View Full Version : i need help identifying a slug
Coley83 11-19-2008, 12:00 PM i have 4 slugs that have come out of my live rock. kinda hard to describe and i don't have any pics. but they are all under an inch. cream with brown. they have little tentacles on their backs i would say like 6 of them. and they don't have a shell. does anyone know. i tried looking on, www.seaslugforum.net (http://www.seaslugforum.net) and couldn't find it. so maybe someone on here would know.
thanks.
nicole.
***stay warm out there!!****
Derek_S 11-19-2008, 12:01 PM Are they a type of nudibranc? You probably will have to provide a pic to get an accurate response, but I'd try to remove them if possible. Usually free slugs are BAD.
Check out this page and see if you can find it:

mysterybox 11-19-2008, 1:16 PM nicole, does it have a shell?
Coley83 11-19-2008, 1:21 PM no shell that i can see.
Coley83 11-19-2008, 1:30 PM i see a pic of Nassarius Vibex but mine doesn't have a shell but that could be b/c there isn't any shell's for them to get into?
i'm gonna look for a Nassarius Vibex without a shell.
Coley83 11-19-2008, 1:34 PM Nassarius snails have a long tube-like siphon that protrudes from the end of the shell.
not it. it doesn't have that. and i don't think its a snail.
Coley83 11-19-2008, 1:38 PM okay the little tentacles are not grouped together. they are spread out. evenly on its back. in a row, almost.
Derek_S 11-19-2008, 2:06 PM sounds like a nudibranc. i'd take it out.
Barbara 11-19-2008, 2:41 PM If I had to guess without a pic, I'd say it might be a stomatella and maybe you just don't notice the shell b/c it's such a small part of the total slug?

http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/SwSnails/Stomatella.php
Coley83 11-19-2008, 3:08 PM i would have to agree with barbara. the stomatella looks the most like it. so if it is that thats good. for what i read. right?
Barbara 11-19-2008, 3:10 PM Absolutely. I love mine. And if they start breeding, you can trade or sell them. They are highly desirable clean up crew b/c they typically only come out at night, so you don't see them working. Make sure they're stomies though. I wouldn't want to steer you wrong. If they are stomies, you should see a small part of a shell, referred to as a "cap". When the stomie is crawling around, the cap is usually only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the size of the slug underneath. They come in different colors too, like tan, white, black, brown, striped.
Fish Scales2 11-19-2008, 3:35 PM Ok, the live rock came out of my 90 gal tank which has a lobster and 3 hare' in the tank. Do the safe thing and pull them out. But these are baby hares so I would be happy to buy them from you or trade for part of your cleanup crew. Still try to get a good photo of it so we can all see.
Chris
Barbara 11-19-2008, 3:41 PM Baby hares, like "sea hares"?
Fish Scales2 11-19-2008, 3:49 PM yes

mysterybox 11-19-2008, 4:48 PM baby sea hares (most likely) Chris had 3 in those rocks, but removed them. They must of laid eggs. You can trade them back to him for snails, though. They are worth about 8 to 15 bucks a piece (of course, u would have to work that out with him, and he'll still have to make a profit). Your tank won't support them for very long. I don't know how they lived through your cycle. good find!
mysterybox 11-19-2008, 4:51 PM those are retail prices, not what he would pay. I bet he'll trade ya though!
Coley83 11-19-2008, 4:52 PM well i like them can i keep two? and give him two? i have 4. do you know how big they get?
by the way... we have found more then just them. some other weird stuff. like red balloons and those worms. (alot of worms) and some coral. i have no idea what kinds. one looks like snow flakes! but cream color. and one is pink, and looks like a hard coral and we have these yellow corals that look like little brains! i thought they were some kind of sack but i don't think so now.
mysterybox 11-19-2008, 4:52 PM u can keep one. but you'll need to come by and get some food, soon. I have some seaweed that u can have.
Coley83 11-19-2008, 4:53 PM i'm totally up for trading, any day! you know that.
mysterybox 11-19-2008, 4:53 PM find your charger for your camera
Coley83 11-19-2008, 4:53 PM i need to feed it? won't it just eat the algea.
Coley83 11-19-2008, 4:54 PM i'm keeping the fatty! you should see this one. way bigger then the rest. i'm gonna name him tonight! our first sea hare.
