Is the female carrying fertilized eggs, or are they fertilized while the female is already carrying them?

Thanks

I'm not an expert but I think they would be fertilized. Don't they just release them into the water column when ready?

Correct,
My question was - at what time during the female carrying them are they fertilized?!

I think if she's carrying them (visibly) then that are infact fertile...

Here, I just found this article that has some info on it. Seems it probably happens in the first 12 hrs?

There is a good book out there too on this topic...

How to raise and train your peppermint shrimp by April kirkendoll

Lots of good info about breeding this species

Shrimp of the genus Lysmata are usually hermaphrodites, that is each individual carries both sexes. Two shrimp will generally carry eggs and fertilize each others eggs. No they don't fertilize their own. They go through a female and male phase after a molt, developing the eggs they switching to "male" reproductive mode to fertilize each other. Yes, this usually all happens within the first 12 hours after a molt. The eggs then develop and will hatch shortly before the next molt, when the shrimp is starting to prepare for release of the old exoskeleton.

Yes, probably too much information! The breeders corner is sort of like a biology class.
If we start taking movies, we may have to rate the forum.
