My clown fish eggs just hatched, and I've never done this before. Anyone know where you can buy live rotifers in the Atlanta area? Or anything that these little guys will eat? I'm based in Decatur (if my username didn't tip you off).

Thanks,
Josh

You need to have green water and rotis set up a month or so ahead of when you plan to have a batch. Best of luck with it.

sorry to hijack...

Sparky are you raising babies now and set up to? If you have a larvel trap I have a clutch of Occ. eggs I will trap for you. They will go soon, they have eyes..

Thanks for the quick answers, everyone. I bought some live rotifers locally via ebay—delivered within a couple of hours. I've got about 50 larvae chowing down in a nursery tank and about 20-30 more healthy looking eggs that didn't hatch yet. What a fun little surprise this whole experience has been. What do you guys do with all the clownfish you breed? Mine look like false percula.

I called Keen Reef, by the way, along with just about every other fish store in Atlanta to no avail. I posted my experience here - http://www.pastemagazine.com/high_gravity/2009/09/baby-clownfish-awesome-of-the-day.html

Have you researched and set up a dedicated system for them? Its not really all that easy to raise fry to adulthood. You need a system culturing rotifers, a system culturing green water and eventually HUFA enriched NHBS. Best of luck, they eat alot more than you will think and you need to be doing daily water changes to keep the water clean.

Hey RockDog, I think I am too stupid to understand. help a lay person please.

I have 2 x 10gal systems breeding the roti/pods like nothing!!! I empty about 10 gals into my main system every week.

Guys, the maintenance of this is VERY easy. MISU came round, collected 1 gal and has her own culture running now. The key is a very good supply of green water.

There is NO reason you can get this running yourself.

You are so right. We go through about 1 gal of green water every 2 days!!! There is no stopping these guys!

I've used both Green water (live phyto) cultures and Instant Algae (Reed Maricultute) to keep my rotifer cultures going while I was raising my clowns. The instant algae was MUCH easier to feed the rotifers although the initial investment was higher.

I pretty much use green water (Tetraselmis) for my rotifer cultures. I keep a stock culture of rotifers going all of the time and ramp up to what I need several (3-5) days before the fish hatchout. The result is plenty of rotifers and plenty of green water.
I do use instant algae (Reeds) and even DT's for a backup.
