I was looking for a way to support marine conservation. After some research, I found The Ocean Conservancy. I thought I'd pass along a few highlights. Is anyone here a member, or otherwise supporting them? Does the club officially (ie: financially) support any conservation groups?

http://www.oceanconservancy.org/

They got their start in 1972 with the Marine Mammal Act. They are not a political group, but a not-for-profit (ie: tax deductible donations / tax exempt) that works for "long-lasting solutions to threats facing our oceans."

They are currently working on 4 objectives:

Restore Sustainable American Fisheries
Protect Wildlife From Human Impacts
Conserve Special Ocean Places
Reform Government for Better Ocean StewardshipI did not get the sense that the governmental reform was partisan. They state the problem is "The existing U.S. ocean governance structure and policy is fragmented, disjointed, and ineffective at conserving our ocean resources and ecosystems."

They raise about $15 million a year in contributions and between 75-80% of that goes directly to program services. They state they have 500,000 volunteers and members and Money magazine recognized them in America's Top 100 charities. Their most recent 990 shows very reasonable compensation for officers and key employees. They have a current unqualified audit report, which is easily accessible.

"The Ocean Conservancy has worked for more than three decades toward its of goal of wild, healthy oceans. Increasing public awareness of ocean issues is one of the keys to bringing about significant changes to the way oceans are managed."
