony polyps. I think it's a good thing I added the fresh water so soon. I decided to keep everything, my husband finally admitted he could not bear to part with it all. Thanks everyone!!

Hey....this is Pat from Haynes again. If you decide to setup again for your husband....have him come by the store and I will give him the Instant Ocean and 8.2 if he needs it at no cost. Also, I will let him purchase anything else he needs to get it set back up at cost including the livestock.
