Tank of the Month April 2011

My name is Shannon, I work for T-Mobile as a Sales Lead. I have been married for 8 years to my husband Mike. We have 2 great children, Haley (7) and Robert aka Bubba (17 months). We have been reefing for almost 3 years now. We are very addicted to our tank and it's like another family member to us.

How did you get started?
My manager at T-Mobile said he had a saltwater tank. My family went over to see it one day, and well the next 3 days we spent setting one up.

What or who were/are your influences and inspirations?
We have had a few influences with this hobby. The guy who got us started was a big one, Jerrit03. We have always loved fish tanks, but we always dealt with freshwater. Saltwater opened up a whole new world for us.

What are your thoughts/feelings about your tank being picked for ToTM?
I feel very grateful for the chance to share what we have worked so hard for. It means more than you can imagine for those who nominated us.

Tank Overview
Our tank was was originally JessPetes tank. She sold it to Superclown when she upgraded. We bought it from Superclown a few months after he had it.

System Profile
System water volume 110 gallons
Display tank volume 90 gallons
Tank dimensions 48x18x25
Sump volume 40 gallon sump

Our lighting is 2 400 watt coralvue ballast, 2 400 watt radium bulbs, 2 blue Ecoxotic Panorama strips. All retro fitted into our hanging canopy.
Our return pump is a Mag 9. We have 3 Korlina 3's and one 4 as flow. We decided to use a ASM G2 as or skimmer and we have a DYI phosban reactor. We use a JBJ ATO, along with our Apex controller.

Our lighting is set where the left bulb comes on at 10:30am, the right bulb comes on at 11:30am. We have our led come on at 5:00pm. The left MH light turns off at 5:30pm and the right one turns off at 6:30pm. We did this to make the sun up and sun down effect in the tank.

Filtration is an ASM G2 skimmer.

We only have a 75 watt stealth heater with no chiller. We have 2 4 inch fans that we use in our stand for cooling. With this set up we see a degree and a half with in a day. We are very happy with the way we decided to put this together. We do not have the room for a chiller so we are glad that this worked out.

Final Thoughts
The biggest key is NOT TO RUSH THINGS. We have had 2 tank crashes in the past due to rushing. Second thing is don't be afraid to ask someone for advice.

What are your future plans for the tank?
Only plans we have right now is to upgrade to a 240 gallon. Not sure when but that is our goal.

What is the worst and best thing you have ever bought/added/done to your tank?
Worst 2 things I have ever done are 1. not dipping something before it went in, got zoa eating nudis 2 years ago.... 2.Ebay bulbs. The best thing we have ever bought is Radium bulbs!

Describe any disasters you have had
We had a tank crash due to a malfunction in a heater, also had a tank crash due to not knowing a lot and rushing things.

What would you have done differently?
Took our time and did research.

Thoughts on coral fads
We are suckers for coral fad. We buy them when we can.

Advice for beginniners/Words of wisdom
Listen when someone that has the experience says something. Take your time and do not rush. A saltwater tank will not happen overnight, nor will it happen in 6 months. It takes time, LOTS OF TIME.

Things you couldn't live without
Friends when you need them, and our Garf Bonsai.

There are quite a few people that we would like to thank. First we would like to give a big thank you to Chris and Mary Jane at Einsteins. We would like to thank you guys first for almost being the witness to our son's birth in your store. Not to many people will drop whatever they are doing to answer a phone or make a 45 min drive any time needed. Chris has guided us in great direction from nothing at all. Also Mary Jane WE LOVE YOU MOM!

Rit for helping us restock after our tank crash.

Tiffany at Blue Planet has been a HUGE help also. Someone that will call you back at 1 am if you ever need anything. You guys are great Tiff thanks for your help.

Tim at Keen Reef is another one that will drop what he is doing to help you.

Few others: Stoney, SuperClown, Landon, Barry, Rob, Dave, Chris, Jerrit, and lastly we would like to give a big thanks to our brother Ansley for always being there when we need something.

You guys are all great and thanks for all you have shown us!

Note: Some of the pictures are showing up kinda dark... i don't know what's up with that, but I'll try to get it straightened out. WSD

Beautiful tank Shannon and Mike, I also have had the pleasure to see in person. Just too much in their tank to take in. I would be looking at one particular coral, then another would catch my eye.
