View Full Version : Water Storage Tanks
rnmahler 03-28-2007, 9:35 AM Hello,
I have just put in an RO system on my kitchen sink and have a t-splitter running to my basement. next step is to put a 60 gallon or so water tank in the basement.
Does anyone know where to get a ~60 gallon plastic water storage tank, i had thought of using a Rubbermaid Brute trash can but would sooner go with something (all right, more extecially pleasing) more desinged for storing drinking water.
I am also working on a shutoff value and timer to manage water flow from the 3 gallon storage.

James S. 03-28-2007, 10:01 AM You can go to usplastics.com or just google water storage tanks

I have 2 of their 40 gallon tanks and they're great.

boydx6 04-05-2007, 12:39 AM Look around where you live for some food manufacturing plants. Most have food grade plastic barrels that they will sell REALLY CHEAP. Depending on what food was stored in them, all you will have to do is clean them up good and add water. I just got 2 60 gallon drums and have them soaking in a pool for a couple weeks. I picked them up in Tampa or I would tell you where to get them.
USPlastics - I also have two.
mattrg_2000 04-08-2007, 9:05 PM I just ordered one. (Mojo recommended these at one point.) Here's the scoop on cost w/ shipping. UPS ("Brown") raised their shipping costs, so a 55 gal is the largest you can order without freight.
55 Gallon Black Polyethylene Tank 20" x 47" $97.69 + $40 +/- shipping. (1" Bulkhead)
40 Gallon Black Polyethylene Tank 18" x 43" $78.01 + $30 +/- shipping. (3/4" Bulkhead)
65 Gallon Black Polyethylene Tank 23" x 42" $114.07 + $75 freight cost (not UPS). (1" Bulk)They come in white or black. Here's the link for the black...

There are definitely cheaper options, but I liked the idea of a small footprint, sealed (vent in lid), and bottom bulkhead.

George 04-09-2007, 11:41 AM Ouch. Looks like we ordered just in time to miss a 2x price hike on shipping. I really like mine. 40g makes for perfect availability of emergency water changes. Lugging water between them is a bit rough. I may have to re-think the plumbing.
Also, the bulkheads are their default bulkheads. You can get them to put larger ones, if desired.
Kevin 04-09-2007, 10:28 PM I love mine... thanks george for coordinating that group buy
George 04-10-2007, 12:03 PM Glad to do it Kevin. Did you get any weird looks with a tank in the roadster?
If anyone else is buying these, I'd definitely get the white ones. You can see the water level through them.
flyingarmy 04-10-2007, 12:11 PM This 250 works great for me.

where did you get that from?
flyingarmy 04-10-2007, 12:40 PM On Craigslist....it was a garden water storage tank. You can find them on there every so often, just make sure you test the tank and find out what was in it beforehand. Picked it up for $100!
George 04-10-2007, 5:34 PM You can order those from US Plastic as well.
Speaking of these tanks, I saw an 18-wheeler on 75 last evening that was loaded down over every square inch of a wide-load flatbed with every size white poly tank you could imagine from what looked to be about 100 gallons or so up to what had to be 500 or even 1000. All strapped together. No more than 2 alike.
LorenK 04-13-2007, 6:08 PM One of my past obsessive hobbies was wine making (when I lived in California). My partners were UC Berkeley professors science. We used brute cans for fermenting smaller batches. So when they said the Brute cans are safe, I took them at their word. I personally wouldn't worry about using them. They are not rated food safe, but it's more because of the costs for certification and manufacturing controls.
IIRC, the white ones are NSF approved. Home winemakers use the gray ones as well. Blue ones are taboo.
Yeah, it's wine not water.
Restaurant's sometimes have huge containers that are used for shipping things like pickles, olives and various liquids. You might be able to find one from your local haunt. The same sort you can get from US Plastics.
