Pit bull terriers get such a bad rap because of all the media hype. They're actually terrific dogs and used to be known as *America's Dog*, now they're shunned. Some states and municipalities are actually banning this wonderful breed and forcably removing the dogs from their owners to euthanize them, yet pitties test higher on the temperament chart than labs, poodles, doxies and even beagles.

So sorry for your loss.

http://pbrc.net/ --- pass this link to people you know who think the bully breeds are the bad guys. Restoring the reputation of pits starts with education.

Pits are not bad; it's the irresponsible jerks who raise them to be fighters who should (IMHO) be euthanized.

A lab might bite someone, but the pit breed is often raised to fight and kill. Taking the fight out of a dog isn't always easy. Their breed is built for protection and battle. I like pits and even owned one for a few years and he was a big goof, but I know my rotties were far better mannered as a whole than pits owned by friends. Course I don't trust a dobberman at all and feel far more comfortable around pits myself.

the breeds are not the ones with the fault it is thier owners that a) do not know how to train them proplerly b) want them to fight C) try to train them but in the wrong way. most pits are calm and gental but they are givin a bad rep by the ones who have gotten mistreated and have lashed back.

OK.. My turn!
First...I'm so excited.. We adopted Sadie from Petsmart a year ago TODAY.. This morning, I went up to Petsmart with my boys and my dogs. A lady approached me and asked where I got Sadie from. I said "here". She said I thought so, do you know we have her sister in the back? (When we adopted Sadie, there were two pups but we only got the one). I had just been asking my hubby what he thought became of Sadie's sis! We turned the corner to see her and they look identical!! The lady told me that someone had adopted her and decided they didn't want her, so they brought her back. You can tell she wasn't fed right, but other than that they didn't beat her or anything. So, she asked if I wanted her, I said yes, but we really couldn't afford 95 dollars to adopt her. She said that since we already had the one, she would let me have the sister for free!! And it was so funny, they were wearing the exact same collar- brown with pink hearts :) I called Dennis to see if it was ok (he was at work) and he told me to do what I thought was 'right'...haha..big mistake..now we have three dogs!! Anyway, sorry..just was so excited, I wanted to share!!

Here's my pics- Sadie and Chloe, Misty, Kat (white), Gabby (grey), and Mookie (orange)

What is sad is when I go to the park with my pitbull and you see people leave the park. Nevermind the fact that my 6 year old daughter is running around with the dog and has taught him to go up and down the slide with her. Also last time I brought my dog to the Petco on the corner from us I was walking around and we picked out a toy (he brings them to the register) a little dog (cocker or something like that)came around the corner. They sniffed and then the little dog went crazy trying to attack mt dog 3 times larger. He just ran up behind me and the lady had to drag her dog away barking like mad....everyone saw it and then people started dragging thier kids from my dog?!? Did they think that the quiet dog who ran behind me was about to eat thier children after running away from a dog that could have been lunch for my dog? Most bully breeds have a bad rep....the one ruins it for the all.

Dalmations were bred to run with fire wagons, shepards want to herd, gray hounds want to run and the fact is the pit bull was bred to fight. The second part of that sentence was that they were also breed to be intelligent, have a tempered personality and to follow training. Genetically speaking they make great pets. However, one cannot ignore the fact the dog was bred to fight and ANY dog that is unbalanced from lack of solization or any other number of reasons often become aggressive. When a beagle gets this way, it is bad but not lethal. When a pit gets this way, it is just plain dangerous. Also, the breed tends to attract people who look at the dog as a status symbol and less of a pet furthering the problem. I am not arguing owner versus genetics here I am just stating that a pit can be a very dangerous animal much more so than many other breeds.

IMO, I find that cocker spaniels as Stevhan mentioned are more troublesome with aggression... dalmations are more aggessive as well.

I have heard that the number one dog for bites is the black lab.

Also one of the most popular and common dog out there. If someone actually did a scientific study, weighting the results against the actual population of each dog breed, then I think either the Shar pei or the Chow or Chiwawa would top the list.

At $22,000 it better clean my bathroom, too. Since everyone else has mentioned pit bulls - Yes, proper training is important, but it doesn't change the potential of the animal. If you don't train a lab correctly, he won't eat a baby because a car honks a horn 1/2 mile away. It's the same with a Ragdoll cat. Because of the breeding, it is impossible to make that car aggressive. There are reasons we have laws restricting fully automatic weapons; they don't shoot people just sitting there, but they'll do a lot more damage than a .22 pistol in the wrong hands.

Anyway, here's my Neopolitan Mastiff, Alexander.

Gorgeous pets everyone!

And after all my years in Bengals, I have yet to hear anyone stupid enough to spend $22,000 on an "Ashera" which is merely a mixture of a bengal and savannah. For that much money, the cat better live as long as I do. :-)

Sussed.

American Temperament Test Society Inc. (http://www.atts.org/temperament.html) is a good source for canine temperament statistics and one that many rescue groups refer to.

Here are some stats (the percentage is the passing score for the number tested). The only dog on this list (and there are many more on the ATTS website) that tested higher than the Pit Bull is the Labrador Retriever.

84.1% of 542
American Pit Bull Terrier

69.7% of 89
Chow Chow

81.7% of 219
Cocker Spaniel

79.2% of 811
Collie

81.9% of 315
Dalmation

76.8% of 1,452
Doberman Pinscher

83.3% of 2,833
German Shepherd

83.8% of 687
Golden Retriever

91.5% of 686

Miniature Schnauzer

82.7% of 4,744
Rottweiler

More people get stung by bees than lionfish, but I'll take a yellow jacket over a volitan any day of the week. I'm not arguing occurrence rate, I'm arguing damage potential.

I googled this for you.
"Labrador Retriever kills" - 0 hits.
"Labrador Kills" 16 hits.
"Mastiff Kills" 40 hits.
"Retriever Kills" 54 hits.
"Rottweiler Kills" 674 hits.
"Pit Bull Kills - 16,000 hits.

Just because you've had a good experience with the animal, does not make it the rule. Even if you want to argue pit bulls receive more publicity, at best, it's one retriever hit for every 296.29 pit bull hits.

Xyz...... I flew out our Bengal up to NJ just before Xmas to be bred. It was an arrangement we had with our breeder that she gets all kittens except for the pick (which we get) and we recieve bredding rights for future litters.

Needless to say we just got her back along with a Silver male from another litter to breed with her in the future.

When she comes in heat we will find a stud and breed her once again...Ill let you know what happens if you like...

Just as an FYI, when we breed her it will not be with the kitten we just got, he will be fixed soon...but when we find a stud for ours and breed Ill let you know..

Here is Pete. We brought him home form a camping trip. He was a stray puppy living off worms and bugs. That was almost 3 years ago.

One of the best dogs I have every had.

Heres mine. He's a 12 year old golden retreiver rescue dog that was probably abused. It has taken him almost a year to trust me. He is also camera shy as you can see.
