View Full Version : Marc's 240 Reef is now a 309 Gallon Cube
coral_hog 08-09-2009, 11:42 PM Last November I broke down and sold my 240 just before moving. I kept all my animals in a stock tank until now. finally after 10 months I got off my lazy "A" and built a stand and transfered my animals to the new tank. Attached are a few pics. I'll attach more once the tank settles in and the animals find happiness in their new environment.

coral_hog 08-27-2010, 6:47 PM Sorry for being MIA.. I have been on the road now since this time last year.. I'm up on the Northern Slope of Alaska playing with the polar bears, and will be for a good time, so my wife is currently the master reef keeper in the house... :-) Anyway.. updates will be on the way in a months time...(I'm hoping to be home for a few days around the end of September) Hopefully I'll be able to take a few good pictures and post them for you, as there have been some moderate changes, even a few radical ones... which I'm sure.. I will catch hell for when I post about them. CHANGES??? how if you have been away for so long...? Well, being away from my system for so long, I have had plenty time to think about what I was trying to achieve and just re-evaluate my setup.. while I'm away working.., I spend quite a large amount of time researching and calculating how to incorporate my ideas, in a quest to improve the color and growth or my corals, while trying to tame my electrical cost.. then on my weekend trips home, I lock myself in my fish room and struggle to modify parts of my system within the timeframe I have before catching a flight back out.. Now.. ask me how I am able to do this without spending any time with my wife... ha, ha.. easy.. I don't sleep... when she goes to bed.. I slip off and work.. She has me during the daylight hours and half the night.. (referencing the statement above about careful planning) Anyway, as a spoiler.. I am slowly moving towards a low light system... or at least that is my thinking right now.. but then again.. in the 9 years that I have been keeping reefs, I've shifted back and forth between softies and SPS multiple times... so who knows where things will end up by the time it's all finished.
Anyway... to all who have posted recently showing interest in where my tank stands...
Thanks for showing interest.
DrNecropolis 08-28-2010, 3:38 AM Good lord.. North Slope.. Supposed to snow wednesday.. Up around Barrow or more in The Interior?

I wish I could.. I'm stuck on Liberty island.. A few miles off the northern Alaska coast on a man made island planning the construction of 274.. the largest and first extended reach drilling rig. It's been snowing here continuously for the last 11 days, on top of that, every other day either a category 1 or 2 storm seems to follow.
I know that this doesn't apply to reefs, but attached are a few pics of the jobsite.

No, the Forum rule against racially motivated postings is being enforced. You have already been warned once. Now if you wish to complain any further, I will take it to the next step.
bobbyp 11-06-2010, 4:58 PM Wasnt complaining...was publicly appologizing in the event that my post had been reported due to offending someone. Anyway...sorry coral_hog to have cluttered your thread with this.
Dave, did you not read that he wanted to apologize? Or maybe you missed that? Come on.
Tank looks sweet Mark and the jobsite does indeed look cold.

coral_hog 11-11-2010, 10:05 PM A while back, I said that I would post pictures when I returned. Well, I returned home on Monday, and all was good, aside from a small buildup of algae on the glass. Below are a few pics. I couldn't take pictures of everything, but these capture the greater portion.
Back in the 240 days.. I had an elaborate filtration system. With this system, I have cut back drastically to a KISS system. About 8 Months ago, or maybe 9.., (I can't remember) I removed the skimmer, sump, refugium, ozone unit,
and sulfur reactor. In this system, I have two barracuda pumps on closed loops with a hayward 1 1/2 inch electronic ball valve for water motion. Other than that All I have is a Calcium Reactor set up to keep the calcium levels in check. For nutrient export, I have 8 different forms of macro algae in the tank, some is actually in there for the look, others like cheatomorpha are hidden in the back and are the workhogs. My sand bed is 14 inches deep and helps with keeping nitrates low as well. Other than that, I have 2 400 watt 20k metal halides (iwasaki) running on lumatek ballasts.

Weather took that trip away from me. In regards to my wife... I can't complain... everything is still alive.
It's pretty cool... I like to see a tank with some algae in it. Au Naturale! LOL
FTS would be awesome if you have one.

Sorry that it has taken so long to do this... but I'm rarely home long enough to get all the things done that I'd like.
Here is a full tank shot. The lights just came on, so everything isn't as happy and open as I'd like them to be, especially when it's being posted, but I'm not sure when I'd find time to do this again if I didn't do it now... I'll attempt to post a better picture later.
