i have a 30 gallon tank and i got a snowflake eel for a present. we saw him for about 3 days then he vanished. we looked everywhere and he was gone. i read on the internet that they can escape easily, but we have a secure tank and he is not hiding anywhere, as far as we can tell. We don't think he crawled out because we did not find a dead eel anywhere.

Any ideas as to what could have happened? By the way, he lives with three damsels.

Thanks

Did you check within 20-30 feet of the tank under everything?

In the overflow/sump? Those thing are super good at getting into the smallest area

Stuck in the drain pipe at say a ball valve????

And from what I have heard they will slither when out so look further than just around the tank.

Do you have any honeycombing at all in the live rock? I've actually picked up a piece of live rock before, examined it, then put it back down on the sandbed without seeing my dwarf moray eel anywhere. Then I've seen him emerge from the rock. It's amazing what they can get into.

LOL!!, Had it happen, covered in dust bunnies and it lived. Did you check within 20-30 feet of the tank under everything?

Do you have another pets in the house (cats, dogs, etc)? They could take the eel if the eel was on the floor around the tank.

He must have been out for hours, all black and dried out....recovered in about an hour!

I hope you can find him. I have the same concern as William above. If you have indoor pets like cat(s) or dog(s), they may have carried him off if he got out.

What does your set-up look like? I mean, do you have a cabinet? A sump? An overflow? How much live rock? And does the LR have enough holes that the eel may have climbed into a hole in the LR? How big is the eel? Have you tried removing the LR? Take a towel or something and just put down on the floor in front of the tank, and just lift out all the rock quickly, look in any that might have holes, and then quickly put it back in there. At least you'd have some peace of mind that he's not in there somewhere. If you have a sump, check that too. Unfortunately with eels, you'll also need to check any actual drain lines (line to any skimmer, canister filter, overflow drain line) because they love to get into tight places like that.

Good luck to you.
