So I guess its come to this point where I can start to do a build thread. Im waiting to take delivery on my new tank from Ocea aqaurium products. The website is currently under some construction, and there not letting you view everything. http://www.oceallc.com/ There are a few other members ordering tanks from here and there pretty close if you decide to pick it up yourself.

So the tank I ordered is 180 gallon all glass reef ready tank with dual corner overflows and closed loop returns with bulkheads. 72"x24"x24"..... I mapped out the area in the stand to make sure everything would fit. I have always had this problem with never enough room in the stand for everything I have or plan on getting.

So I decided to make the Ultimate stand 75"x27"x40" this should be able to house a small army LOL. Hopefully there will be a frag tank underneath with the sump and everything else. Plus no more bending over to check out the tank this was the entire purpose for the tall stand. Im going to add some pictures of the process.

I finished the frame of the stand today and am waiting for a second run to HD for some more supplies. Hopefully I'll have all the sides and trim on in the next week or so here as soon as I get some more time. Just look how massive this stand is. I used some ideas from other members and there beautiful stands WOW hopefully mine will be just as nice.

Soon I will put on a supply list of what I all have and what im going to upgrade soon as the tank is all done. and some more pics.

Lookin' good. Not you, the stand. BTW that tri-color valida I got from you is doing great. I thought I killed it at first, now it's growing like a weed and has changed colors. Oh I've looked at ocea. How's their pricing fair?

The tri color is a great sps coral with alot of nice color mine grows very quick. There pricing is pretty on compaired to everyone else. I could have bought a tank from a local LFS but the thought of having a custom tank that gets delivered in a crate compaired to a tank thats been in someones showroom for god knows how long....

I've looked at their website a couple times. Good looking tanks. I know glasscages has good pricing but quality is questionable. I may look into them for a tank. No one seems to make what I want. Can't wait to see you get it up and running. If ya need any help holler at me.

I tried looking at a few oceanics on craigslist, but no one had time for me to come look at their stuff, I got impatient.....wanted to buy a tank before the wife changed her mind. I think I need to rebuild a stand though. I don't have room for anything in mine. Hope everything goes well with your build!!

Seems to be a great place to order a tank even thow you have to wait a few weeks for the completion of the tank. This is only the second stand I have ever built, but should be easy after the 1st one.

:D1st off I have to say Wednesday the 8th is when Im taking delivery. The stand is going really well considering Im not a builder and this is only my second try. But there where some great build threads where I found some ideas that I combined into one stand. Hopefully it works well.

The doors Hmmmmmm Im still working on that I think Im gonna do 2 doors with trim..... I left the back open for air flow becuase on the stand I built for the cube when I totally sealed if off and put on the door, it gets so warm and damp inside. I mean I calked and sealed it to death with two coats of killz.

So I left this one open a little over half way... This should leave me room for some air flow. And let me tell you this thing is HEAVY AS HELL!!!!!!!! Im gonna need an army or wait maybe just jeremy hes a beast LOL........ In the end I think it will be painted and stained kind of a modern look to it...

Instead of ordering, just stop by saltwaterfish and nab something up. Better yet, get a distributor as a buddy or some dock connection. That is gonna be sweet. Everything comes into LAX or MIAMI

There where a few build threads on reef central and here. I kinda worked off Family reefers build. It was all about doing the trim, thats where I was stuck. I ended up redoing some of the top trim just because I knew it would look better. I will post some more pics in the morning....

Ok so I decided to redo the trim on the top of the tank after talking with my wife and 2 more runs to HD. So the trim work is pretty much completed with the exceptions to thr doors which Im working on as we speak. The plywood on the top of the stand is not the piece that is going to be used.. I have a new piece that fits from each outer corner of the pillars..... I am also going to be doing a little finishing trims around the tank once its in place to hide the plastic.. Paint and stain tomorrow hopefully. The tank comes wednesday.

I also got 2 new toys for the tank. First I have to say thanks to Jeremy for the Tunze 6100. It was having a problem with the driver. So I opened it up and there was some saltwater dried up on the computer board which lead to some corosion. After some cleaning and a few taps with the soldering iron walla it works again yay..... I also got a new 8 switch power panel. Everyone has the black one with the red lights but, I really liked this one with the two tone and the blue lights.

Yup should be nice. Going to pick out some paint and stain tomorrow. Kinda modern look to it we'll see were it takes us. After building the stand man the canopy is gonna be a little bit of work... And after a half lb of wood filler anything can look nice. Oh ya by the way its about 500lbs roughly.

WILLIAM1
04-08-2009, 1:25 AM
Ok here are the updated pictures of the stand the doors are in progress. Theres still some trim work that has to be done on the top but I have to wait for the tank. Hopefully Ill get the doors finished tomorrow.

I had a little helper you get what you pay for :) he was pretty cheap... I was always kinda of a builder, I mean I fildled around with some wood working equipment before. So I dont think it came out to bad it just weighs a TON.....

The project came out about $300 less than what I could have paid for a new one. I think I might still have enough wood to build the top minus some trim and a piano hing. I still have some small spots to touch up but I like it... So no more delay on to the pics....

I just got another addition to the build.... Its a 53 gallon tank Im gonna use for the new sump/refugium. 36x19x18 it seems to be a perfect fit. This is going to be split into three sections on the left side refugium, middle return and the right side the skimmer. I really didnt want anything to shallow in case there was a problem and it needed to hold some extra water. Plus the stand is sealed and 4" deep so theres room there for water as well. Just in case... Here are a few pics of the new sump tank in the stand.

Nice Job on the stand !!!

Thanks it never seems as if it will be finished... Just trying to square a few things out before the tank comes wednesday. Sump, skimmer, power panel, ect...... I think I want to drill a hole in the sump just in case I decide to put in a larger pump (DART) or something later down the road with out having to tear the sump out and drill it then.

use masking tape and an curved edge to get nice looking silicone beeds. just lay the tape about a 1/4" or how ever wide you want it, and then silicone. when the silicone has slightly started to dry, gently peel the tape away.

That was really important for me to have a larger stand than normal. I have a bad back and this will help keep some strain off it not having to bend over all the time except to go in the stand.

Plus you never know what you will add in the future:)

I guess the only problem I see with the tank is the return pipe that comes from the overflow. If I were to keep the glass tops on the tank that TY gave me the return has to go over the top of the overflow. Theres no place for the return to come threw level with the overflow. It has to go over the top of it. Ill post some pics soon.

Cool built,

can't wait to haul my new aquisition in tomorrow and start a build thread of my own.

Love the wood work!

Your new tank is gonna be awsome, but its almost overwhelming with all the stuff that needs to be done in order to put some water in it.

Thanks the woodwork came out ok for a first timer. Im happy with it and thats whats matters....

I have started to dry fit all the plumbing in the tank today and got the gurgle busters made and installed. My gurgles busters came out pretty nice I think there a little different than the ones in the DIY link I have where the outside of the gurgle buster slides up and down. My center piece were the airtube comes out slides up and down. But it looks different too. I'll be posting some more pics of those tonight.

I also did the plumbing for the skimmer which was a bit more of a challenge for me. I was having a problem cleaning the becketts, when you have to twist the tops off and take out the beckett. The piping going to that piece had to be disconnected before you could twist the tops off. Well its a pain in the butt to keep removing the two metal hose clamps. So I just decided to do something a little bit different and easier to use. I will also post some pics of that two.

I am checking pricing on some local glass companies to get it done for me, and since we decided to move this year - the 330 won't happen any time soon. But I will start collecting the basics.

Now BACK to this awesome tank that is far more 'real' than mine.

William, you probably already know this but when you dry fit, or at least when I do, the pieces don't go in as far as they do with glue on them so if you have tight tolerances that could end up being a problem to think about. Also is that a one way valve in the center of the picture? If so what are you expecting it to do for you and since it will eventually need cleaning do you have a shutoff that will allow you to take it out with out too much of a mess?

This is going to be an awesome set up and I look forward to seeing it someday.

Very nice man. I have been following this build from the beggining till its finished!!

Thanks legal reefer!! It never feels like its gonna be finished.

Just in case anyone was wondering why I painted the center baffle on the sump black. Its becuase when I put my light over the refugium everything it shines on grows corillan algea on it even some other types of algea. After a while you cant see though anything. So hopefully this will keep some of the light off other parts of the equipment.

William, you probably already know this but when you dry fit, or at least when I do, the pieces don't go in as far as they do with glue on them so if you have tight tolerances that could end up being a problem........................................... .......

I came across this problem already earlier in the build. After everything was cut. So I used some black krylon and spray painted over the joints so when there glued I know how far they will have to fit in

Also is that a one way valve in the center of the picture? If so what are you expecting it to do for you and since it will eventually need cleaning do you have a shutoff that will allow you to take it out with out too much of a mess????????????????????????????

The check valve is going to go right after the pump in the sump, but not submerged I can unscrew it after I shut off the ball valve theat will be above it. Any acces water will go into the sump. That way there will be no ore wet towels as Im trying to clean it somewhere else inder the stand.

This is going to be an awesome set up and I look forward to seeing it someday. Thanks.

Just from looking at the pics, you may want to lower the gurgle buster 1/2" to 1" so the level remains below the edge of the overflows and keeps the "surface skimming" function of the overflows.

And for someone who doesnt have a sump (canister at the moment), your photo library of parts is going to help tons. Great job on the build and the thread.

Thanks man its been a long build already and Im hoping to finish it... The sump that was in the 90 gallon was an easy build I just added a couple baffles and some bulkheads but thanks again. When I get it set up I would love to have you stop by.

Saw the tank today; it's gonna be very nice (well, really it's very nice now). And Will is a great host. Thanks for the coral, and I'm glad I bought the other colony. The colors really look good under my T5s.
The stand is awesome... I've been jealously planning on how to build one for myself. The amount of room in it makes me REALLY motivated.

So who is the next lucky fish you plan on putting in that tank? Looks awesome.

WILLIAM1
04-28-2009, 3:59 PM
The next lucky fish going into the new tank is probably going to be a few of anthias and a sohal tang.

I dont think Im gonna add much more rock. I have been fighting high nitrates in the other tanks becuase I dont think Im getting enough flow behind and underneather the rock. So were going to try this for a while and let the sps grow off the formations.

Should have plenty of room to swim with your scape

Ya thats what I was thinking adding it last to the tank. I dont plan on having a huge array of fish but some color and beauty should be fine. Theres plenty of room theres only about 100lbs of LR in there.

Smoothie
04-29-2009, 1:13 AM
Watcha thinkin about adding?

WILLIAM1
04-29-2009, 1:32 AM
Probably

4 female lyretail anthias and 1 male...
4 green chromis
1 ora black clown
1 chevron tang
1 clown tang
1 sohal tang
1 blonde naso tang

these are just a couple ideas, Im not to sure about all the tangs but we will see what happens. Im in no rush..

WILLIAM1
04-29-2009, 1:35 AM
I really want to start collecting Millies since there my favorite SPS. and some chalices. I would really like to see the sps grow up and out from the pillars of rock but we'll see.

Smoothie
04-29-2009, 1:43 AM
I had a clown for 2 years til the dreaded crash of late 08. Model citizen unless the powder blue flexed on him and then he went blackout crazy until things were cool again. Hated my mag float. I would choose between him or the sohal but not both. Get one of the same family maybe but with a different shape and size. Either way making it last is smart.
Anthias idea is sweet. Don't forget about the wrasses, but you can add them anytime. Your scape will look nice with some mili's jumping off of them

WILLIAM1
04-29-2009, 1:50 AM
Ya the anthias will add alot of color to the tank. Hopefully I can get it balanced out some more with the colors. But for now its all about tuning the skimmer, getting the CR hooked up, ozone pluged in, and all the minor stuff.

Smoothie
04-29-2009, 1:54 AM

04-29-2009, 1:58 AM
Yeah, I'm planning on running ozone eventually. Curious to know your impressions.

WILLIAM1
04-29-2009, 2:02 AM
I was running it on the 90 gallon for about 4 months. There was a significant difference in the clarity of the water, also the was less algea build up on the glass. I inject it into the skimmer, and its simple. Its like having the UV on the tank I just think its better. Just remember the ozone has to be released threw carbon..

Smoothie
04-29-2009, 2:04 AM
You're reeling me in. Would dig on some pics of setting it up if you get time in the next week or so

weaglereefer
04-29-2009, 2:08 AM
Yeah, I'm waiting to move tanks and I'll set it up with a bigger better skimmer, then I plan to run the ozone through my old Coralife Super Skimmer 125 and just keep the water level low. This should keep plenty of ozone running through the setup. I was planning to block off the vent in the lid and drill a few holes in the collection cup and fill the cup with carbon so all the gas has to exit through carbon filtration.

Smoothie
04-29-2009, 2:09 AM
Also what ozone equipment?

WILLIAM1
04-29-2009, 2:09 AM
I have a collection cup with the carbon holer for the release of the ozone. Its so simple all you need is the ozone box, dryer and nice air pump. Heres the one I have http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4570

The only thing I added was a new midas blenny. I have some more livestock in mind but Im patient. Really want to keep an eye on all the parameters and temp for a while just to make sure everythings going great before adding any really cool stuff. I am going to be adding a new bubblegum mille and a blue slimer. Im taking one of the rock formations and doing all millies on it. One big colony just inner twining. Added a phosban with carbon....

I have been working out my lighting situation the last couple weeks so hopefully Ill get started on that soon here. But until then heres a couple pics nothing real special.
