View Full Version : Biggest hermit I've ever seen!
I bought this beast over the weekend -- he's a monster! Put him in my predator tank along with a huge panther grouper, lunar wrasse and dog faced puffer. Kevin promised me that NO ONE would mess with the big boy!
You can decided -- he's cleaned the sand bed completely in just one day, now it's frozen food for the "little guy".
Sorry for the quality of the picture!
I've seen bigger. But pretty cool none the less. If you it wasn't a sponsor forum, I would tell you where...
That's OK, I'm sure there's always one BIGGER! Just caught me off guard and couldn't resist. I did post similar in Photography Forum if you care to divulge your source!
CodSack 09-01-2009, 8:48 PM That's way cool. Did you give him a name?
and I did. I made sure I didn't intrude on Kevin's space. I know better. Raj would beat me with the ban stick.

Steve don't lie you know you would enjoy that.
Don that thing is huge what size tank is it in?
I think it was a 75 if I do remember correctly.
Acroholic 09-01-2009, 9:19 PM That bigger hermit Steve mentioned is huge!
Stevhan 09-01-2009, 10:01 PM I have seen one at a wholesale place a while back that was 10+ inches. It was insanely huge it was sold though. I wanted to buy it just for a tank of its own. The thing wieghed about 2 lbs it seemed.
I think giant hermits make cool easy pets...they dont care what you feed them.
I think it was a 75 if I do remember correctly.
Yeah, it's a 75g and I'm already in love with this monster! The other "beasts" in the tank are giving it some space! The lunar wrasse come up checking out the smelt that he's eating and all he gets is some antennae "feel" from the big boy and he backs off!
Rbredding 09-02-2009, 12:53 PM Did you give him a name?

I gave a big crab to Jen at Imagine a few weeks ago. He had eaten over 5 fish that i
I knew of. He wouldn`t even leave a skeleton when he ate them. Hopefully he is doing great in his new home.

Well the darndest thing happened. My huge hermit decided to downsize his home. I never figured the recession would sink that deep! His butt's barely covered in his new home. As you can see from the first picture he had a mansion - hope he figures this nonsense out and goes back into his old home. (anyone every had this happen to one of their hermits?)
LilRobb 11-18-2009, 4:52 PM Don,
that's an awesome pic, almost like a 300lbs girl wearing a thong...

Tiny gets my vote! :lol2:
ricksconnected 11-18-2009, 5:24 PM you should set up a new post "name this crab" to see what different names you might get.
glxtrix 11-18-2009, 5:35 PM hahahahahaha, THATS FUNNY!
atreyu917 11-18-2009, 7:13 PM I still say Gnarkill. This picture is FAIL hahahaha.
Silly hermit. Settled for a cardboard box house instead of the mansion.
Rbredding 11-18-2009, 7:31 PM maybe that one is just his toilet...
You can't call him Crabzilla - that's been done. We had a huge hermit like that once, he was given to us (due to his appetite for pricey fish) and we kept him in the sump. He outgrew every shell we had... we eventually put a 2" PVC 90-degree elbow in for him and he wore that - he looked pathetic naked. Wish I still had a pic of him - it was funny to see him with his "tightie whities" PVC panties
Jenn
Well the government's stimulus package must be working, he's back in his original shell (for now). Anyone know where I can find a variety of shells that I can offer "claws" when he decides to go naked again?
Plastic pipe must have been a funny sight.
atreyu917 11-19-2009, 10:55 AM Petco has big ones for the land hermits
JennM 11-19-2009, 11:03 AM So do I but not sure if they'd be big enough. See if somebody has a "seashell collection" that might have one :)
Jenn
Smoothie 11-19-2009, 11:12 AM Maybe you should break the point off of that shell to give him better mobility. May be why he is looking at other homes.
With those claws you could call him Pac-Man
atreyu917 11-19-2009, 12:20 PM Pacquiao!
good fight, good fight.

Wow! I was wondering if someone would ever buy that thing!!

I've actually thought of that, it isn't the most maneuverable home, thanks!
Wow! I was wondering if someone would ever buy that thing!!
I didn't get the biggest one there, he's still available if anyone's interested. Just saw him this noon time.
Corigan 11-20-2009, 10:35 AM Call him.. "Better with Butter.."
Matt
Rbredding 11-20-2009, 11:58 AM get him a nautilus shell..
Call him.. "Better with Butter.."
Matt
You won! But it won't be "better with butter" just tears! This thread is dead, I'm sad. Since the little buggers can't talk - you sometimes have no clue as to what to do to fix the problem. Sometimes nothing you do matters :(
jason sartain 11-20-2009, 7:46 PM What?Did he die???
Yup, couple of hours ago, can't believe it and he had so many friends following his "personal issues" in this thread!
atreyu917 11-20-2009, 7:51 PM ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh noooooooooooooooo
jason sartain 11-20-2009, 7:53 PM Sorry to hear this,it is always hard when you lose a buddy.
Corigan 11-20-2009, 10:11 PM Sorry to hear of your loss. That was one massive hermit.
ricksconnected 11-20-2009, 10:19 PM that sucks. is your water quality good?
atreyu917 11-20-2009, 10:21 PM Old age by now you'd think!
ricksconnected 11-20-2009, 10:23 PM maybe so. i dont know enough about them to know how big/long they live.
atreyu917 11-20-2009, 10:24 PM Usually in aquaria, I've seen that most need to replace their clean up crew once every year or so...due to them killing each other etc....nasty little guys
ricksconnected 11-20-2009, 10:26 PM yes ive noticed my crab collection numbers getting smaller over the last few months. i have 1 bully crab i think is responsible
Hackman72 11-20-2009, 11:10 PM Man, that's awful. I was into this thing too. Sorry to hear it.
ricksconnected 11-21-2009, 8:09 AM thats a possibility too.
Sure it wasn't a molt?
Thanks, but I did a quick dissection and there was flesh inside his hard exterior. Happened last month though - my son says your crab is dead. Found exoskeleton (sp?) in sand. Didn't think much of it but found him later alive in the shell. Was hoping that was the case this time as well, but no such luck.
Sorry to hear this,it is always hard when you lose a buddy.
I can't stand to be without a "buddy" so I really got the biggest hermit I've ever seen today @ Warehouse Aquarium. (It's like replacing Marcus Allen with Refrigerator Perry) He's at least twice the size of the one we've followed for a while in this post. To understand his size the lemon peel in the background is full grown. And of course there's the usual ruler in the foreground.
stacy22 11-21-2009, 5:19 PM Wow!
atreyu917 11-21-2009, 5:54 PM Gigantor!
