View Full Version : New pics of juvenile clowns and cardinals
I took a few new pictures of the clownfish and the cardinals today and thought I would share them with you guys! The clownfish hatched on 2/1 and the cardinalfish are from the 2/9 brood. So far they are all doing great.
Enjoy!

twistoflime 02-22-2009, 5:29 PM That's so cool!!!!! LMK when you start selling the cardinals, I'll totaly buy two to put in the big tank.

Yep! The pair in my 210 are laying eggs regularly now. I used the larval trap to catch these and out of the 25 or so I snagged, i have about 20 left. Not too bad.

Derek_S 02-22-2009, 8:34 PM Wow, those clowns have grown substanitally. I bet that is amazing. When I was there I could barely see them.
thedeper 02-22-2009, 8:44 PM So do you ever have any oddball clowns out of your batches? Didn't know if you have ever ran across a Picasso type. That would be sweet.
Or are they false percs?
Wow, those clowns have grown substanitally. I bet that is amazing. When I was there I could barely see them.
They have grown a lot! They are still tiny but now they look like mini clownfish (as evident by the dime in the pic!). It is interesting to watch them because even at this size/age they are still territorrial and chase each other, very unlike the cardinals that are more mellow that californians... hey dude you got any live brine?? no? ok, we'll just hang in this urchin and chill :D
stacy22 02-22-2009, 8:54 PM Bob, I always enjoy pictures of your kids. :)
Budsreef 02-22-2009, 9:02 PM Sweet!!!!!!
daniellin 02-22-2009, 11:45 PM what do you feed the clowns ? Live rotifers ?
what do you feed the clowns ? Live rotifers ?
Yes. Started them off with live rotifers in green water and then graduated them to NHBS about 9 days. Now they get mostly NHBS, still some rotifers and I started giving them powdered food at about 15 days.
Son of Adam 02-22-2009, 11:59 PM Very cool. You got skillz
Steve 02-23-2009, 12:04 AM I wanna come see the set-up again soon.
savingnemo754 02-23-2009, 12:05 AM Those are some of the smallest fish I have ever seen. I would love to get a couple of the clowns and cardinals when you get some available LMN.

Thanks man! Mostly luck though.

Anytime!

daniellin 02-23-2009, 12:32 AM Very impressive. Thanks.
Affectedhalf 02-23-2009, 12:36 AM Wow, good job! Keep doing what you're doing  The more fish we're able to breed in captivity, the better for our wild stock.
fishgardener 03-01-2009, 11:19 PM The dime in the photo really shows how tiny they are. I so enjoy seeing these little ones grow up. You are doing an amazing job!:yay:

atreyu917 03-01-2009, 11:45 PM Oh I love seeing your babies! I wasn't aware you already had clown babies!
My mom wants the false percs, but I want a true perc pair. But if it comes to me getting the false....well then, I might have to harass you for some of those as well. :)
I can't wait till those Fire Clowns started brooding!
atreyu917 03-01-2009, 11:46 PM What else is on your list of trying to breed again? I know I've read them somewhere. Orchid dottybacks right?

Right now I'm going to try and raise some of the Tail Spot Blennies. I may try some more of the Threadfin and Pajama Cardinals too since they are conitunally spawning and I can collect the larva fairly easilt.
The orchids are not spawning yet but they are paired up so I am hoping they will start soon.
My Yasha Gobies are laying eggs too but I have no way of knowing when since they lay in the burrow. If I catch any larva it would be dumb luck.
Unfortunately, I lost the last pair of Neon Gobies. I need to figure out why they did not make it, I think they may have just been too stressed out when the sump went down.
So, hopefully I can keep some of these alive and grow them out!
atreyu917 03-02-2009, 12:16 AM Your Yasha gobies are?! ahhhh I love those guys. They are on my current stocklist. haha.

BaboonScience 03-04-2009, 1:35 AM Bob
Have you tried co-culturing the Bangii and same size clowns. The Bangii seem to learn to eat frozen and pellet foods by the clown example.
John
I'll probably combine these two batches in to a larger tank in another week or two, once I finish the plumbing changes I need to do. Right now the clowns are about a month old and the cardinals are about 3 weeks.
Chibils 03-04-2009, 11:05 PM I expect samples of the banggais and threadfins to test your stock for any defects. :D
Just a quick update:
Luckily, all 17 of the last batch of Bangaii Cardinals that were born on 2/9 are still doing great. Almost a month old now. The male in my 70G is holding again and I moved the adult pair to my 210G and it looks like they may have spawned again.
My Ocellaris Clowns are all doing well too, this batch hatched on 2/1 and it looks like I have about 18 or 19 that have made it to this point, alittle over 30 days old. The pair in my 210 have layed eggs this week so I'll try and get some of those and start another batch.
My Tail Spot Blenny continue to spawn but I have not tried raising any again since I had to rework the plumbing in the fish room. I'll be giving the current batch of eggs to John (Baboon Science) to try and raise to help him out after his loss. Hopefully he can get them to adults.
The Orchid Dottybacks seemed to have paired up but still no eggs. Hopefully soon!

Thanks! Now that I have the sump swapped out, I can work on the rest of the setup and get some grow out space.
BZ
stickx911 03-07-2009, 8:03 PM no defects that I could tell. That was a real nice setup.
My little guys are doing well. They only accept the frozen food, but I'll get them to eat a variety in time I'm sure.
thanks again

Thank you.

blu_devl_06 03-20-2009, 11:41 PM Guys, this is truely awesome. Hopefully someday I will be able to hone my skills and breed to fish to share with the world! Really good pics!

They are doing great! I combined the clownfish and the cardinals together and they are doing fine. I will try and get more pics tomorrow and post them.

Ok, so you have been asking for it and now here they are!
An assortment of pictures of the kids. The oldest batch is now 3+ months old, the middle batch of cards and clowns are about 52 day old and the smallest ones are about 15 days old. I have a total of 18 clowns and 46 Cardinals between the three tanks.
Enjoy!
glxtrix 03-25-2009, 5:21 PM All too cool.

Soarin' 03-25-2009, 6:09 PM Wow -- those look great -- makes me want to start growing some, but I know it must be an incredible pain to raise them this far!

You are correct, sir! It is indeed the FSM. :D
stacy22 03-25-2009, 6:49 PM Bob, did you get those striped cardinals from Tim?

LorenK 03-25-2009, 7:45 PM Bob, I'd like dibs on the clown hanging out in the closeup of the PVC. He looks like he'll host.
Thanks ;-)

Watch it! This is G rated thread!
Stacy,
I went to check out the cardinals at Tim's the other day. He has some beautiful cards unfotunately they were the Red-striped or Checkered Cardinalfish and not exactly what I was looking for but they would look great in your 150!
BZ
atreyu917 03-25-2009, 10:34 PM I think along with cards, I'm gonna have to buy a pair of clowns from you too in the near future.
LilRobb 03-26-2009, 12:19 AM question for the master;
why do you rarely see or hear about one breeding the black clowns?
Is it that much harder?
Robb

Obviously this question was directed towards Baboon Science! I am guessing that there aren't many breeding pairs out there right now since they are relatively new additions to the hobby. I don't know how difficult they are to get to spawn. John may have a better explanation.
I'll take some cardinals! Maybe a pair! Lemme get back to you!
Bolded 03-30-2009, 9:12 PM Those are so cool looking!!!
NotiReef 04-01-2009, 5:16 PM Loving the pics Bob...they are looking awesome :)
Loving the pics Bob...they are looking awesome :)
Thanks Noti! If things go right tonight, I should have another batch in the morning! I tried to collect last night but only a few hatched. I think I have 4 larva in the rearing tank today. Hopefully I'll have a lot more tonight. They look ready to hatch.
BZ
Have you thought about changing your signature to fish brothel supervisor?
Adisport 04-03-2009, 12:46 AM I would really like to get a pair of your cardinals. Congratz.
Have you thought about changing your signature to fish brothel supervisor?
Hehehe, good idea.
Unfortunately, I think the adult Bangaii and Pajama Cardinalfish got most of the larva last night. I'll have to pull the eggs next time before they hatch now that the cardinals are patrolling the tank at night.
I would really like to get a pair of your cardinals. Congratz.
the juveniles take about 6 months to grow to a size where they can compete in a community setting. Check back with me in a couple of months!
BOB
atreyu917 04-03-2009, 9:24 PM Do the clowns have to be 6 months?
If so, put me down for 2 clowns and 2 cardinals. Seriously, this time! Tank gets set up 9am this Sunday, so I'll be in the market for fish in about 2 months! I can't wait to get some of your guys. They're just precious.

atreyu917 04-03-2009, 9:55 PM As long as I never plan to hatch their babies, would it matter keeping siblings together??
Probably a dumb question! haha
nope... you can even raise them if you want! Nature does not mind.
atreyu917 04-03-2009, 10:10 PM Really?? So do they not really inbreed like dogs/cats do and cause issues?
I'm so excited about these fish from you. haha.
The gene pool does not need as much variety in fish as humans and other vertebrates :D
I think they would be fine.
atreyu917 04-03-2009, 10:24 PM haha maybe that'll be a future endeavor then!
Last night, my younger pair released another 22 babies! The male is recuperating in his man cave now, and the youngins are happily scarfing down NHBS in their luxury apt complete with fake urchin. pics to come.
atreyu917 04-28-2009, 6:30 PM hahah man cave! I lol'ed.
So Bob, you gonna have some ready for me in like...a month and 1/2? :) same with the cardinals
atreyu917 04-28-2009, 6:31 PM BTW, can't wait to see pictures!
Amberjack 04-28-2009, 6:55 PM Bob, you're to cool!

Adisport 05-01-2009, 1:39 AM Hey bobz,
Do you have pair of Banggai Cardinals left? If so, how much and can I get them in a couple weeks? Would love to see some pics. Thx.

atreyu917 05-01-2009, 11:52 PM Wow, they're beautiful. I can't wait to have one of Bobz's Bangai's and clowns. They are just simply amazing and adorable.
Zesty 05-02-2009, 12:47 AM Congratulations Dad! They are very KEWL! You must be very proud!
mysterybox 05-02-2009, 8:07 AM awesome!

twistoflime 05-03-2009, 12:15 AM So when will the clownfish be ready for new homes?:D Once I move my pair of clowns from my bedroom tank to the big tank I'm gonna be lonely.
fraggel rock 05-03-2009, 12:19 AM I miss my cardinals, they were so cool the way they just floated around together.
Smoothie 05-03-2009, 12:33 AM That is awesome! Saw someone make a fake nem for their cardinals with puddy and zip ties. Still love the toothpics
Not to be outdone by the younger male, my "retired" adult male decided to have another brood tonight! Not sure how many he is popping out but atleast a dozen or more so far... way cool (again)!
BZ
atreyu917 05-03-2009, 10:08 PM awww wow. He hasn't lost his drive quite yet apparently. haha.
awww wow. He hasn't lost his drive quite yet apparently. haha.
More likely HER drive! I think he would have been very happy to continue eating and swimming around the 210!
atreyu917 05-03-2009, 10:12 PM haha typical male w/the eating. I can't believe how much she has been willing to produce. how many broods has she had?!
tokejr 05-12-2009, 12:33 AM Wow, those are some full NHBS bellies on the cardinals!
Great babies.
atreyu917 05-27-2009, 4:41 PM My pair from you :) They're doing great. Little pigs thats for sure.
That's awesome! Really nice little fry. They look exactly like the adult versions, like shrunken cardinals and shrunken clownfish!
My pair from you :) They're doing great. Little pigs thats for sure.
Awe!!! I miss them already! But atleast I know they are in a good home!

atreyu917 05-27-2009, 6:35 PM haha they are by FAR everyone's favorite.
They play chase and will head butt each other on occasion when they make too sudden of movements towards each other haha.
They seem to be "housing" the overflow. They'll venture, but always come back to it. I'm hoping they'll notice the frogspawn and maybe jump in there eventually!
glxtrix 05-27-2009, 6:50 PM Too cute!

Yep, they like PVC too. At night all 30 of them will huddle together in the PVC pieces in the grow out tank.
Rbredding 06-21-2009, 10:55 PM clowns and cardinals are two on my list of "gets"...
when my setup is ready, I hope you have more..
