View Full Version : Johnr's 120
johnr2604 12-22-2008, 11:32 PM I am going to be putting this build together over the next few weeks. I am starting a thread so I get peoples opinion on parts of it. ordered a 120 48x24x24 with dual overflows that should be here tomorrow. My plans are to set up the 120 with a 22 gallon frag tank plumbed into it. They will have matching stands. Anyway I have alot of stuff and will be looking for some more.
As for equipment I plan on using the sump I have on my 40b thats just under 40g. For lighting I am looking for another 250w PFO HQI pendant or something similar. This would give me 2x250 plus 2x39w T-5ho actinics. As for skimmers, I have a coralife 125 and MRC oceanforce 100. I'm not sure either is large enough so I will probably be looking to do some trading to get one thats more appropriate to the size. I have also tossed around the idea of running both of them. i plan on using a mag 12 for a return. For flow I am probably going to go with 3 or 4 modded maxijets.
On the frag tank I am going to be running a mag 5 and a 175 watt se with a ushio 14k and ARO ballast. I already have all this laying around so it cuts down on the cost. I will throw some K-2s in for flow. It will be plumbed in to the bigger system and the stand will have shelves for storage.
I will get some pics up because I am starting the stand tomorrow, and hopefully going to get the tank.
Amberjack 12-22-2008, 11:57 PM Let's get this thing started !!:yay:  :yay:
johnr2604 12-23-2008, 6:57 PM And so it begins !!! Big thanks to Sal at Saltwater City for getting this so quick.

Steve 12-24-2008, 12:54 AM You probably should, just leave it in the protective cardboard and set it out by the street tomorrow night. Santa will surely come for someone!

Barbara 12-26-2008, 9:03 PM Sweetness! You can't overbuild a stand John. Make it sturdy; you won't be sorry.
Good to see you're making it without a center brace. Those center braces are a PITA.
johnr2604 12-26-2008, 9:07 PM Sweetness! You can't overbuild a stand John. Make it sturdy; you won't be sorry.
Good to see you're making it without a center brace. Those center braces are a PITA.Yeah, I chose to do the top in 2x6 because I didn't want the center brace.
johnr2604 12-26-2008, 11:25 PM Got the sheeting on and most of the trim done. I still need to put the floor in and build the doors. There are also a couple of pieces of trim I have to put on the corners . I plan on painting it black. I will be building a canopy for it next.

johnr2604 12-26-2008, 11:45 PM Looking good John, what skimmer are you planning to use, and is this going to be mixed reef?

johnr2604 01-03-2009, 12:35 AM WOW your going high tech! which version did you get. I'm looking into getting to new reefkeeper LightIts the original. I dont have a reactor so I really just wanted to make use of the timer, Temp, and powerhead options. Plus I couldn't beat the price. If I do get a reactor in the future I will upgrade.
Mockery 01-03-2009, 1:33 AM Yeah i'm think with the mid grade light i could monitor the ca reactor ph tank temp and lights but idk still to be determined
johnr2604 01-03-2009, 3:49 PM Well, I got all my electrical mounted in the stand and my lights installed. I also got my sump set in place. I mounted the reefkeeper controller on the side of the stand so it would be easy to access and put in feed mode.

Mockery 01-07-2009, 11:41 PM What powerheads did you go with?
johnr2604 01-07-2009, 11:46 PM I ordered two MJ1200s with the sure flow mods and mag holders. I am also throwing my 2= K2's and 2=K1's in there. That should be around 6000gph flow.
Mockery 01-07-2009, 11:52 PM That will be nice, if you have the room those MJ mods are great!

johnr2604 01-11-2009, 8:50 PM I finally got all my other rock moved over. My other phoenix 14k also came in. We started moving some of the corals over also but they are sitting on racks untill I'm sure that the anemone stays put. Between the rock out of my other two tanks and the rock I bought I have right at 120lbs in there.

WILLIAM1 01-17-2009, 10:55 PM Nice SPEEDY build there. Looks super that stand and canopy look really nice. I have a 90 right now thats 48x19x24deep but the extra 5" would be great for depth. Cant wait to see some more pics.
John I have to say that you do beautiful work. I've seen your other builds and I am amazed with your skills. I love your cube setup and it has inspired me to do a cube. Just wish I could build stands like you do.

weaglereefer 01-21-2009, 9:30 PM I absolutely love the Powder Browns. And good luck seeing the shrimp/goby again, lol.
johnr2604 01-21-2009, 9:31 PM Thanks guys. I will get some pics of the goby/pistol pair when they find eachother again. The pistol is already going to town digging a burrow. My wife Melissa is the one that picked out the powder brown. I was skeptical after doing some reading about the difficulty of getting them on prepaired foods. She ate flake at the store and Rods shortly after getting introduced into my tank. Its truely a beautiful fish.
DrNecropolis 01-21-2009, 9:51 PM Nice!!!! Looks great man, I got to get over soon and see it in person
mikesommers 01-22-2009, 11:25 PM Looks great! Love the Tang. You will really enjoy him. Despite the problem my PBT had he is doing great. They are pigs!!!!! Mine is about 4" and almost 1/2" thick. He eats all day. Same with the Blonde. It will take a week or two to get a good diet and feeding times down. Once he decides hes home he will even clean your dinner plate:up: .
jcusmarine 01-24-2009, 12:29 AM Nice build. Looks great.
James S. 01-24-2009, 12:55 AM Love the Powder Brown!!! It is on my list of must haves for my tank. Tank is looking good John!!!!
johnr2604 01-25-2009, 9:03 PM Got my new skimmer in yesterday. Its the Reef octopus DNW-150 I will be plumbing it in tonight.

DrNecropolis 01-25-2009, 9:16 PM Got the right sized tubing? :)
Mockery 01-25-2009, 9:17 PM Beautiful! I picked up my DNW-110 i can't wait to get it going
johnr2604 01-25-2009, 9:19 PM Got the right sized tubing? :)LOL, I went and grabbed it today.
johnr2604 01-25-2009, 9:20 PM Beautiful! I picked up my DNW-110 i can't wait to get it goingThanks, You should be happy. I have heard great reviews about these, I'm excited to find out.
johnr2604 01-27-2009, 1:46 AM Since I got the skimmer installed and the doors on the stand, I figured it was time to get started on the frag tank. I built the stand today. It will match the stand on the 120. I am also building a hood of sorts to house the light but it wont sit on the tank. The plan is to install adjustable shelf brackets on the wall and suspend it from them. I saw this on someone elses build and figured it would work perfect for aclimating new corals to the light. I'm going to run a 175 ushio 14k.
All this will be plumbed into the big tank. The stand is going to hold about 12 gallons of top off water for the system in a rubbermaid. This should buy me a little over a week on topoffs. I picked up the autotopoff.com ATO with two float switches.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e395/jetskiking/othercard934.jpg
im assuming you wont drill the side of your display so how are you going to connect the two.. from underneath??
everything looks great
Ace of Spades 01-27-2009, 1:52 AM Good call on the ATO, those look nice. I've been eyeing their setups for a while. I want a review after you get it installed.
johnr2604 01-27-2009, 1:57 AM im assuming you wont drill the side of your display so how are you going to connect the two.. from underneath??
everything looks great
The small tank is already drilled with bulkheads. Its gonna be plumbed into the sump with a mag 5 return pump and the overflow will go into the skimmer chamber.
johnr2604 01-27-2009, 2:00 AM Good call on the ATO, those look nice. I've been eyeing their setups for a while. I want a review after you get it installed. Prices were really good and they had two float switches so I figured I would give it a shot. Plus Jhutto had told me about them a while back and said he had good success.
Ace of Spades 01-27-2009, 2:05 AM Yeah they look nice and easy to install. I've got all kinds of relays and what not laying around here to build my own, but those look super nice.
Anyways, back on topic... That frag tank is nice. Man I love that size tank. I think Bud had the first one of those I saw at the Collins Hill Frag Swap. I need to pick me one up.
johnr2604 01-27-2009, 2:10 AM Its the perfect size for what I want 24x18x12. It will help my display not look so cluttered later on and able to grow out some frags.
jhutto 01-27-2009, 7:46 AM the auto top off from autotopoff.com works great. As John says you can buy this already made for only a few dollars more that making it yourself. I have had one on my 90 gallon for several years and no issues and just added to my 40 breeder. I have my water beside the tank and its also on a timer as a fail safe. If you get it, also get the autolifter pump as its a great little pump and make sure you keep the float switch clean so it does not gum up and stick. That is true of all the top off relays.
Joe
johnr2604 01-28-2009, 12:06 AM Made a trip over to Creation Reef today. Melissa fell in love with a Sailfin Tang. I know it will eventually get to big for the tank but since it was a zebrasoma instead of a acanthrus like we already have I let her get it. Plus its small so we should be able to enjoy it for a while. All in all its a pretty cool fish. I really am enjoying the large tank, and being able to get more swimming fish. It adds a new dimension to the tank. I'm letting Melissa pick the fish for it as long as they are reef safe. she seems to have an eye for it:up:
Sorry the pics arn't that great. The actinics were the only thing on and it was hard to get a ballance with the low light.

TriGa22 01-29-2009, 12:46 PM John that sailfin looks great. Your tank seems to be coming along well.
johnr2604 01-29-2009, 12:57 PM Thanks Tyler, Melissa fell in love with it when she saw him at the store. There was a little positioning between it and my powder brown when I first put him in but everything has settled down now.John that sailfin looks great. Your tank seems to be coming along well.
johnr2604 01-30-2009, 1:45 PM Well I havn't gotten much done on the frag tank because I have been sick. I did get the stand done and painted. I should get it plumbed in over the weekend.

I realized I never got a picture with the skimmer installed. Fits in there like it was made for it. So far I'm really pleased with the performance. I am still playing around with feed pumps on it. I have tried both the maxijet 1200 and 900. The 1200 skims a little wet so I may go back to the 900 or lower the T on the return. Right now with the valve open all the way it makes it skim to high up the neck.

DrNecropolis 01-30-2009, 1:47 PM I cant believe that monster fit under there...How much elbow grease did it take to get it under there..
johnr2604 01-30-2009, 1:52 PM I cant believe that monster fit under there...How much elbow grease did it take to get it under there..It was really less of a deal than we thought. It goes right in almost like it was made to fit that sump. Slims like crazy  . It was skimming a little dryer with 900 and the skimmate was alot darker.
mikesommers 01-30-2009, 8:27 PM Lookin GREAT dude:up: . I am so ready to put the 90 back together. Another couple of weeks and its show time!

Acroholic 10-29-2009, 8:26 AM Well, Here is an update. I had a little bryopsis battle a while back. I still need to mount some stuff I moved out of the way to keep it from growing over.
I hate that stuff. Tech M took care of it for me, but now you have to worry about every little frag you put in your tank becasue I have seen it on so many frags, even LE type corals from online vendors. Bryopsis is an absolute plague. Give me Redbugs instead to Bryopsis anytime.
Dave

johnr2604 11-15-2009, 11:19 PM I see a new fish in there!!!:DThere are actually two new fish. The bartletts I got from you LOL. Plus I decided to give a CBB another try. I noticed him eating some frozen food today. Hasn't touched any aptasia but grazes on pods.
blu_devl_06 11-15-2009, 11:20 PM Congrats on getting the CBB to eat....those guys can be boogers sometimes
johnr2604 12-26-2009, 10:09 PM Figured it was time to upgrade. I have been running the RK1 for a while now and its done its job. I just wanted a few of the new features so I picked this up today from Tim. I had been weighing my options on controllers for a couple of months. I don't run calcium reactors but still needed 8 plugs for lighting , Flow and temp functions. I figured the RK lite would probably be my best option. I also purchased another PC4 so I would end up with 8 plugs and kept it under $200. If for some reason I do decide to run a reactor then I can upgrade it without running a seperate PH controller. My old RK1 is going on the frag system I'm building now.
The old beast.

weaglereefer 12-26-2009, 10:17 PM You know, if you're posting pics, you're not installing it fast enough.
If I had known you were thinking about a RKL, I would have stayed a few more minutes to help Tim make the sale, lol. I've had mine since May and love it.

LOL, It was nice meeting you today. I plan on installing once my lights go off for the night. Tim didn't have to do much pitching. I had been eying them for a while. It was more a decision to go with the level 1 and add a pc4 or just get the level 3. I ended up choosing the first option because I don't have plans of adding a reactor.
Mockery 12-26-2009, 10:35 PM Very nice addition John! I'm trying to decide between the apex lite or RK lite level 3. I'm just torn.
johnr2604 12-26-2009, 10:39 PM Very nice addition John! I'm trying to decide between the apex lite or RK lite level 3. I'm just torn. Thanks Colin, I'll let you know what I think of the RK lite.
blu_devl_06 12-27-2009, 12:34 AM John, nice addition. I have been thinking of doing something similar, but not yet ready to make that step$$..Maybe after I get my ATO, and some livestock.....
johnr2604 12-27-2009, 12:44 AM John, nice addition. I have been thinking of doing something similar, but not yet ready to make that step$$..Maybe after I get my ATO, and some livestock.....I decided the way I'm going to get the stuff need for the frag system is to just upgrade everything on my 120. Next is lumenmax elite reflectors and radiums then I will move the PFO's and phoenix DE's downstairs in the fishroom.
blu_devl_06 12-27-2009, 12:48 AM Now that sir, is a great idea!!!:D
johnr2604 12-27-2009, 4:40 PM Well, I got the controller installed now I have to figure out how to work the darn thing.
JeffMuse 12-27-2009, 9:11 PM Well, I got the controller installed now I have to figure out how to work the darn thing.
Very nice addition to your system! I have heard that the reef keepers are awesome controllers... it is certainly on my wish list for 2010 :D
johnr2604 12-29-2009, 3:08 PM Very nice addition to your system! I have heard that the reef keepers are awesome controllers... it is certainly on my wish list for 2010 :DThanks, This little thing has some really cool features. I finally got it installed and programmed. I had to do some firmware updates and there was a learning curve going from the old style RK. I'm really looking forward to the Net module coming out along with the new firmware updates.
On another note my clown wrasse jumped the night before last. I was right there and got him back in. I decided to name him lucky becuase its the second time its happened in a year and I was there both times. Guess I need to screen the back of my canopy. I've been planning on doing it for a long time I've just been procrastinating LOL.
johnr2604 01-02-2010, 4:11 PM Well I played around with the little waterproof camera I got for Christmas. I'm loving this thing. Still gotta tweek the settings but I think it does a good job for a $150 camera.

JeffMuse 03-16-2010, 11:50 PM John,
First off, awesome job on the tank! Second, the pics have looked amazing... you are a really clear zoom on the corals/frags.
I do not mean to get off topic as this is your build thread, but what kind of camera are you using to take these pics?
Jeff
Mockery 03-16-2010, 11:53 PM He uses some sort of waterproof camera. It is pretty nice.

JeffNo problem, feel free to ask whatever you want.
Colin is correct, Its a Fuji waterproof point and shoot. I love it. I can just stick the camera in the tank and get as close as I want.
johnr2604 03-17-2010, 12:16 AM On a side note. The Frag tank is going away this week and frags are getting put in the new system. I also pulled most of the zoas out. They are going in a zoa only setup downstairs. Just trying to get my sandbed cleaned up so I don't have frags everywhere.
Maestro 04-27-2010, 11:11 AM Ok I got it plumbed up. I ended up changing my fuge around and running the return chamber in the center. I then plumbed one overflow into the fuge and one into the skimmer chamber.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e395/jetskiking/othercard830.jpg
I see what you mean now about the center return. I'll keep it mind for next time
