Hey Guys,
So as most of yall know, I just got a new mandarin goby! I decided to set up a tank specifically for copepods and a few little coral frags... I got a simple coral life light and HOB filter.. for 50 dollars!
So far, i havent set it up yet, but when i get water in it and some sand (pm me if you have any) ill post some pictures!!

Usually petland and petco carry small bags of black for less than $10 bucks. It will probably cost you more in gas to go get it than just to run to a local place. I had black sand in my other tank and it was awesome. Cant wait to see it set up, however if you are truly doing just pods and small corals then I would suggest and air pump as opposed to a filter. A filter will suck up pods and chop them up.

Air Pump? Like a simple air pump.. like airation stone?

Yup, exactly. You will need to do maybe a half gallon water change a week on it but that should keep it nice and happy.

thanks!.. ill go and get an airstone .. you think even if i have like 5lbs-10lbs of rock they will still be sucked into the filter?

i have a HOB filter with a covering so that the pods can get caught up in the filter.. does anything think i could get a little fish for in there w/ pods or will it eat them?

Toss a few more rocks in and get a small Mantis shrimp.

If its for growing pods then no fish and nothing else besides MAYBE corals. Anything else will eat the pods and in a tank that tiny your population wont be able to get very large without crashing so corals would only add to the bioload. I would do just rocks and dose phyto.

ok thanks!!. .right now i put some corals in there just to get the water going, you think 1 crab and 1 snail will be okay? or just a snail.. ive never done this type of thing before
thanks

You put corals into the tank to get it going? Like as in get the cycle going?

What?!?! Why would you put corals in there? Your going to kill the coral. Buy a test kit and test the water. Once your params are all 0 you can add corals but they will just die, add to the bioload and lengthen your cycle.

I know your new around here, but you need to step back, slow down and read a good sw book before you buy anything else living. Your purchase of a mandarin is questionable at most and putting corals in a tank that you just set up is plain cruel. I wont offer any advice if your going to keep treating your inhabitants this way.

I suggest you purchase and read this book cover to cover:

Spending money on coral other then the book that was referd is a bad idea.. I can't fathom why you would ask for help(not really so much on this thread, more so on the thread before this) and totally blow off the advice given. We are only here to help. Just trying to help look out for you, like most here do. Set back, relax and listen to these guys.. that's what I do, and I learn sonething new almost everyday

Cool, Im glad your more concerned with your own gratification than killing a coral. Your highly uneducated in this hobby so as my parting gift to you ill tell you why your wrong, once again. When you remove the rock from the tank even if it is cycled there is die off from it being exposed to the air. Sponges that are within rocks die immediately upon exposure to air. If your water is that cloudy, then its detritus that is in the tank and guess what, thats gonna be die off as well. Oh and moving on to the sand, if there is anything in the sand that was stirred up when the water was added, thats gonna cause die off as well. Its almost impossible to prevent a cycle when setting up a tank unless you REALLY know what your doing.

So in closing good luck with your tanks even though you antagonize someone trying to give you sound advice. Maybe you should put some of that money into a membership and not more coral to kill. Funny, your pretty quick to jump on the free corals on the site.

I am a newbie as well, only 9 weeks into this hobby. I have learned a lot from the folks here and will continue to do so. Patience and listening will go a long way to a successful reef tank!!

So can you actualy grow enough pods in a 2 gallon tank, with aireation, liverock, and macro. To feed a mandrin ? Or where yall just being nice?

No. Read the thread. Starting at aroung post 13 it starts getting addressed.
They were nice though considering the doom of the livestock. OP not so much which is probably what led to him being banned

I was told by a lfs that a mandrin neede at least 50 lbs of live rock . How fast do they multiply, and how would you catch them to feed the other tank? My 5.5 hardley has any pods . The neon goby eats all he finds.

Smoothie
07-13-2010, 2:13 AM
Sounds like a healthy neon goby. Rock and rubble transfer is the only easy way to get the pods from one tank to another unless you have a fuge on both or have them plumbed together.
The amount of rock isn't so much the case as the tank being established and having a large number of pods to support a mandarin especially one that may have competition
