View Full Version : Bangaii babies have babies!
I was looking at my tank this afternoon and realized that the two Bangaii's that I raised have spawned! I was very surprised since I did not think they had sexually matured enough. The female of this pair was from the first spawn I had from the mature pair in my breeding tank and the male is from the rescued baby from Lindalee (yes, linda, you are a Great grandmother now!) ... I doubt this pair will carry this brood the full time since they are so young but kind of cool to know i have another mated pair and to have a second generation going here. I went back and checked and the female was born on April 26, 2008 and the male I got from Linda on August 4, 2008. So the male is not quite four months old now, and the female is six months old. I'll try and get some pictures later today.:yay: :yay: :yay:

But... are you the male is the one from my tank? I mean, it DID make it from the display into the overflow then to the sump and eventually into the fuge without stopping to ask directions....
FutureInterest 11-30-2008, 7:48 PM Wow. Gratz man. :)

I'm hoping that the adult pair spawns again soon. My male quit holding for the last two attempts. I am really hoping the next time works out better. I moved them back to a tank with some sand and a pair of Orchid DB. They seem much more at ease in this tank so I am hopeful.
aceheart1976 12-01-2008, 8:26 PM awwww, i was hoping for a few babies too.... goodluck on the next try bobz
Skriz 12-02-2008, 12:38 AM good work Bob! THat's awesome
LDYBKR 12-03-2008, 8:46 PM mine released theirs last night and the first went crazy eating them! I'm sorry Bob, I should have had you come and get them sooner.
Too bad! If you find any left in the over flow or sump, let me know!

I am still surprised that the young male Bangaii is still carrying eggs. I expected that this pair was too young to have viable eggs but I guess I was wrong. If I counted correctly, this is about day 17 for the male holding the eggs. If he goes another week, I may try moving him to another tank to see if I can raise this hatch. I moved one of the longspined urchins in to the tank with the pair in the event he releases when I am not watching to give the babies a chance.

Linda Lee 12-17-2008, 6:23 PM Here's hoping!!!
Please keep us posted.
:)
andregarcia_73 12-17-2008, 7:04 PM Thats great Bob! I read an article the other day saying how these fish are highly demanded and there are so few of them! Hope all goes well.

I saw that article by Kieron Dodds also, in TFH. I thought he made some excellent points although I did not agree with everything in the article. I do agree that we should NEVER BUY wild caught Bangaii Cardinals and that all of us should look for Tank raised fish if you want to add them to your reef. He makes an excellent case for stopping the importing of this species, before the wild population is decimated and can not recover.
Thanks!

OK. So Linda Lee is now officially a Grandma! Her little "Survivor" just delivered 7 little Bangaiis. The Dad is doing great and back in with Mom. I was really surprised that this little four month old male could go the distance with his first brood. He carried for 21 days and this afternoon I was able to gently net him and move him to another tank where he deposited the seven little Bangaii babies. I'll take some pics tomorrow when the lights are on, I kept them quiet and isolated this afternoon. I am hopefull that I will have more success raising this brood. The adult male (from the pair that this brood's Mom came from) is still carrying a mouthful of babies as well so these guys may have some company soon.
The Threadfin male released the larvae that he was carrying last night as well, but I was too tired after an all nighter birdathon for the Atlanta Audubon CBC to watch and check when I got home last night!
I think the Pajama Cardinal is still holding eggs tonight too.
This stuff is fun!

stickx911 12-22-2008, 10:41 PM that's awesome.:yay:
lmk when a couple are ready for a new home
jmaneyapanda 12-23-2008, 8:02 AM HA! I was fiddling in my sump last night, and I found at least 1 bangaii that was the size of a pea. Who know homw many else live down there. Glad to see at least one didnt become "enrichment" for the big boys in the tank.
Very nice! They are amazing little survivors...
jmaneyapanda 12-23-2008, 9:22 AM I am actually contemnplating moving the breeding pair to the 30 cuvbe to give them a better chance. Its just catching them oput of the 210 thats the issue.
mysterybox 12-23-2008, 11:04 AM Incredible!
I hear they are too agressive for my very, very passive tank, what dja think?

Not aggressive at all, except to conspecifics. They would be perfect for a docile tank.
mysterybox 12-23-2008, 12:09 PM well sweet!
Do u reply have like a waiting list? I'd love to be on it, if ya do! If not, lmk when ya sell one!
Thanks!
NotiReef 12-23-2008, 1:23 PM I would love to have 1 or a couple as well...LMK...If there is a list put me on it :) Thanks!!!!!!

Mine are pretty easy to get in to the fish trap. They are usually the first ones in it and I have to chase them out to catch the fish I am actually trying to get! Of course, once the male is holding eggs, I can not get him to go in the trap.

twistoflime 12-23-2008, 1:31 PM When they are ready I would love to put 2 in the 320g tank! LMK

Mabey! But these are my moms favorite type of fish. We're planning to get a pair for my moms birthday.
Chibils 12-28-2008, 10:32 PM I'm a bit late to the party, but put me on the list! :D I'd love to take them as soon as they hit quarter size if you give them away that early!
Quick Update on this young pair, the first batch of babies were born on 12/22 and the male delivered 7 babies that are all doing well.
Last night, I watched the female slid up next to the male and shake her body. It looked like some sort of courtship display. I did not get a chance to look at the tank after the lights went out, but today the young male is carrying eggs again! Woohoo! If he holds them full term again, I should have another batch popping out around january 19th.
That was only eight days between spawnings... boy I hope he got enough to eat! It's going to be awhile before his next meal!

stickx911 01-03-2009, 4:41 PM I'm sure you know to do this, but make sure you separate the pair for a short while after spawning, or the male could starve. I have heard this is pretty common among cardinal fish pairs. (in the little research I have done about the species).
I could be totally wrong, but I figure it's something to consider or look into.
Thanks Stick... good suggestion. I have not done that, but I do hammer them with food between spawning. I'll have to think about that too.

aceheart1976 01-05-2009, 8:31 PM bobz, are you planning on selling the survivors? would love to get a few myself, just hoping the 24 gal with the clarkii clown and yellow tail damsel would be good for them
SCUBA Diva 01-05-2009, 9:30 PM They are a beautiful pair! He is a "young player."
fishgardener 01-09-2009, 5:29 PM Bobz, will you please be on the next Tour of Tanks! I would love to see your set up for breeding Bengaii. I want a pair! I hope you sell your little guys when they get bigger. I have really enjoyed hearing about them.

Sherlye,
Come on by anytime you want! I am in the middle of reworking my fish room (ok, closet!) but you can still come by and see it.
