View Full Version : Trying to make lemonade from lemons- picasso clown tragedy

I came home to an aweful feeling. I was unable to find my second picasso clown in my clown tank. Well, after some searching, I found him. dried up on the floor.

So, I am debating to what to do. Here are my two options-

1) Anyone have a Picasso clown for sale or know where I can get one?

2) I would trade my existing picasso for a pair of true percs.

Anyone interested?

Awww Panda! I'm so sorry. Do you know if it was the boy, or the girl that died? They sure were pretty.

I nbelieve it was the male. Sucks eggs. They were just starting to show courting behavior.

I will hope you get lucky and can find another little one or a boy. It won't be long before the new one will pair up. If it were me I wouldn't go for option 2. You seem to like unique fish; I think you should stick with the picassos.

Jeremy that makes me sad. :( I agree with Barbara. Keep the Picasso and get her a mate.

Sorry to hear that-

Keep the lonely one, and find her a lover :)

Man, nothing worse. I always frantically search around the tank when I can't find a fish. Sorry this one turned out bad.

Man, that sucks. If you have a chance to get a replacement, try and choose the smaller one from the new batch, as it will be a male. Your single one will surely be a female if it isn't already one by the time you find new one.

But you probably already knew that. :) Good luck with the search.

Would it be difficult to even find a single? Seems like many stores try to sell them as pairs (presumably for mo money)

Sorry to hear about your loss. I will trade you a pair of nice pair of PNG true percs for your picasso. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Creation Reef in Woodstock had some in this past Saturday. Give Matt a call and see if they are still there.

that sucks! I realize that any fish can jump, but I've never heard of a clown jumping (well, don't remember anyway). This is like the 2nd one from a member in 2 weeks. Glenn just had his paired wrasse jump. Luckily, Santa is getting him another one tomorrow. Maybe we need to rethink this top thing. Find something dark that doesn't look all that bad.
Sorry!

Thansk to all. I have had some wonderful offers from others.

Rev- this was the pair I got from you. It drives me nuts because I had the tank covered for a month after I got them from you. I have no idea why he jumped.

Ralph, ANY fish can jump (except seahorses). That is the sad fact. And we have no idea what makes them jump.

Jeremy, what about turning her into a breeder and trying to mate her with a standard?

if it helps any, breeding 2 picassos is no indication that you will get picasso babies. though Id get another picasso if it were me.

So can you add a single Picasso in with your existing one and they'll get along? I have a single percula clown and would love to get him/her a friend.

in a perfect world, yes.

you dont want to end up with 2 females, i think that is a problem, but almost any fish at a fish store will be a juvenile male. and should have a high likelyhood of getting along.

whether they will pair up and mate... thats harder to say.

Christmas miracle!!! well, it's Christmas, at least. I picked up a pair of small picassos from Tim and Keen Reef. Today, all three (one female, plus two little guys) were all crowded into the BTA. Awwwwww. Happy family once again.

I never updated what I think happened to the first one. The following few days after "the jump", the other fish was all pale, hanging at the surface- very unusual. I had arranged a new home, but when the prosepctive taker learned of the condition, he backed out (understandably). well, later that week, I found a GIANT rogue crab on the rock right beneath the clown. I dont know whether it was stalking them, or what. removed the crab, fish back to normal. Yeah!!!

That sounds like a reasonable explanation. I know that any fish can jump but clowns seem less likely to do so than many others (as you know). I guess if I had a mean a$$ crab hanging out beneath me I would consider jumping too. Glad you found the crab. :) Sounds like things are going well in there for the clowns now. :)

Thanks for sharing your experience with them. :)

Be prepared for one to get "kicked out" when two pair up. I bought 3 because I thought one would surely die (they were my very first SW fish purchases). Well, you know how Murphy's Law works.....all 3 of the little buggers survived! They all 3 shared the nem for a few weeks, but then 2 paired up and they kicked the 3rd one out. Wouldn't let it near the nem. Just be on the lookout. When 2 pair up, you might consider taking pity on the 3rd and finding it a new home.

Yeah, I have enough experience with clkowns to know what happens. There are two options, IMO:

1) Two pair up, and decide #3 has overstay his welcome on earth

or, less likely

2) The smaller of the small two stay a subservient non breeding male, and is tolerated (which happens in natural clown colonies).

I am not so naive to think that #2 is a remote possibility, but I have my fingers crossed.

I will hope your Christmas Miracle continues, and #2 happens. (Ewww, never thought I'd be hoping #2 happens..... ) Ha-ha. A little Christmas Eve humor....
