View Full Version : How long do I have.
johnr2604 11-12-2009, 8:36 PM As you can see I have a rather odd couple of clownfish in my avatar. One is a true percula and the other is a B/W ocellaris. I have been talking to John (baboonscience) about getting them to possibly breed. Low and behold I noticed them fanning under the anemone tonight and I have a clutch. John was going to collect them and try to raise the fry. How long do I have. should I siphon them now and do something with them?
jcusmarine 11-12-2009, 8:41 PM Congrats. I have no idea how long you have....but, congrats.

Atlanta Aquarium 11-12-2009, 8:43 PM congrats John.
Congrats. From my experience it can be from 7 to as long as 14 days depending on tank factors. You can begin to see the eyes and fish when they are about to hatch and look almost a shiny silver. Here are a couple links.

Thanks, I wasn't sure. That will give me time to get in touch with him.
Usually about a week. They turn from orange to brown within the first couple or few days, then right before they hatch they turn a sort of silver... translucent and you can see the silvery larvae inside. My ocellaris usually hatch in about 7 days (but I don't rear them - they end up as fish/coral food...)
Good luck :)

johnr2604 11-12-2009, 8:59 PM I'm hoping to get some cool offspring. This is just funny I started Talking to John at the fragswap about getting them to spawn. He told me to give them time and expressed and interest in getting the eggs to raise (I am not setup). I think they layed last night. I didn't see it but I did notice the female was aggressively defending there territory this morning. I didn't notice the clutch untill I was eating dinner tonight.
Lady Baboon 11-12-2009, 10:22 PM Congrats!!!
It proves the point: Be careful what you wish for lol
What is your water temperature? That is a main factor. Normal hatch-out time is 7-8 days. The warmer the water the earlier the hatch but hardly ever less than 7 days.
I'll tell John!

I'll tell John!79-80deg
BaboonScience 11-12-2009, 10:39 PM Great news John!
I am guessing about 7 days to hatch. With the Black Ocellaris as a parent, perhaps 8 days. This is because the Black O's like warmer water usually. As I have told you, this will be an interesting growout. There has been some speculation about the Perc - Black O parentage giving rise to a strain of what is called Onxy Percula. We shall see!
glxtrix 11-12-2009, 10:42 PM Should you or someone raise them, I'd buy a pair. They would definitely make for some cool looking clowns.
Mockery 11-12-2009, 10:42 PM Congrats John! Shotgun and off spring! These could be really cool!

Amici 11-12-2009, 10:47 PM John (Baboon) LMK how they turn out looking, I currently have a pair of clowns that are Black Oc and Ocellaris pair that I would be curious to see what the babies would look like.
MarkL 11-12-2009, 10:53 PM Thats so coooooool.Im coming to dallas tomorrow id love to check it out.

JDabs 11-12-2009, 11:01 PM Very cool!! Can't wait to see what they end up looking like!!
Very nice! Hopefully the pair will not consume the eggs... my pair of ocellaris took a few attempts before they cared for them long enough to hatch. Good luck!

Good luck!Yes , I heard this could be a problem. We will see were we are at in a couple of days. Now that they are spawning though they should continue to lay hopefully
salt reefer 11-13-2009, 4:02 AM gratz thats so cool.when i had my first reef tank i bought a new book it told at the time time very first succeesful clownfish breeding in a tank wow we have come so far.

Yep. So long as the tank is not disturbed I think they will keep cranking out the eggs. Great job!

johnr2604 11-16-2009, 6:17 PM OK guys, the eggs are developing nicely. Dark Brown with an Iris starting to develop. I've been in contact with John and it looks like tomorrow is gonna be the day he will collect them.
The male has done a great job tending to the eggs. He hasn't eaten them at least. John seems to think this may not be their first spawn.
Awesome. Great to hear that they are doing well. I cant wait to see what the babies look like.
johnr2604 11-18-2009, 12:22 AM Alright John just left the house with the eggs . We shall see.
atreyu917 11-18-2009, 8:52 PM WOAH! That's so awesome. I wish I could have a pair of those babies...but I have a pair of false perc babies already. Sweet as they can be though.
johnr2604 11-19-2009, 5:37 AM WOAH! That's so awesome. I wish I could have a pair of those babies...but I have a pair of false perc babies already. Sweet as they can be though. Thanks, we are pretty excited to see what we get. I have been doing a lot of reading about the Rods onyx clowns and C-quest marine which is where Rods clowns came from if I understand correctly. They were created by trying to breed an all black True perc. I have also been doing some reading about Soloman Island onyx clowns in which I now believe the female is. Only because the male that I got her with that passed away was almost all black plus she has lost some color with age. I also know they were wild caught and came in on a tranship order. The male is just a standard ORA B/W ocellaris.
Its definetly peeked my interest in breeding. I am going to be doing a breeding setup in my new fish room. I'm curious to see if the B/w parentage makes the black really come out. I also want to try doing some selective breeding with some of the offspring and see what I can get. This is how ORA creates all their funky clowns. Its going to be an endevor I'm sure and might even be a project that can last years. I got nothing but time anyway
atreyu917 11-19-2009, 8:21 AM Taking over Bobz's job while he travels? hehehehee.
You will definitely need to make a log in breeder's corner so we can be kept updated! I'm so happy for you though, they will make some amazing babies.
This may be a stupid question, but are you going to be suspicious of sterility issues with these babies? Kinda like how you mix a horse and a donkey, but the baby is sterile. Just wondering, since they aren't exactly the same.

Just wondering, since they aren't exactly the same.I suppose it could be a concern and I know other fish such as hybrid Bass have this problem, However I know selective breeding and mixing species is how ORA has created some of the awsome clowns that they have. I really don't know what the outcome will be buts its like a giant science project for sure.
It will also be a little while before I get set up. John Lauth will get the first few batches of eggs if he wants them untill I get a breeding setup going and cycled. Then MY adventure will begin.
atreyu917 11-19-2009, 4:11 PM I'm really excited for you! I can't wait to see these babies and see them mature. Definitely will be interesting. Did you already say how long it takes them to hatch?
johnr2604 11-19-2009, 4:23 PM Well according to John he said it would probably take around 10 days. He came by and collected about half the eggs ( half were left to not stress the fish so they would keep laying) a day ago. He said they would probably hatch yesterday from the looks but Its probably going to be today. Its hard to tell because I may not have noticed the clutch right after they layed. I will be keeping a better eye out now.
temp seems to play the biggest role and it will vary depending on this. He also told me because the my temp is at 79deg that the female Perc probably forced the issue because Ocellaris like to breed at higher temps just above 80. I have been thinking about bumping my tank up a degree or two to put it at 80-81deg but am afraid to disrupt the stability.
BaboonScience 11-19-2009, 7:04 PM Well, I am planning for the hatchout tonight! I thought that they would hatch last night but gave up around 2 AM. They all look good and healthy so no problems with the methods. In fact, everything that I removed survived.
Next is the trick of getting them through the first 7 days. I recently added to the filtration system and of course the nitrates skyrocketed with the conditioning filter. Nitrates hit about 120, then started to settle down. Now to between 10 and 20 PPM. Thanks go to all of those that cleaned house and brought Bio Balls to the meeting! I am about half way to the 40 gallons that I need for a full blown filter. With the full blown system, I should be able to maintain about 3000 fish in growout. I also have been working on a refugium and a mangrove swamp for the system.
At any rate, I will post the results of tonights (hope) hatchout. Probably at about 2 AM again, so don't wait up!
And Thanks again John!
John
Very cool. keep us posted guys. and pics would be nice
Well looks like my female occ is preggers too. The male is a bw so after a few batches I'll try to raise them.
