Jenn, do you know what size pump the chiller requires?

JennM

Not offhand. No manual with it... but I can do a bit of research.

Generic answer (found for another brand's model) 600-1000 gph.

Thanks. I know this sounds stupid to consider a chiller with T5s, but I have to run a large fan to stay below 83, and I don't like the look or (constant) noise level. It would be cheaper to run a small chiller than keep a large house at 72 degrees.

Not high jacking but i have a 1/4 chiller with my t5s (although they are overdriven) and i only have a little over a 100gallons

Mag 7 then probably.
Let me dwell on it for a few and if not spoken for I'll post back.
Thanks a bunch!

Lights are not the only thing that heats water. Pumps heat water. A pump that puts out 93 Watts for example (Mag 9.5 for instance) is equivalent to having a 93-watt heater in your tank.

So yes, even with cooler lighting, it's possible to have a warm tank. Tally up your return pump, skimmer pump and any powerheads or other devices and you get heat.

I'm sure that's it (combined with a 78 degree house). I have a large recirc pump, two K4s and a Mag 5 return (plus two baby pumps to feed the skimmer and phosban reactor). Even with only two bulbs burning I just went and checked my temp and it's at 80.7. If I don't use the fan, I'll be at 83 by lights out. This is with an open top and fixture 6" above tank rim.

Not unusual, to be sure.

Do you have a picture of the chiller? (or a model number?)

Canister Filter is spoken for. :)

What model / capacity is the skimmer?

JennM
07-02-2009, 6:32 PM
It's a Red Sea Prizm - standard model...

Vendor: Red Sea

The Prizm is sized and priced to deliver the absolute best results for the serious hobbyist while remaining very affordable. The Prizm is without a doubt the best skimmer available today for any aquarium up to 100 gallons. The Prizm is an ideal starting point for anyone setting up a new tank or interested in maximizing the results on their existing aquarium. The Prizm can be easily upgraded to a Deluxe version with the purchase of an upgrade kit.

The slim line profile (only 2.4" wide) allows the Prizm to be discretely hung on behind the aquarium or on the side of the sump, with it's fully submersible motor it can even be placed inside the sump! The numerous advantages of the Prizm make this the ideal skimmer of choice for the serious hobbyist.

* Designed for Hang-on Tank installations -Skim-enhancing, convergent-divergent reaction chamber with "Triple-pass" air flow
* -18-blade "Turbojet" air injector - generates a constant stream of micro-bubbles in a homogenous air/water mixture -Flow regulator optimizes the skimming action for all aquarium conditions - Includes external water pump -Ideal for both new and experienced marine aquarists -User-friendly operation and set-up

I'm not a fan of these... but it's better than no skimmer :) Came to me used, so I'm moving it on.

Barry - no pressure... but I have another interested party on the chiller.

Trying to get a pic in a sec- between this thread and the IceCap thread I'm typing as fast as I can :)

Trying to do a little homework on noise level, otherwise I'd take it. If it sells, my loss.
Plus, the non-rich guy in me is thinking shop for two quiet fans that will do what I need. Usually my wants beat my caution, though.

I'm wondering how often I'd be hearing it run with a 90/30 sump at the above temps?

JennM
07-02-2009, 7:01 PM
I haven't run it myself so I can't even give you a hint on the noise thing. I have a very ancient one similar and it runs in the back room which is uber-noisy with pumps and things so I can't even tell if mine is "noisy"!

Jenn, I understand no warranty. If I agree to buy it, would we be able to at least make sure it works first?

JennM
07-02-2009, 7:14 PM
Yes, of course :)

Read above, changed my mind. :) I just don't want one with the coil that goes in the sump.

I had another PM about it so I've PM'd that party back...

OK, let me know. I'm ready.

JennM
07-02-2009, 7:45 PM
DOH! You must type faster than I do... and that's saying something.

Normally Wed. would be fine - BUT next week I'm going to a Seachem training session. We'll only be open from 5-8 on Tues-Wed-Thurs. Brian is covering for me, and wouldn't you know -his work has got busy lately (he was off all last week - doh!)

If that works for you - I'll let Brian know - and please call first in case Brian's real job keeps him late.

Jenn

I can come up later in the day if I need to. Would you be able to verify operation for me ahead of time? I certainly trust you.

JennM
07-02-2009, 7:51 PM
I'll see if I can get Brian to fire it up. Later... as in later Wed? (Just trying to be clear here...I've got a lot of irons in the fire right at the moment and I'm easily confused :) )

Jenn

JennM
07-02-2009, 8:03 PM
He's got it fired up now. Pretty quiet really - he's got the cover off and all I can hear is the fan's gentle purring...

I don't have a way to test the refrigerant etc., but I have a guy... he does charge for it, but he can test and recharge it if it needs.

If you're interested in that (you'll probably want to see/test the unit first...) let me know and I can arrange that if need be. He services our chillers and I had him charge up another one for somebody a couple of weeks ago.

Jenn

I'm talking about Wed, yes. If it can be fired up while I'm there I have an infrared thermometer and can check the output piping.

JennM
07-02-2009, 8:09 PM
Yep. It's chilling now - we don't have it hooked up to a tank... just fired it up to make sure the compressor works etc. So you're welcome to test before you buy.

I'll let Brian know to expect you Wed after 5.

So... unless you change your mind - chiller is tentatively SOLD!
