View Full Version : Test ran my MR4R and have a question.
cr500_af 12-30-2009, 3:42 AM This actually an MR4 that I converted to an "R", using a Mag 9.5 to feed and the Iwaki pump as the recirc. On test-running it (on a 29g full of old water from water changes) I noticed that, while it seemed to do what it was supposed to do, one of the injectors got water in the bottom at a faster rate than the other one did, and the one that filled faster also had a substantial amount of bubbles coming from where the Beckett meets the fitting it mates with on the lower end.
I ran it according to the setup instructions on the website, i.e. needle valves all the way open and water level 2" above the box.
Is this anything that needs attention, and if so what should I check?
Thanks in advance.
If you are talking about actual water in the clear beckett chamber then that can happen in my experience. I took a few hours to take them apart fully, cleaned them, put a bit of pipe wrap around the top and bottom to make sure it was a tight seal and it really help with the turbulence inside the injector. My MR-2R didnt have any of those problems really but others I worked with at a store did. IME it didnt really impact the performance of the skimmer.
cr500_af 12-30-2009, 4:05 AM Thanks Charlie... it didn't seem to impact it at all, but do I understand right that the clear outer chamber of the injector assembly should remain dry ideally? That is the place where I'm getting water (but, at least set up the way it is for break in period, the water isn't reaching the needle valves so no leakage fron the silencers).
I'd really rather have an MR-2R, but I couldn't pass up the steal on this one. Hopefully it won't skim the rock out of the tank, LOL.

I have never seen one where the beckett was dry. In all of them it kept the turbulence down inside the beckett itself when it was properly seated but there was always a bit of water "standing" in the beckett chamber itself.
cr500_af 12-30-2009, 4:14 AM Great. I'll take the left one apart and make sure it is sealed well and hopefully get rid of the bubbles. I guess for $175 I did OK, you think? :D

Is it still a skimmer/fountain or did you get the squirt gun leak feature repaired?

cr500_af 12-30-2009, 5:03 AM You don't want this ratty old thing anyway.

As a side not, oh my God, that Iwaki is LOUD. This thing is as loud as a vaccum cleaner! I hope it's just because it is temporarily on top of an inverted 5g bucket...
weaglereefer 12-30-2009, 9:30 PM It's cheating to add bubble bath!
Seriously, there's water in there somewhere? All I see is foam.
LilRobb 12-30-2009, 11:43 PM Barry,
Are you officially infected with the MRC virus now?
Welcome to the club...
cr500_af 12-31-2009, 12:45 AM Yes, there is water in there... but from the base box up all you see is foam. Looks like it is full of styrofoam beads.
I've got to figure out a way to delay the recirc pump coming on when power is applied, so that (in the case of a power outage, for example) the feed has a chance to fill the box before the Iwaki comes on so it won't run dry. I think my brother has an item to do just that.
All is well except there is no way that skimmer is going upstairs... can't hear the TV over it. It sounds like Keen Reef back by the bathroom door!!!
