View Full Version : XM Radio tips?
ericmcj31 10-28-2009, 8:48 PM We got the Mrs. a new car a few months ago...it came w/ the XM Radio-(which we love)....but I REFUSE to pay the $12+ a month subscription fee....any tips that you guys might have to saving some $$$ on that?? Didn't know if anybody had any personal experience w/ them discounting...??? I don't mind paying some-but to me the $12 is kinda excessive (I know, cheapskate-lol) Thanks!
James S. 10-28-2009, 8:52 PM I pay for two radios, well worth it IMO. I cant live without it.

40 cents a day is cheap for what you get. If I had to go back to terrestrial radio and listen to disc jockeys and their lame attempts at humor, plus nonstop commercials on my way to work, I would just turn the radio off and listen to my tires hum.
Can you tell I'm biased? :)

P-A-N-D-O-R-A!!!!! It is free. If you have a blackberry or other web enabled phone and bluetooth in your car, you can stream it to your phone and bluetooth it to the speakers. It is awesome.
Miami Dolfan 10-28-2009, 10:29 PM I paid a one time fee of $400 which is transferrable once but lasts forever with no more fees for that unit. The problem is you must buy a unit that you can change from car to car because of the transfer once policy.
weaglereefer 10-28-2009, 10:30 PM I loved having Sirius. That is until they tried to force a software upgrade to my equipment (their tech's words before he started backtracking) which caused it not to work any more. I was just driving around and the tuner changed to channel 184 and wouldn't change from that. They denied any fault and told me they could put my account on hold til I got a new receiver installed. I laughed and told them to cancel it (had it on 2 cars as well as an internet subscription we used for parties). I think I had them down to $6 per month per receiver + free internet when I was talking with the disconnect operator.
Miami Dolfan 10-28-2009, 10:34 PM I've got a Sirius unit used for the home that I used once after realizing that I had it through DirecTV. I spent $150 on it and it's ready to go for anyone interested. $65.

+1 to both of these...
ericmcj31 10-28-2009, 11:20 PM I honestly don't like the idea of paying for radio---but after having hers I can see chipping a little towards the radio--but didn't know if you guys had any tips to getting them down from the $12/month they like to charge :/
brianjfinn 10-28-2009, 11:22 PM Here's a tip: Don't buy their stock! ($0.565/share hehe)
brianjfinn 10-28-2009, 11:25 PM Actually, I've been considering buying it for my wife. She can't pick up AM stations well in her car, and she's expressed an interest in listening to talk radio more, which I have no problem encouraging. But, being an accountant, $12/month for radio does seem like a high price for something you can pretty much get for free (although we do have cable, which most people do, as well). I'll probably end up getting it for her in the end.
Don't think about it in terms of "paying for radio". Think about it as "paying so you don't have to listen to commercials". After all, that IS why you're paying....
washowi 10-29-2009, 1:44 AM 12 a month is CHEAP!!!!! Hell, thats a great deal..I have been with Sirius in my car for over 5 years.......Howard Stern !!!!
AndyMan 10-29-2009, 4:24 AM call up XM and tell them you wan the $27 for 5 months deal
ericmcj31 10-29-2009, 6:52 AM 12 a month is CHEAP!!!!! Hell, thats a great deal..I have been with Sirius in my car for over 5 years.......Howard Stern !!!!
Great! I'll let you foot the bill since it's so cheap! ;)
EnderG60 10-29-2009, 7:48 AM After my trial was up I told them I wanted to cancel. They asked what it would take to make me stay, i said half off. I got it.
brianjfinn 10-29-2009, 8:13 AM Half off is awesome. I bet you can get some great deals (if you're already a customer) since they're having so much trouble.
Mojo, if you haven't noticed, many channels are beginning to have a few commercials start creeping in. It's just like cable TV and MARTA. They say "No comercials, no advertising! Your payment for services will be enough to cover our costs." But, in reality it doesn't work. If Sirius/XM don't start receiving advertising income soon, they will go under. They screwed themselves by overpaying for their talent, and Howard Stern is a perfect example. $500 million for five years is not a contract I'd like to be bound to.

Keep in mind, though, that that's how they sold the world on cable TV in the beginning. Now it's loaded with infomercials. Pretty soon I predict more commercials and then we'll be paying "for the wide range of programming", just like TV has become.

and that will be the day I cancel.
Hell the only reason i pay for a DVR is so I can record what I want to watch and skip the adds.
jonboyb 10-29-2009, 9:33 AM Wife and I refused their monthly bills and got a 12 month contract for $77. It's about up so I guess I'll be negotiating again.
Mojo, if you haven't noticed, many channels are beginning to have a few commercials start creeping in.
Hmm- I haven't noticed that, and I listen to Sirius about 16 hours/day every day.... Maybe it's just certain channels.
As Ender said, the day they start adding commercials is the day I cancel.
Corigan 10-29-2009, 9:45 AM They have commercials on certain channels. NASCAR Radio and Howard Stern has commercials. I love Sirius, I've been a subscriber for over 4 years. I like it mostly for the uncensored Metal channel as it keeps me in the loop on new metal that I normally couldn't hear anywhere in Georgia.
reefdiver 10-29-2009, 2:22 PM i hear xm is now charging some type of music royalty fee i hear. they billed my card the other day and it was higher than normal. i will have to look into it and see if that is the case. that bites because i really like the choices in program. the commercials dont bother me that much as long as they keep the price low.
washowi 10-29-2009, 6:02 PM Eric.....do you pay for Satellite TV or Cable?
because it is no different.
As for commericals.....all talk shows have the commercials....no MUSIC channels have commercials.
James S. 10-29-2009, 6:05 PM Commercials on premium channels only... I only listen to Opie and Anthony XM-202 and Jason Ellis on Faction XM-52 Faction and a few other music channels so cant comment on the rest...I love it.
washowi 10-29-2009, 6:07 PM Opey and Anthony!! Listen to STERN!
James S. 10-29-2009, 6:23 PM Opey and Anthony!! Listen to STERN!
I dont have sirius on mine...and didnt want to give them anymore of my money just to listen to Stern. I did enjoy his show though when it was free for a week!! I like Artie alot. Hes such a shmuck! My kinda guy.
ericmcj31 10-29-2009, 10:13 PM I like Stern-he was hilarious on E! when on TV....and I'm sure LOTS more racy on Sirius.
washowi 10-29-2009, 10:22 PM Artie on Heroin....the Sybian rides......Sal, JD, Gary the Retard, Ba Ba Booey, Richard...Man it's funny stuff. Best Program on radio.......
AndyMan 10-29-2009, 10:35 PM Well, I cancelled my XM about 2 weeks ago... got a nice "Come Back to XM" in the mail today
6 months for $4.99/month OR 1 year for $6.48.. HUH?
call 877-291-5319
yah de yah..... oh yeah, for those that like Stern, it's included in the XM package as well
RedEDGE2k1 10-29-2009, 10:52 PM oh yeah, for those that like Stern, it's included in the XM package as well
No it's not, unless you pay an extra $2.99 per month to add the "Best of Sirius" package to your baseline $12.99 per month subscription.
That being said, Stern is a bore. Opie & Anthony (featuring Lil' Jimmy Norton) on XM202/Sirius197 is where the entertainment/comedy is. Originally I thought Jason Ellis was a dork, but he's growing on me lately too.
Lastly, some music channels DO have commercials. The channels with "cm" next to their name all have commercials (hence the "cm"). The only one I can think of is the country station, cant remember the exact name. I'm sure its HonkyTonkin Truck Drivin CM or something silly like that.

Don't take that tone with me Mr., I have never complained about the price! :)

DustinNo tone here, sorry if it sounded like that...
I'm just saying try calling them up and saying youre thinking abot cancelling. The agent will go away for about 30 secs then come back to you and say that you're a valued customer and they really want to keep you as a subscriber, then offer you something like $28 for 5 months
IF you cancel the subscription, you'll likely get the deal I just got offered (AND THAT INCLUDES NAV-TRAFFIC AS WELL)
You'll also notice that the number isn't the "regular" XM Radio phone number as well
AndyMan 10-29-2009, 11:28 PM ran out of editing time... here's the "letter/flyer" from xm

ericmcj31 10-29-2009, 11:30 PM thx., guys-gonna call 'em tomorrow (I hope)
AndyMan 10-29-2009, 11:35 PM They're gonna charge you for all the months up front (yeah, it's a risk but not really that much of a risk)
Certainly glad I've got 3 radios running XM (and 1 running Sisrius)
They're all running top of everything now...
IF THEY TRY THE... we've got to charge you a $15 change charge, hold your ground (never informed about this, you've been with XM for x years etc etc, they back down real easy on that one!
reefdiver 01-22-2010, 7:06 PM I called them and told them I wanted to cancel. I told them I did not like the fact that I was being charged a royalty fee, that there are way to many commercials on the channels, and that some of the music channels now have morning dj's. I can get on our local free radio stations. I have two radios with them and was being charged $74.00 for three months of service. The rep offered to lower my bill some, but I told him the only way I would consider keeping them would be if I could get the "come Back" deal. He did the ol let me see what I can do routine, and gave me 6.42 per month plus tax for both radios, and no royalty fees. 77.00 a year now. He also applied the 74.00 that was charged to my credit card toward the new rate.
thanks to all for info provided here on this thread.
AndyMan 01-22-2010, 7:20 PM Congrats on the great deal with XM! and I thought I got a good deal, you beat mine..
Dartfrog 01-22-2010, 11:13 PM I had my sirius radio/car stereo stolen out of my truck. Since it was the only place I listened to it, I asked Sirius if they could put a hold on my account till I got the new stereo installed (figured about two months). They offered me a free home receiver just to keep my account active, and then gave me free yr of internet access. I wasn't leaving them, and I thought they offered me alot.
Kirru 01-23-2010, 12:19 AM I love it, I originally got a radio for my dad since he got tired of the commercials but I ended up with that radio and he got one for his work place and he also uses it in his car.
I dont think we both could live with out it... I am kind of ticked now though. I am having horrible reception, I've reset the radio multiple times from their site and I have change the antenna position on my car, still get really bad dead spots and I am talking completely open area with no clouds and no type of overhead wires.. driving me crazy!! anyone have an idea how to resolve that? I am not sure what we pay but I think my dad would like to have it cut. lol
coolsurf 01-23-2010, 8:04 AM I'm definately late in this conversation but I must say that I absolutely love Sirius/XM Radio. I've had it for 3 years now and can't go back. The enjoyment of driving to work and not hearing 3 different competitors diamond commercials on the way...! The lifetime is the best deal and if you get a removable unit, you can swap out between vehicles, campers, boats etc. Something to think about.
EnderG60 01-26-2010, 2:26 PM hmm can you do lifetime for non-removable units?
remember, its like a phone plan. They have the infrastructure all setup and its running no matter what, so keeping the money(any money) coming in at all times is the main goal for them.
