View Full Version : Large in-wall tanks
TChristman 01-15-2011, 10:08 PM Would be great to see some pictures of the various in-wall tanks that have access from the front side. I have to figure out a way to access the tank from both sides without taking away from the room. Construction begins on Monday.
I originally was not going to access the tank from the front but being 36" wide it will be hard to get to things without being able to see on the front side if I have to attempt it from the back side.
Great ideas are appreciated.
carpenter981 01-15-2011, 10:29 PM what about recessing a stand/canopy in the wall...

slayer 01-16-2011, 12:16 AM if i had to do it over, i would also have access to both sides. A huge pita not be be able to get to the other side. Jon (swaggs) has an awesome in wall with access to the front, he had a tank of the month also, i'll try and find his post..
Mockery 01-16-2011, 2:10 AM The easiest way I've seen it done to take a piece of wood 1x4 or what ever spanning across the tank opening. Them make some raised panel/panels that are the doors. I'd make them open upwards and have either locking hinges or screen door type openers.
I'll fined pick tomorrow.
Fish Scales2 01-16-2011, 5:45 AM I was thinking of creating a removable judges panel above.
rjrgroup 01-16-2011, 9:28 AM Mimicking the panels in you foyer. With all that beautiful trim through-out your house, it would be a shame not to incorporate the same look into your tank.
TChristman 01-16-2011, 10:29 AM Good idea there. It has to look asthetically pleasing as possbile. I like the idea of incorporating something similar to the panels. The access would only be from above the tank. I will have full access to everything else from behind the tank. Any suggestions or thoughts if that would look well?
MarkO22 01-16-2011, 11:04 AM This is a hinged design like mockery mentioned above that Chris built for me. When down it mimics the trim work in the house and when opened, the door hinges raise past 90 degrees to hold the facia in place above the tank opening. Just lift up to feed or gain entry to tank via the hinge.

this is OZ's build.
rjrgroup 01-16-2011, 11:22 AM How about bean bag chairs and that mini-bar that she wants? J/K, I think Chris was wanting to trim the back of the front panels but the rest of the set-up should be all about ease of use. He was talking about a sort-of wrap around porch platform and rolling tracks to move the lights out of the way. The walls will be green board sheetrock made for wet applications. This is going to be one EPIC build!:thewave:

Dave did a fantastic job on mine. He could incorporate your house trim design in a top access panel with multiple doors. Use removable vertical braces for even better tank access.

Also think about a space or set of shelves accessible from the front to house food, mount pump controllers, cleaner magnets, etc. Much easier to hide all that stuff but still have it right by the tank.
Some type of spring loaded push panel would be ideal but after a while, the rust would cause problems.
Here's what I did. The doors (top and bottom) open from the front. The bookcase to the right of the tank is also a door to a 2ft deep space behind the tank so I can service it from the back. It's not really a fish room, more of a fish closet!
Amberjack 01-16-2011, 2:25 PM Nice George, good to hear from you
TChristman 01-16-2011, 5:54 PM Keep em coming. Getting closer. I appreciate the input.
Schwaggs 01-16-2011, 6:39 PM I still have the same setup you saw when you were her years ago Jaime :( When I finish it, I plan on copying this design from a guy on RC.
Schwaggs 01-16-2011, 6:49 PM This is how I framed the opening for my in-wall. Then I built a frame for the tank to sit on out of 14" LVLs ripped in half, set one edge of the frame on the knee wall and built legs on the other side out of cedar 4X4s.
TChristman 01-16-2011, 7:57 PM And the winner is....Schwaggs. That is perfect. Exactly what I am looking for. Now jut have to figure out how to do it.
Fish Scales2 01-17-2011, 12:17 AM That is a very simple door and trim. The fun part will be convincing you to install an actuator to it.:D

Slo-STI 04-18-2011, 12:53 PM Keep the pics coming I am trying to get some ideas for my 500 gallon in wall I have in the works. Original I was only gonna access from the rear but I guess I need to rethink that since you guys say it was a pita! My tank will be 36 inches from front to back
