View Full Version : When will the corals reproduce?

Hi! I was pondering (and this is gonna sound so stupid) but I was wondering if corals were kinda like hair. When you cut it, it comes back quicker, thicker, and more of it. Is that how fragging corals is? Do I need to make the first move and frag them so they come back quicker, thicker and more? I'm interested in starting to sell my corals, since I'm spending lots on them, too. So, I need to know if I should start fragging so that more will come back. I also am in the process of setting up one 10g refugium, and one 5g refugium. That's where I plan to keep the babies and ect. So thanks for all the help I've gotten here from the past month, you all are a GREAT help!
Thanks!
Radha

you need good lighting for growth. Some prefer low, some prefer high. I have one set of zoas that have to be at the bottom or they will not grow, vs I have a set that wont even open unless they're at the top. That said, a refugium usually does not have the right kind of light for grow out (you might, just speaking generally). fragging does not speed up the growth in my experance. just leave them alone, and they'll grow thier best on their own if conditions are right.

Things like kenya tree are extremely easy to frag and trasplant, vs some zoas that you have to cut the rock in order to separate them at times.

some LPSs are best left untouched as they do not take the fragging process very well.......

good luck

Ive heard people say their SPS grows faster after it has been fragged... Ive not read any conclusive evidence that would make me believe it.

on the flip side, I am pretty sure if I have 10 3polyp zoa frags vs 1 30polyp colony, Ill get more growth from 10 seperate colonies just based on them having more realestate to expand to, more "leading growth edge" so to speak

This is actually a misperception - it feels that way, but it's proven it does not.

Ha ha! Ok, well then I guess I'll leave them alone. I have a metal halight by the way. Is it ok if I have my melon zoas at the top of the tank? They're opening up and seeming just fine to me. Those are the ones I want to frag. What about yellow polyps? I also want my torch coral to split, will it do that itself?

What about my chalice? Will it reproduce?

Chalice tends to be a slow grower. Don't try to frag it unless u sure u can get at least ONE complete eye.

corals dont really... reproduce, atleast not chalices, sps, and most other LPS. mushrooms can split, and zoas of course bud up new babies. but in the end, to get a frag you got to frag it.

An exception (and there may be more) are plate corals. My plate drops babies regularly. Also, I have baby 'shrooms all over the place that I don't think got there from splitting.

I THINK mushrooms can bud of new ones that will fall off on their own and float to a new spot. I think anyway.

I have MILLIONS of mushrooms just floating around my tank. I just found a new one hiding, a green striped. What a beauty. And will nuclear greens split?
Thanks!

Millions in a 20g tank - quick send me some before it's all over grown...

Ya, I'll do that! :D But I'm sure your gonna want them to grow out a little more. I have these amazing ones, they're mixed breeds, and they are red with blue neon stripes. I'll have to take some pics, but as soon as they reproduce, I will start giving them away.
Thanks!

zoas and palys will just bud up a new little head at the edge of the colony, it slowly grows to be full. so they dont split, but rather just... creep... creating new polyps along the way.

My baby shroom is attached to a rock. How do I get it off? Without hurting it obviously. I can't leave ot on the rock, because it will get little or NO light.
Thanks!

hurt a mushroom? you honestly can't unless you try to kill it with fire. I think if i put one of my mushrooms and a blender, and liquidfy I'f get like a million (do not attempt). Just let it be, mushy's need almost no light. I can grow shrooms with a led that's half dead lol.

If you have that many shrooms put them in a container with rumble rock and they attach. You can than sell/trade/give to people.

Ok.. should I just pull it, or cut it with scissors?

you can cut it off with a scalpel I believe. also heard you can aim a power head at it and itll release pretty quickly.

Thats innaccuarte. Many corals, including SPS, will spawn. There are males and females, and the males release sperm and the females eggs. It ahs even been witnessed in the home aquarium.

Now that is cool. Oh, well, I guess I'm gonna have to get 1 more chalice.... that's gonna be expensive... yikes!

I killed my chalice... couple hundred dollars and a snail knocked it over, face down in the sand overnight for a tiny frag, dont see it recovering from that...

Ha ha! Ya, I think I know what you mean. But I'm sure you'll find some more chalices on ARC for a good price.
Good luck.
