After the foam was trimmed I used this 2 Part 30 min Epoxy from Hobby Lobby for about $12.00 to Add Sand to the wall to make it look more realistick and to protect it from UV.

1st I Mixed the Epoxy in a plastic cup and then I used a small paint brush to paint the entire wall with the Epoxy.

2nd Let the epoxy get Tacky and the Pour Sand/ Crushed Coral onto the wall and let it sit for 1 hr.

Repeat steps1 & 2 3 times or untill the Foam is fully Covered.

Warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Epoxy Will Stick too or Bond just about anything Use in a safe area.

What a great build thread. A+. I think Ill do this on my 30 cube. Which foam did you use? I am wondering if I need the foam from Drs F&S or if normal foam-o-fill is reef safe.

C3gear
07-26-2009, 9:46 PM
I used the regular great Stuff foam in the red can. I have read many threads on RC and nobody has had any issues with this foam. But there are about 3-4 different kinds that you can use.

C3gear

Here is the Finished Product for now, I had to add a little more foam to the top because I trimmed too much off.http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l112/C3clothing/Tank/100_1101.jpg?t=1248659209

Awesome. Thanks! Ive seen people stuff bits of rubble in the foam as well to add more texture.

C3gear
07-26-2009, 9:53 PM
I added texture by cutting the foam jagged instead of trying to make the wall look smooth, There is alot of peaks and valleys, Also the Crushed Coral added to the sand made the texture great.

My Hermit crabs climb up and down the wall like there on level ground, lol

This may be a little out of sequence but who cares,

Since I don't have the room for a sump I had to make this project an AIO.

I planned to make the back chambers to have 3 sections

Overflow, Fuge , and return.

I used a pieces and GE TYPE 1 100% Silacone of acrylic I bought at Lowes to make the section.

would it have been easier to just start off by applying the dry sand and pieces of rock to the foam while it was still "wet" ?

I love the outcome..

I never thought that it would be acceptable to use spray foam in an aquarium.. HAHA

No, when the foam was wet the sand would not adhere to it as well, Also the Epoxy makes the wall hard like a rock on the outside.

So after I did the dry run I noticed that , I cut too much foam from the back of the wall for it to sit flush with the back chamber.

So I had to add more foam to fill it in and re trim and Epoxy it:grrr:

After the Extra foam was added and epoxied, and a little cure time.

WE HAVE WATER:yay::yes:

I also bought a nice piece of seed rock from Petco of all places, It was full of life and is covered in Green, red, pink aand purple Coraline. And it was fully cured as I have noticed it sitting in the store for over a month or so.

Also if you are following you will notice I cut the return vents of of the wall since it was making my Overflow/Surface skimmer ineffective.

I love a firefish. He'll hang out most of the time there until feeding time. Then he gets active. Later if you want something really cool and small that will remind you of shark week during feeding check out a neon/cleaner goby.
That damsel will get large though and will be the devil when you add more fish

Probably too late, but see if you can take those fish back. Start the nitrogen cycle with a piece of shrimp from Publix, not with fish that will suffer and likely die.

The reading was 86.8, But the walmart fan did the job fine.

The CPU Fans are all clean, I built them myself and they both have the sensor set in the bios for a heat issue,

The bigger prob may be the way the contractors installed my ac unit, This room just doesn't get that much air flow.

Haha good luck with that then it seems like your relying on luck to make sure you just happen to see the fish jump out.......Jawfish are know jumpers and you need a lid. I had an eggcrate lid wrapped in plastic mesh and the jawfish still jumped through it somehow. I really hope for your fishes sake you research their needs a bit more. Im done with this thread, it started off cool with the wall but now its just frustrating to watch.

If you don't mind me asking.

What needs are not being met? or what steps have I overlooked?

All help or Criticism will be greatly appreciated.

You're just doing what every amateur does on their first tank...moving way too fast. I don't know anyone who would cycle a tank with a firefish. Damsels are typically used because of there hardiness, but either way it is considered inhumane.

Yeah, a bit too late but thanks for the advice, I really just wanted some fish.

You arent researching enough and just throwing fish and corals haphazardly into the tank. You are doing what you want and who cares about the care of the fish. You could have taken the fish back but chose not to because you care more about your gratification than the health of your livestock. If you had researched jawfish and fire fish you would have found out very quickly that they are jumpers and you need a lid BEFORE you buy the fish. And on that note im out and unsubscribing. Happy Reefing.

Don't take these things the wrong way please. Hopefully it all works out for you. Everyone is just speaking from their own past experiences posted on here.
Best to slow down and resist these sales so you enjoy the hobby more by keeping your livestock alive and well. Trust me there are members and sponsors that post sales on here all year long that will make your head spin. Personally wish I lived closer

I think the frustation is that there are a lot of people with a LOT of experience and they have tried to guide u as far as adding things so quickly and such and it doesnt seem that u have listened.. just my 2 cents on why people may be frustrated.... i think the tank looks great tho :-p

how often are you checking params? and how often are you doing water changes with the time frame your adding so many things when i started in december most people i talked to said to wait at LEAST 2 weeks between additions to give the system time to get used to the extra bioload... again just my 2 cents

Edit: aparently it takes me a long time to form my thoughts this late as im like 5 posts past where i thought i was gonna be :-p

Thanks, to all that replied

I do admit I have moved fast during this build.

I think that people are looking at the pics and thinking that its real time.
All of the pics that I have posted so far are all past photos.

So when someone suggest that I do or not do something its 3 weeks or more late since all my post have not caught up to the correct date yet.

1st- thanks for posting progress. It's rare people do. I just got a camera and computer that isn't a POS to do so myself and still haven't.
2nd- Handle the param deals you have going on before adding anything else. Trust me. If a deal goes by another will come by even better

If you're getting ammonia readings, which it looks likes you are, I fear that bad things will happen. Ammonia is VERY toxic to fish, even in small amounts. You should be having zero readings always. With the load of fish you have, Im afraid that there is cycle that is on the horizin. Keep doing water changes, and monitor the wtaer parameters. Be prepared to do MAjority water changes (on the order of 75%).

So I woke up one night and checked the tank to notice my jawfish wandering around out of his burrow, he stated staying in the front corner of the tank behind the thermometer.

By the time I woke up he had dug a hole all the way to the bottom.

So I added more sand and started dropping LR rubble near him. Over the period of about 1.5 weeks he had constructed his Masterpiece.

Here are a few pics.

He eats anything I feed him, He seems to like the Formula 2 Pellets though.

I spot feed him with a straw since I feed him more than the others.

He bites the tip of the straw while waiting for the Pellets to drop out.

A few hours later I see a big pile of sand forming and then...................................Peek-A-Boo
Out come his little head from a new burrow built right next to the one I made for him:shout:. I guess mine wasn't as comfy as I thought.

Well, its been a while since I did a real update
but if anyone has been following along there has been a lot of changes.

1st major change was, I found a new home for my Blue Spot Jawfish after I caught him attempting to go Carpet Surfing.

I also feel like my tank was a bit small for him too.

Here are a few new pics before his departure.

snails stayed on the wall more than the glass. also my hermit crabs love to climb up and down it.

The wall has never moved. I made it so that my return holds it in place, also sand at the bottom helps it stay in place also.
