http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1907&d=1174975558I've finally add something to our site that I've been working on for a while. It's a Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org)-style system known in general as a "Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki)". Wiki's are becoming more common nowadays, and I'm happy to see that I was able to integrate it well into our existing site.

The Wiki has been created to enhance, not replace, the forums. The forums should operate as normal. However, I'm hoping that the wiki will become a source of information for beginners and a repository of facts, links, and references for veterans. There's a lot of information in the posts in the forum, but the good stuff is pretty spread out. The articles can be discussed easily by clicking on the "Talk" button at the top of the article; it'll automatically start a new thread in the forums.

One person can't stay on top of something like this, and the wiki allows anyone to edit the articles. Well - almost anyone. To edit an article, someone needs to be an ARC Member. Your username and password is all integrated - login to the forums, and you're in the wiki. The forum rules still apply- if you can't play nice, your access to edit can and will be removed.

You can access the articles using the "Articles" (http://www.atlantareefclub.org/wiki) link in the top navigation, or by going to http://www.atlantareefclub.org/wiki

The editing takes a little getting used to, but not it's not hard once you figure out the small stuff. Feel free to add/edit/modify any page on the system - that's the only way it'll grow! Please remember to keep things professional, try not to include opinions, and be courteous.

A big thanks goes to MattTVI, who has put a lot of effort in getting the fish and inverts ID and Care forum going, and to Schwaggs for minor additions. Let's keep them up! Don't be scared to try it out - most anything can be cleaned up.

:w00t:

As always, please let me know if you run into any problems and I'll try to address them.

This is a really cool idea, Chris. I look forward to myself and others adding content to it.

hey brad, if you are on the fish id/care section, just click on the category of fish you want to add... if you want to add a tang, click on edit and then copy an existing fish (like the yellow tang) and paste it in alphabetical (sp?) order in the list of tangs named as whatever tang you want to add. once you do that, wiki automatically creates a link to a new page, so save your edits then click the new link you just created and edit that. I like to copy and paste other profiles and then change the info. that keeps everything orderly, just remember to change the picture and link, i have a picture needed link in some of the profiles if you don't have a picture, you can copy and paste that.

hth,

Matt :)

Yup- just what Matt said. Just add the link to the parent page. So... on the main fish identification page, you'd edit it and add (for example):

[[Blue Spotted Stingray]]

And then when you saved, the wiki saves the link. Click on that new link, and start editing the new page.

To keep things consistent, you'll probably want to copy and paste the format from another page that Matt has done.

Am I missing the search function?

No... I meant to integrate it with the normal site search, but since no one really added any content to the wiki, I never bothered. This project didn't go anywhere- it takes a community effort, which didn't happen.

Maybe an interface to wikipedia would be good...although I really like the wiki concept. We use it at work for tons of things.
