View Full Version : great LFS
oldschool52 04-05-2009, 7:42 AM My wife and I went to Fish Scales, Friday, for the first time. It may not have been the pretiest or most exotic place we've been but the service, knowledge and quality of corals and fish were some of the best we've seen. Prices were great and you get a 20% discount.
Chris and his wife, owners of the business, are the best people I've encountered. Yes, they will sell you what you want but will also make sure that you are purchasing the right things for your particular setup. Even though I've been doing the saltwater thing, on & off for over 35 years Chris explained a few things that were new to me. He and his wife take the time to make sure you understand what you are purchasing and how to take care of it.
One of Chris's last comments before we left were, "I just want to make sure you guys are happy". We were happy then and still are with the items we bought. Got a cool red tube worm, large feather duster, Nuke Green Palys (about 30 heads on rock), a rock with some yellow palys and my favorite purchase a Psyc Mandarin (about 2 1/2 inches). All the critters are doing great in the tank and look great too. I've wanted this type of mandarin for a long time. He was eating pods within 30 minutes into the tank. 24 hours later he went exploring through the whole tank ignoring any of the other fish who came near him. He, and we are pretty sure it is a male, is my favorite fish in the tank.
To conclude this post, if you haven't gone to Fish Scales you need to. He is one of our sponsers and is always here on the forums to answer questions and help out. Great place to visit and purchase your salt stuff and gather knowledge. (BTW, he has snakes and some other critters too).

I have been to some of the LFS around here,Aviarium,MarineLand,MarineDesigns,FishScales, and petco =P
but none of them have ever treated me the way they do at fishscales, when i go into some of those other LFS i feel like im wasting their time, like they dont want to be bothered by me,like they had better things to do than to help me select some corals and fish,i dont know maybe they did??,but it shouldnt feel like that, every single time i go in their stores..Not pointing any fingers, but when i went into one of the stores that i stated above, although the store was gorgeous, had sooo many nice things that i wanted, and was interested in,they we're not nice to me,they acted as if the questions i was asking them were really annoying them(not by only one person),like they didnt have time for my questions, and wanted to help other customers, and that did not happen on only one occasion, the 2nd as well, which was my last,i bought my regal tang and never returned.Truthfully the ONLY store that i have been to that made me feel absolutly comfortable, not pressured in anyway, completly informed and totally satisfied with my selection and purchase,is and always will be FISH SCALES
they take the time to help me one on one and make sure i am informed of everything by asking me questions about my tank that i wouldnt normally ask.going above and beyond everytime i am there, for instance, yesterday i was there at the store, and it was PACKED with customers!!yet chris still found time to answer all my questions and show me everything that i needed for my tank, while helping other customers with their needs as well, great multitasking it chris! lol...i am very happy with my purchase AND the price!!cant go wrong with an already low price and an additional 20% off!!!! =)
I found my tank away from tank..i mean home =) i hope you find yours at FishScales too!!
kwajtrader 04-05-2009, 10:32 AM I haven’t been to Fish Scales yet, but have been going to as many as possible to see what’s out there since I’m new to the hobby. I’ve experienced the same thing you have at several; they seem uninterested in helping and want to move on to the next sale, but one you didn’t mention and my personal favorite is Creation Reef. It’s a family owned business and Amanda and the entire staff have been amazingly helpful and always take the time to answer all my questions and to make sure I’m doing things right. Their pricing is generally among the lowest I’ve seen. When I was first getting set up I bought a pump there and I literally saw the same item for 2x and almost 3x the price at other stores. For an item at ~$50 I found that really annoying. I pass several other LFSs on my way to Creation Reef, but to me it’s worth the extra time. Another store also not on this list is Einstein Aquatic. I went there for the first time yesterday and was also really pleased with the service from Chris and the cool stock. I was looking for Duncans and was able to get exactly what I wanted at an excellent price.

KR561 04-05-2009, 10:49 AM I will have to check out those other fishstores, just to take a peek =)
where are they located??
FishScales is in FloweryBranch...not far from ChateauElan
I usually go from Hamilton Mill,so say you start at I-85 and HamiltonMill exit,go west(left off 85 coming from ATL) towards the next intersection(there will be a CVS,Chic-fil-a at the intersection)take that RIGHT there at the light, travel a few miles until you reach a 4way stop sign take a RIGHT,travel around 4 miles until you run into another 4way stop sign, make a RIGHT,you will see a liquor store across the street from you with a Sonic to the left of it,FishScales is located in the shopping plaza directly behind them!
kwajtrader 04-05-2009, 11:02 AM Einstein Aquatics is located near I-285 and I-85
3770 Midvale Road Tucker, GA.30084. I was surprised to find that this is a house in a residential neighborhood and the “store” is located around back in the basement. I’m told they recently got relocated from a strip mall.
Creation Reef is near 575 and Hwy 92, about a mile past Home Depot going west on 92. They are not open on Sunday.

Fish Scales2 04-05-2009, 11:12 AM Oldschool, thanks for the kind words, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you and your wife the other day. I love learning from people that have been the hobby for as many years as you.
We do have some wonderful sponsors, but no one has mentioned Keen Reef yet which is my favorite LFS (besides my own) I have been there severaltimes the last couple of weeks and left with fish and coral. I dare you to try to stop by there and leave empty handed.LOL
ramses66 04-05-2009, 11:20 AM How far is Flowery Branch from 285? I've been to Einstein Aquatics and was really impressed.
