View Full Version : Burned by the snow

Well, it looks like our location was at the center of the snow mess. We had about 10 inches of snow, lots of downed trees and no power for about 36 hours. Backup dies after about 3 hours. The alternative was a 3k watt inverter hooked to a 1986 Volvo for the rest of the time. It kept water circulating and air pumps running but was inadequate for heating the systems. Water temperatures eventually fell to about 62 F. Reef system is in the living room with the parlor stove so it stayed warmer and appears OK.

Bad news is that I lost 1500 - 2000 fish in growout. Anything less than 6 weeks and some older fish. I lost several batches of blennies, including some post set flametails. Looks like I can clean those tanks and start fresh. I am guessing that the broodstock will be shut down for a while as well.

Lesson is, test that generator with a load BEFORE you have to rely on it.

Now I am really looking for eggs to rebuild my growout.

wow John! Hearing this makes me ill. If I had anything producing eggs I would make sure you got them.

John,
So sorry man! That is a terrible thing to happen. Now you got me worrying. I can help you out with some of the Tail Spot Blenny eggs if you are in this area. I have some Ocellaris that are producing regularly as well. you are welcome to some of those too.

You should have made a call out for help. I have a large gas powered generator. it could have ran all of your heaters.

Thanks!
I will keep you in mind if this happens again.
I plan to get a decent generator the next time. Any suggestions? Going Chinese in not a good thing when your livelihood depends on the product!

Jeremy, the ozone generator helped clean up the water in about 3 hours. All systems!

FishScales, you have a PM.

Bob, thanks, you have a PM.

All else, thanks for the kind words.

John, I am so sorry about all those fish.
Would thermal blankets(silver things) help keep the heat in, if another storm were to hit?
