glxtrix 01-02-2007, 8:34 PM .....we expect the location to be just off I-75...and yo momma!!! ok, sorry, that was left open. Anyways, Porter is the man! I've learned the jist of what I know from him and have seen a clutch of his baby seahorses.....sooooo adorable!!! Hopefully I'll be able to make this meeting, work tho has been brutal with deadlines! This will be a good one to attend :)
Sprayin70 01-02-2007, 8:37 PM Sounds fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vettesarebest 01-02-2007, 8:37 PM Ill be there.
aquazoa 01-02-2007, 9:32 PM You are all most kind, thanks! And thank you Tony for the honor of being asked to speak for another ARC meeting. I tell you, there is something in this hobby for everyone. The success with seahorses has only been the most recent delightful chapter for me in marine aquariology.
This is going to be a really great talk. I am going to structure the talk around the outline I have created over the past summer which is the genesis of a book that is manifesting fruition. It is an advanced discussion of the latest theories of captive culturing methodologies for Hippocampus erectus since my work with them began over a year ago. I am going to try to bring in some of my 2 month old specimens from Lenny if I possibly can. I think I will bring in an artemia decapsulation and hatching setup for demonstration and I will most likely bring in my ol' trusty flip chart with some diagrams which has served me well in talks I've given in the past.
I am really looking forward to it!
Porter
Showtime305 01-02-2007, 9:47 PM I'll be there.
donnyholland 01-02-2007, 10:19 PM wow this sounds cool.. I really am interested in raising some shrimp so I look forward to learning lots of new stuff!
/donny
tsciarini 01-02-2007, 10:21 PM Well you're in luck! Porter has also been sucessfully raising several spp. of shrimp as well for some time now! This meeting is on Seahorses but you may be able to sneak in a couple shrimp questions afterwards :)
Jgoal55 01-03-2007, 1:49 AM I'd like to go as well so I can finally meet some of you. Lee, want to grab some beers before the meeting?
I know I said I would go to the last couple and I missed them both so I suck but I'll definitely be at this one.
see you all there.
Lenny 01-03-2007, 10:25 AM Well, with this decision it looks like there's no reason to go through with the seahorse meeting I've been trying to plan for January for two months now. I will be taking people's info at the meeting (and beyond) to put together a more formal list of people interested in seahorses so that we can continue to get together in the coming months and get deeper into this branch of the hobby together.
tsciarini 01-03-2007, 10:29 AM :) the club is more than willing to lend a hand... there's been so much talk recently about sea horses that it just seemed like a good idea to bring on this meeting topic!
Vettesarebest 01-03-2007, 11:29 AM yeah I can't wait. Ill definatly be there. We should make a special section devoted to our horse fans on this website.
glxtrix 01-03-2007, 11:42 AM possibly jorge, I need to see if I can make it first, the week in tahoe is going to set back my deadlines a lot and I need to make up that time.
tsciarini 01-03-2007, 1:22 PM We're still waiting on a confirmation for location...
in the meantime, does anyone have a projector we can use? (http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2120)
Stroid 01-03-2007, 1:53 PM normally how long are the meetings and as a new member do I need to do something specific to bring something specific to prove who I am like my paypal receipt since I don't have a member card yet
Vettesarebest 01-03-2007, 2:14 PM No you do not need to. They last like 2 hours or so give or take. I've only been to two meetings and both of those were informal with no speaker. It will be nice to have it kind of organized.
tsciarini 01-03-2007, 2:33 PM The meeting location will be held at Steve's office building. See directions below:

glxtrix 01-03-2007, 3:39 PM such a great place for meetings. And as always, thankyou Steve.
Sprayin70 01-03-2007, 6:53 PM Awesome, maybe this time we can see the tank. LOL.
Lenny 01-04-2007, 10:40 AM I'd like to thank Tony for inviting me to share the stage with Porter. Porter will be discussing the raising of the fry, and I will be covering the aspects involved in keeping the adults. I have already received some emails and messages about things people would like to see addressed, and if anyone else has any thoughts on what they'd like to learn about, please feel free to pm me, or email me at bhjenterainment@gmail.com .
Thanks for the opportunity to come talk about what's become such a passion of mine. Between Porter's fry information and my keeping info, I hope that people become more interested in this aspect of the reefkeeping hobby, and that we spark some real love about our little buddies. I know that theres a few people already working on setting up seahorse tanks, and I hope that at the end of this meeting, we have at least a few more that "catch a' fire".
Peace.
glxtrix 01-04-2007, 11:11 AM bob marley???? ha..ha..ha, get it, "catch a fire"... lol, sorry. Thanks Lenny for offering your knowlegde as well.
Kevin 01-04-2007, 11:12 AM This is going to be an absolutely awesome meeting
jessezm 01-04-2007, 11:15 AM Guys, this sounds so great and I'm sorry I'll have to miss it. Tuesday is the first meeting of the Ga Aquarium Family Advisory Board that I'll be serving on. Hopefully our meetings won't always conflict. Lenny and Porter, I'll be chatting you both up in the future as my wife has starting showing a lot of interest in keeping and raising seahorses, which is a major thing that I want to support since otherwise she has shown little interest in being involved in this hobby with me.
Porter, I'll come see you soon at FS&M.
--Jesse
Lenny 01-04-2007, 11:54 AM Well, it turns out I might or might not be speaking at the meeting, lol. Hopefully I will still be giving a small presentation at the meeting, but if not, Im sure that you all will still enjoy the information that does get presented by porter, and if anyone has questions, I'm always available for chatting :)
johnqx4 01-04-2007, 2:46 PM Well, with this decision it looks like there's no reason to go through with the seahorse meeting I've been trying to plan
I dunno about that Lenny. A meeting (especially if held at Tony's) is always in order...
Don't you know!
johnny
jessezm 01-04-2007, 3:07 PM Since Porter's talk will be about breeding and rearing seahorses, it would be great to have a whole meeting dedicated to how to set up and keep them as well, which would seem a natural fit for you, Lenny. Why don't we just try to have two separate meetings so each topic can be more adequately covered? I'm sure Tony would be open to that. And since Porter has such a repartoire of knowledge, I'm sure people will want him to answer lots of questions, which might cut in to your time if you try to squeeze it all in to a few short minutes. Why don't we think about giving each topic its due so you have a chance to impart your knowledge as well?
I had a long talk with Porter today about him doing his thing about raising fry, and then me doing my thing about the realities of Keeping them for the long term. Tony had also suggested doing two meetings as a possibility. Personally, I think it would be great to do it together in one big meeting, but I'm open to however this plays out. I just want to get more people motivated into getting into keeping seahorses.
and don't worry... there's always time for meetings and socializing and beer....
It just made sense to me, that if the topic is going to be seahorses for this meeting, well, let's really do it up right, and give a broad spectrum overview, as well as the scientific methodology of raising the fry.
I'll let y'all know when I get the final word, and sorry for jumping the gun. I was just very excited that I thought I was going to be able to come share what i've learned with y'all :)
jessezm 01-04-2007, 7:42 PM No problem at all--It just seems like it's a vast amount of information that might be more helpful to take in in two chunks. We've done that in the past with topics like reef chemistry. Our meetings aren't long enough to cover everything at once!
donnyholland 01-04-2007, 8:32 PM well I for one will stay late.. It will be painful if I'm not given the full spectrum of info.
Its like seeing a cliff hanger and having to wait a month for the conclusion..
But hey what do I know I'm just a little copepod in this big ocean...
/donny
tsciarini 01-04-2007, 10:08 PM Hey everyone! Hold your horses!!! (LOL)
Due to the ammount of information available and two men in a one horse town (lol) we're actually going to stick to the origional plan that was announced by the club.
Porter is going to educate us in the breeding and raising of fry (his own personal research is amazing!).
Lenny and I have discussed the possiblity of presenting a more generalized discussion on the maintenance and setup of the habitat required for adult seahorses on a different date. So look for an announcement in the next few days. We're pending on a location already for a Sunday but we'll announce specifics once we've got the plan in place.
Lenny 01-04-2007, 10:36 PM I apologize for the miscommunication and jumping the gun.
gwen_o_lyn 01-04-2007, 10:43 PM No harm done. It's nice to have people so anxious to speak.
I'm glad we broke this up into 2 different meetings so the speakers can be more thorough with the discussions.
An ARC weekend event is also great! I will be sure to invite the Chattanooga Reefers since they are more likely to come down if we get together on weekends.
aquazoa 01-04-2007, 10:48 PM WHEW!!!
What a wave of passion on here! In light of the whole situation I have come to the conclusion that each of our "talks" would be better served if given on separate occasions. Doing both on next Tues. eve would just simply be too much at once, therefore I am going to give my talk as originally requested, with my lecture focused on the captive rearing of H. erectus fry. Information about adult/broodstock husbandry will be touched upon and can be referenced at Seahorse.org, Syngnathid.org or other excellent websites devoted to keeping seahorses.
I have been keeping marine and reef aquaria in Atlanta for 17 years, first stocking my tank with livestock from the old Tropiquarium that used to exist where Piedmont forks onto Cheshire Bridge. I joined the original Atlanta Marine Aquarium Society in 1994 and have been propagating corals ever since. In 1997 I began my employment at The Fish Store and More, becoming Invertebrate Director there in Jan., 1998, a position I still keep to this day and have been freely giving helpful advice to hobbyists for over 9 yrs. on the advanced topics of reefkeeping. I have given talks to the Lovett School Marine Biology class under Dan Dalke, talks at the Fish Store on various subjects including the theories of Lysmata shrimp larviculture for the Atlanta Reef Club after the publication of my papers on Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine (formerly Aquarium Frontiers), "Behavior and Breeding of Peppermint Shrimp," and "Captive Observations of Fire Shrimp Larvae", published by Terry Siegel, editor in April and Nov. 2004. I attended MACNA 1999 and visited the coral propagation facility Aquatic Wildlife Company in Cleveland TN several times. Personal friends and acquaintances I've come to know in the hobby include Julian Sprung, Martin Moe, Albert Thiel, Dana Riddle, Noel Curry, Eric Bornemann, Anthony Calfo, Bruce Carlson, Charles Delbeek,Matt Wittenrich, Andy Rhyne (peppermint shrimp graduate biologist at FL Tech), Daniel Knop, and many many others. All of my ARC friends such as Ray O'Connor, Bob Lemke, Steve Shindell, Chris Horne, and so many others I cannot quantify here are a part of this great marine family to which I proudly belong. Perhaps the fellow colleagues from my store over the past decade I would have to credit as being some of the most positively knowedgeable marine and freshwater hobbyists I've ever met, a quality my store has been known for for so long as we believe our animals are worth nothing less.
This meeting will be a memorable addendum to that priceless legacy.
judochop 01-05-2007, 9:22 AM Not sure if I am going to be able to make it to this meeting. Is anyone planning on making a video recording? I would love the chance to hear more on this topic.
Jgoal55 01-05-2007, 2:46 PM Hey All,
A shot in the dark here....I will be at the meeting on Tuesday and was wondering if anyone attending might have about 20-30lbs of live rock and a bubble tip anemone for sale.
If so, please let me know how much so i can be sure to take enough cash.
Thanks and looking forward to my first meeting,
Jorge
PS - Also, to the Seahorse experts...I'd like to hear a little about the very basics of setting up a seahorse tank from scratch....wasn't sure if that was in the plan....probably was but just in case. Thanks.
tsciarini 01-05-2007, 4:56 PM PS - Also, to the Seahorse experts...I'd like to hear a little about the very basics of setting up a seahorse tank from scratch....wasn't sure if that was in the plan....probably was but just in case. Thanks.
This meeting is going to focus primarily on Porters research on breeding and the raising of fry.
Be on the look out for a more "Basic" seahorse meeting in the near future!
aquazoa 01-07-2007, 11:52 PM I will touch on basic needs in creating a seahorse tank so yes, that question will be answered although the majority of the talk will be on fry rearing
ReefTourist 01-09-2007, 3:58 PM I couldn't make the last meeting, so this will be my first.
Late notice, but I'll probably be bringing some small pulsing xenia frags for sale/trade if anyone's interested. Otherwise they'll be off to Marine Fish tomorrow.
ReefTourist 01-09-2007, 6:44 PM turns out that only 2 frags are ready to go, but I'll bring 'em anyway.
Lenny 01-15-2007, 12:57 PM Gwen, did you still want to see if the Chattanooga folks wanted to come down for this? The more the merrier!
aquazoa 01-20-2007, 9:05 PM Just wanted to thank everyone in the club for the warm reception and turnout for my talk. Good to see many familiar faces. The video we made came out great, transferred it to dvd. Horses are doing great too.
Thanks!
