View Full Version : Oh no, the one fo oh!
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:05 PM With sand!!! What have I done???? Ughhhh, I'm disgusted, relieved, bothered and yet strangely ok. Yes I am sure there will be a lot of people coming out of the wood works to flame me, and so be it. My tank has been heavily neglected over the past 6 months or so....I have had a lot of personal and family issues as well as a lot of work. I have recently grown my clam collection and realized they weren't too happy with the large amount of flow I had in the tank due to previously being BB. I lost two clams in this process so I decided to turn the flow down. Well, BB tank don't particularly care for lower flow so I had a lot of detritus build up and thus caused an outbreak of hair algae. Seeing how I don't see myself stopping anytime soon with clams, I figured I'd make them happy....unfortunately to do that, the BB husbandry had to go :( It's been awhile since I had a big tank with sand and I must say....I missed it a little, but I'd go back to BB in a second....so we'll see how long this lasts, lol. Finally some really crappy pics of the very dirty tank....with super white sand, lol. I totally have to use different settings now for the cam to adjust to all that whiteness....ughh.

Man that is an awesome looking tank.
sailfish 11-16-2009, 11:07 PM Wow what has the world come to.:)
Looks great as does your tank!
Joe
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:07 PM I wanted to get pics of the Large squammy and the gigas, but I had too much light reflection on the water surface....guess I need a top down box.
Amici 11-16-2009, 11:08 PM Lookin good. You have some nice clams man! Is that 4 different green monti caps or is it the same cap with frags? It looks like a candy apple and a leng sy but its hard to tell. Its some of the greenest ive seen!
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:10 PM The one that's far to the left on the FTS is a regular green..but grows a little different. The one closest to the clams is a candy apple and it's all 1 piece. Started from a frag the size of a quarter. And I have a leng si to the far right...though I dont think it's a true leng si.....I really regret selling the one I had :(
never looked better. :) nice.
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:12 PM never looked better. :) nice.
Thanks, but I really miss it when it was an acro garden :( As many others have said about their tanks in the past...it'll never be the same.
Sprayin70 11-16-2009, 11:17 PM Very nice bro. Those clams look happy.

Ill trade you a frag of real deal leng sy for a piece of candy apple. I got my Leng Sy from Jin.
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:19 PM Thanks brother...I'm tryin to make them happy, unlike the other two :( Alls I know is I'd vomit if the squammy died!
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:20 PM Ill trade you a frag of real deal leng sy for a piece of candy apple. I got my Leng Sy from Jin.
purple rim with white polyps...if so, sounds good to me :)
theplantman 11-16-2009, 11:24 PM Looking nice, the one good thing about the white sand is it sets off the colors of the coral well.
Amici 11-16-2009, 11:24 PM Yup. You going to be making any LFS runs around Thanksgiving? Ill be in Alpharetta and thats where the coral is anyway.
Thanks, but I really miss it when it was an acro garden :( As many others have said about their tanks in the past...it'll never be the same.
I still have several pieces from that tank. :) Let me know when you want a frag.
glxtrix 11-16-2009, 11:28 PM Charlie, that time is going to be rough for me, my wife is due on Thanksgiving....so we'll have to figure something out one of these days in the future. Oz, we'll see where this tank takes me...there may be some though...I can't remember what all you took? lol.

That cup is pretty large now even after I accidentally fragged it months back. it would hold a softball easy now. :)
Skriz 11-16-2009, 11:57 PM You may have your man card back now Lee! Your clams and I are happy to see that you have finally seen the light and have added sand. It looks glorious! :)

Heh, well thanks..good to know I have your approval.
christopherjay 11-17-2009, 4:38 AM wow..Looks great!!!!..
Heh, well thanks..good to know I have your approval.
Doesn't everyone strive for my approval? :)
molson 11-17-2009, 9:45 AM Nothing like changing it up a little....or alot. Looks great.
Budsreef 11-17-2009, 9:56 AM Woohoo, looks good! Of course now you're going to need a sand sifter and some nasarrius snails.
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 10:09 AM Yeah Bud for real....I need to keep this sand white! Nasarrius snails are awesome...I have them in Alysa's tank. How hardy are the sand sifting stars?? Oh and, here is the little 12g nano cube in the babies room :)

Budsreef 11-17-2009, 10:15 AM I was thinking sand sifting fish like a Diamond Goby. That is a sweet looking nano!
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 10:31 AM Thanks man :) It's doing it's own thing. I added the fish from Bob and your trumpet coral in there as well :) Diamond goby huh...would I need to let my sand age some more before I put one of those guys in? I do like them, but my sand is pretty fine, I wonder what kind of mess he would make.
Budsreef 11-17-2009, 11:24 AM Yeah, even though they eat just about anything you throw in the tank you might want to wait until there is some life in the sand. I have one due to come out of QT and into my display this weekend, I'll let you know how messy he is.
phoenix20 11-17-2009, 11:27 AM WOW. Those purple and green montipora are beautiful!
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 11:59 AM Thanks :) I really hope to get back to taking care of the tank...but with the baby on the way, that may be hard. The sides definitely need a good scrub down.
mysterybox 11-17-2009, 12:07 PM awesome tank!
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 12:22 PM Thanks Ralph....it's slowly doing it's thing.
DrNecropolis 11-17-2009, 12:58 PM Welcome back to the darkside Lee!!
Def. Let us know how messy the diamond goby is Bud.. I have been in need of a sand sifter myself and was wondering if they "crop dust" everything..
molson 11-17-2009, 1:04 PM I get a little blowing around with mine but that's generally caused more by the flow taking what he disturbs. I've yet to see my diamond dive bomb and spread any sand that way but I've read that they may do that.
As for needing the sand to age, not sure. Mine sifts all day but still is at the top of the tank competing with my triggers when I feed. All in all a great fish, generally sifting from lights on to off.
Smoothie 11-17-2009, 1:06 PM They only crop dust the first couple of days while first stirring things up. Good time to do a water change. After that just purdy white sand falls out of their gills.
Those snails are awesome too

Hmmm well thats completely understandable. Ill try to make the trip out to your place if you can throw a softie frag my way for my horse tank

What is that on top of the PH to the left? Is that a nem?
I was thinking sand sifting fish like a Diamond Goby. That is a sweet looking nano!
I would usually agree with this, but I will say I had an evil diamond that liked to cover up my clams.......I ended up moving them up to the rock work because he would literally dump it on them and they would close up.
I dont know what to suggest in all honesty but that just something to keep in mind because they are REALLY hard to catch.
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 3:28 PM yeah that's a nem on top of the K-nano. It was next to the other one a month or so ago, but decided it wanted to move. Weird spot, but it's happy.

Wow. Is the nano on? I suppose they dont move a whole lot of water. I figured it was a nem or some awesome nem looking corals. Very cool.
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 3:42 PM Yeah it's on. And they only move like 250 or 300gph, not too much. The intake slats are on the front part of the housing too...so it hasn't been sucked up into it quite yet. I can only assume it'll be a matter of time.
That sand will look sweet when all of the hair algae starts to grow over it.
Schwaggs 11-17-2009, 10:45 PM Wow, what is this world coming to? This is like Raj switching to Bubble King or Jeremy buying a Chrysiptera cyanea.
Your clams look happy as.... er.... a clam. :)
glxtrix 11-17-2009, 10:47 PM Lol, good analogy ;)
glxtrix 09-14-2010, 1:22 AM It's been a long while since I've posted. The tank has gone through a lot of ups and downs and has definitely seem better days. After a few possible tear downs and some neglect due to a new little person...it's finally on the road to better health. There is HA, but it's on the down fall I believe...once I replace my RO filter and membrane, I'm sure that will help rid the rest. Anywho, here are 2 cruddy videos. Enjoy.
