What is the smallest size tank I could house one in? Do they need a top?

Size of the tank doesn't matter -- a nano is okay.

But in a small tank, you must definitely have a secure top. These guys are escape artists.

30 gal min.and all eels should have top. Indoor\outdoor carpet has been known to work but I would not risk with GDM. $

Debra at Cap Bay housed one sucessfully in a 12g nano with good filtration and regular wc's. They're cave-dwellers and aren't out in the water column very often.

Carpet...? For...?

30 gal and they should have a top. I would personally use a 1in. Piece of black indoor\outdoor carpet around the inside of tank at very top.

Sorry for double Post. I do agree that they are totally fine in a 12 gal with little issue. But they are morays, and often people put more inhabitants than they planned on. I have never heard of a Golden bothering tank buddies but as we all know this is saltwater and anything can happen.

Yes carpet, it irritates them when they touch it.

You're thinking of octopi. This wont work at all for an eel. They will sail right over it.

Tyler if your eel does climb out I will replace it! I have never had an issue when using carpet. I have had I dont know how many eels and only had issues when not using.
I always suggest using the carpet method with eels and octopi.

I have watched eels approach the carpet, touch it and forever aviod it like the plague.

I also have done open top eel tanks with only carpet strip. Never any problem.

That being said today will be the day they all prove me wrong.

Jmaneyapandi: All the respect in the world to you but tell me about your experience with carpet strips and eels.

Ok, I have seen eels go over carpet, tape, mesh, even broken glass. Particularly when introduced to the tank. IME only solid barriers will contain them. Good luck.

I will when I get he but you basically glue a 1 inch strip around then insid of tv tank so when the eel is swimming up the glass it hits the carpet before it gets to the top of the tank and the Indoor outdoor stuff is pretty rough so it irritates the eel obviously there are different opinions of this method but I will put some pics up when I get home
