I have a spawn of about 500 A. ocellaris eggs due to hatch the overnight of 8/10.

If you'd like to give them a try, and you're available to pick them up between 4 and 8 PM that day, let me know :)

I'll supply the crackers too if YOU eat them - WITH the 'caviar'. I have a cat you might be interested also.

Sheesh.....

Still no takers. It's the biggest bunch yet.

If nobody wants them I'm tempted (GAWD HELP ME!) to try them myself... but I have no greenwater or rotifers...

I don't mind staying late to try to collect the fry, but I'd need some serious support/advice/starter culture of rotifers/phyto.

I've had this pair for so long, it would be really nice to see some of their offspring finally survive.

Anyone want to pitch in to help me? :)

Not me but if anyone can help out (has rotifers/agreenwater) and wants to meet me around kennesaw I can bring it to you - Im headed your way around 2 to pick up that sand.

Biggest obstacle might be collecting the fry if I wait for them to hatch in the tank they are in... OR I can wait a while after lights out and move the PVC into another vessel with my tank water.

I have an old 1g fish bowl that I used to use as a Kriesel from my seahorse days, I can rig that up again... those worked well for me.

We have a 20L at the house that Brian just retired (to move up to a 40 breeder)... I could set that inside the 20 to maintain temperature as I've seen some do...

What am I thinking? :) Like I have "spare time"... I just hate to see the little gits go to waste.

Food is the big obstacle right now I'm sure I could scare up enough equipment for them.

I was actually thinking of getting them. that should show how nutz i am. of course those thoughts caused another spawning here. I can give you cultures, but I'm in athens. I know how hard it is to let them pass. If no locals want to try, I might be able to come up Tues and get the eggs and bring you cultures to start for next batch. It will take a while to get the cultures large enough to feed a large batch.

You're welcome to them if you want them. I've been perusing Bud's thread on his B&Ws and I just don't think I'm up to the challenge with all the other stuff I have to do around here.

If you can't come Tuesday I can try to collect the larvae (although I'm not sure if I'm better off leaving them where they are til they hatch, or collect the PVC at lights out...) if they can live off yolk sacks for 72 hours...maybe that's an option too because I don't have anything to feed them (I'm sure frozen rotifers won't do - I have those but that's it).

I had someone else interested but he's a distance away and not available on Tuesday night either. If you or someone is going to the meeting and wants to come get eggs and/or fry afterwards, I could co-ordinate with them on that.

I should be able to co-culture them with the percs, so it is a possibility. And my Os were eating their eggs in the DT when you first posted! If i get these eggs maybe my other Os will feel pressured to join the bunch. so if nobody else wants to, i'll come up Tues before you close.

I'm working all of my rotifer cultures, but still feel like they need more, so i added a touch of frozen rotis too.

Oh yeah definitely. A large percentage hatch and die the first night. When i syphon off the bottom the first time there are always some dead. MAybe 20 or so from this batch. A few more will drop off this week and at meta I would expect to loose a dozen more. At least that is roughly what has happened with the other types of clowns. I'm really trying to keep them well-fed, so hopefully this batch will be better.

JennM

Relative to the size of the batch, that's not many. That's good. Yes, Mother Nature tends to cull just about everything, I guess that's why the batches are so large in the first place, because especially in the wild, there are long odds for them making it to breeding age.

We're loving the photos :)

true. They did ALL hatch on the way home. Normally i'll pull the tile and place it in the bowl and just rear the ones that hatch. they don't all hatch. Most of my batches have been less than 50. it takes a lot of algae to feed a ton of rotifers to feed hundreds of larvae and i just can't get the algae up because i'm constantly using it.

If you want to see some amazing photos check out this thread on MOFIB. Andy is raising percs and taking awesome pics. i have the same larvae at arms length and have never seen them like this.

So cute :) How are they doing, survival wise? Any idea how many you had to begin with?

I estimated about 500 eggs based on the size of the patch, and based on Bobby's actual count of the first batch he'd collected.

The current batch that the parents are tending now are at least that numerous, maybe even more.

Those are due to hatch next Saturday night... I suppose I should post a new thread to see who would like them (unless you do, James - but I figured you might have your hands full with that batch).

Doing good. Just lost 2 or 3 a day. i would have estimated maybe 200 eggs, but I've never actually counted. It is the largest batch i've ever done. I don't even attempt to count til i move them to the grow-out system at 5 weeks.
I'll have to pass on the eggs, I have a double hatching tonight! and more bangs are due weds. I'm even passing on my GSMs due tomorrow if anyone wants a go

jamescook
08-17-2010, 9:54 AM
not many. The dominants might start tomorrow. Clownfish development is staggered and the aggressive eaters grow so much faster than the stragglers.
