I'm really into breeding things. It is so much fun, to raise the little guys, get them great homes and all. So, after all my baby mollies were gone, that's when I decided I wanted to go into marine animal breeding. I am currently setting up my refugium, so I have that handy, I also have an Eclipse tank that I'm gonna set up as another refugium. Now, lemme get to the point. Since I am currently in the process of clownfish breeding, I decided to try and breed something to pass the time. Then, I thought of breeding clams! So here is the website I found. http://www.reefbuilders.com/2008/04/30/reef-ramblings-clamming-around-part-ii-spawning-tridacnids/. It's a good website, I have learned a lot. I was wondering if any of the people on here have bred clams. I tried the MOFIB website, it didn't have anything. Also, if someone maybe wants to try it with me, we could do this together. Tips or partners welcome!
Thanks a lot!
Radha

I have only met one guy local that might have the knowledge to breed clams, but apparently it isnt the easiest thing to do. I know nothing about it, but I would definantly think it would be worth a shot.

All I remember when chatting with him was that tehy were extremely sensitive to boron and bromide, which apparently is in many of the synthetic salts we use in excess as a buffering agent. Dunno how true that is, but good luck and I hope you figure it out.

nope, didnt know it could be done to be honest. just know that it is BAD news if it happens in your display. but in a little 10g tank or whatever, seems fair.

based on growth of clams in my tank, Id presume itll be a while before itll be of reasonable size to sell though. but no big deal I suppose. if it works, take pics!

So basically it is either you get it right or the clam dies? (gulp)..... ok then..... :)

Spawning clams is not hard, but rearing the larva is near impossible. Clam breeding farms nowadays use natural seawater, and natural food from it. For all reasonable purposes, it is impossible for the home aquarists.

Just be careful. Spawning clams quickly multiply the organic load into the water column, so, typically massive water changes are necessary to prevent crashes. And also, for what its worth, trigger clams to spawn is usually a bit "harsh". In Indo-Pacific clam farms, they remove the broodstock from the water for periods of time to stress them (trigger) to spawn. A happy clam usually wont just do it, unless it has pheromonal cues from a number of other clams, and taht usually doesnt work. In general, clam spawning is a sign of system instability.

I see.... well, I wouldn't want my clam to be unhappy.

Clams are expensive... lol... i wouldn't want to shake it around just to make it spawn.

Ya, you're right... maybe some other time when I am more experienced.... It would've been good money though.
