View Full Version : Any one running a closed loop system
ramses66 05-22-2009, 7:18 PM I looking at running a closed loop system on my tanks that I haven't bought yet. I looking at having 2 150 gallon tanks (using one as a fish only tank) the other as a reef tank.
Any feedback on the pro's and con's would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
grouper therapy 05-22-2009, 7:25 PM I run a closed loop with a dart and 3 sea swirls
I have no cons since the pump is in the basement. It has been running 2 years nonstop.
ramses66 05-22-2009, 8:09 PM Do you think the Dart pump would sound loud if it was in a living area? You have an awesome tank. The closed loop really cleans up the tank. That's the look I want to have.
grouper therapy 05-22-2009, 8:48 PM I am probably the wrong one to ask about sound levels. Any noise from my tank drives me crazy(short trip). All my equipment is in my basement. A friend of mine says the dart is not too noisey for him. I tell you who to ask would probably be Danny Bradley or Chris at fishscales. I think Danny or Chris do some upscale high end systems. Danny has alot of experience with the different pumps in different scenarios.
Fish Scales2 05-22-2009, 9:57 PM I have a 150 with closed loop system and a dart running the closed loop system for sale. I cannot think of a downside to a closed loop system. Mount your cl pump on a rubber base and will dampen the noise some. You can also insulate the inside of the stand to help dampen as well. I actually do not remember hearing the system running but that could just me being used to it. Or it could be I just enjoy the sound and do not notice it.
The benefit to running the cl is volume of flow, no powerheads and you can even run a tidal wave barrel (similiar to a SCWD) but must make sure that you do not exceed 1500gph. So I would T off the cl pump and run 2 returns full time and another 4 of the wave barrel. Hope that made sense.
I hope Danny post as well, he has built way more systems than I, one of systems = about 3 of mine or more.:D

Will the Dart Pump you have for sale drive 300 gallons? Is it self priming?
Fish Scales2 05-22-2009, 11:14 PM It is actually the entire system for sale, tank, stand, canopy, sump, pumps but no lighting. You would need to setup separate cl pumps for each tank. It could be done (running 1 cl pump on 2 displays but would take some discussing) using the new Reeflo Blackfin 3600 or 6000 depending on what your plans are. Sounds like you are planning on 1 sump, is this correct?
ramses66 05-22-2009, 11:33 PM 1 sump that correct.
Planning to build in wall, don't need a stand, but will consider
What size tanks do you have for sale?

Fish Scales2 05-23-2009, 12:09 AM Nice, side by side? Mine is a 4' 150. Not sure why you to connect Fish only tank to reef, keep in mind that if you add aggresive fish that they will produce alot more waste than your reef will. Also the FO tank has no need for massive flow. This could be one incredible system if put together with proper components on the front side, if not it could be one very long headache.
To answer your ? as to what tanks I have for sale: over 100 gal
4' 150
6' 150
6' 125
7' 215
LilRobb 05-23-2009, 12:13 AM And a 225g that needs repair?
Or is that one gone?
Fish Scales2 05-23-2009, 12:17 AM No to lazy to take it all the way apart and glue back together. Waiting on someone to ask me to put starfire front glass on. Seems silly to fix it with small scratches on it. Oh and theres a 6' 240 sittin the driveway for free.:D
downsides to a closed loop, got to drill the tank for it, any hole is a potential leak, though there are ways to reduce this.
but more to the point, its not customizable, you need to plan ahead, to be sure the holes are where you want them, because you cant really remove a hole, and adding a hole is even harder.
powerheads are defenitely easier. also with the new era of propellor power heads, a closed loop is extremely expensive in comparison. a korilia or one of those whatever that tim has are like 1500-3000gph of wide flow for 40-50$, and virtually silent, plus pull like 50 watts. vs something like a dart, 300$ or so for 3600gph before head loss and 145watts. propellors > impellors for moving water IMO.
close loops arent bad... they keep the tank clean, but they certainly have some cons.

Yeah got a couple of months to plan. I converting my garage into a family room. Going for a in wall system, Seems like closed loop will keep everything low profile.
Smoothie 05-23-2009, 3:25 AM Hey Chris
I'm about to run a reeflo baracuda for the CL on my 180. Can you send me any info on the tidal wave barrels?
