View Full Version : suggestion: minors
mysterybox 10-20-2008, 12:33 PM wouldn't it be a good idea to designate a different color (or some other marking) for all minors under say 21 or 18? I believe I've been careful about posting around children, however, a mistake could easily be made by someone. Just a suggestion,
Gwhiz 10-20-2008, 12:41 PM Since the minors out here can read all posts, I'm not sure what would be gained....you might avoid saying something directly to the poster, but....
mysterybox 10-20-2008, 12:44 PM exactly, but yeah, I see your point, too.
Yeah, it makes me uncomfortable too but I dont really see an option. I am not so much worried about what I might say as much as them reading a fight btw members and just seeing a nasty side of someone and thinking is ok to act like that in certain situations. That and alot of cryptic off color comments are made on here that are pretty unacceptable if they figure out what it means.
strapingyunglad 10-20-2008, 1:32 PM If a minor is on the internet the last thing to worry about is reading a suggestive coment or whatever on a reefing site. Theres allot worse out there and if anything inopropriate is said (written) the mods can and will do somthing about it.

You must have missed the "censorship" debate and its not a matter of inappropriate if the debate is just two people tearing each other apart which does happen.

It doesnt happen!! I dare you to challange me!!! I would tear you apart if I could! lol

mysterybox 10-20-2008, 2:39 PM Lol
mysterybox 10-20-2008, 2:39 PM ok, so maybe that wasn't one of my smartest suggestions! LOL
The bad thing about a designation is that it also will make them an easy target; with one quick scan, you know who's a minor and who isn't.
mysterybox 10-20-2008, 3:36 PM ok, ok!!! I got it!! Dumb idea!!! LOL
Nah, not a dumb idea. I just dont know what the right solution is. I would like to see a way to be sure that the younger ones stay safe on here.

Personally that responsibility lies solely with the parents.
Legally platy you are correct. However ethically that can be debated, and that is an entirely other debate I wont get into. Even so, If we are hosting a site and know that there is a growing youth population on there, It seems like there would be a chance for some improvement in some way.
Barbara 10-20-2008, 6:06 PM Personally that responsibility lies solely with the parents.
I am always one of the first to say that the responsibility of raising the kids falls to the parents. However, in this context I think our older members are simply discussing ways that we should behave in light of the fact that there are minors on here. And I do agree on that point. Even though it is the parents' responsibility to be sure the kids are safe, it's the community's responsibility to set good examples, act appropriately, and even help, encourage, or guide young folks that come into their path. We must not forget that it takes a village to raise a child, and all of us should participate and set good examples.
All that being said though, I do think the young folks on here a) already know the dirty jokes, innuendos, references and trash talk that we participate in, and b) are smart enough to know what's appropriate and what's not.
I wouldn't want them specially designated due to the "safety" issue either. A member who communicates on here regularly will come to learn who the young folks are, but I wouldn't want to make them obvious to someone who isn't active in our community (club).
Acroholic 10-20-2008, 6:57 PM I'll be coming out with a new software product in a few months called Reef Nanny. It is a reef club specific control that eliminates all objectionable/questionable/off-color/politically incorrect comments and makes everyone get along! One flavor: Vanilla!:D

twistoflime 10-20-2008, 10:33 PM Ok I just thought that posting this in a kids point of view would help. I have been told somany times by my parents to exersize internet safty (especially now that I am on arc) I'm not aloud to give out any personal information besides the general area of GA I live in, my first name, my general age, and all the stuff about my tank. Also if you guys are worried about exposing us to to much...trust me we've already been exposed to it. If I'm not mistaken I am the youngest person here and trust me anything that you would talk about on here that might be considered inapropriat was exposed to me in 6th grade. Between the kids at school and the health class we have to attend each year you get exposed to alot in middle school. I would not worry about restricting anything to much because every one here is 12 years and older so they should of already been exposed to everything. Just thought a different point of view might help.
Thanks, Diane

Thanks for sharing!
just one thing though for you personally, unfortunately there are a lot of really horrible people out there that can try to gain your trust, or actually state that they are younger then what they are, or even use their kids sign in stuff. I hear of too many incidents because my friend is on the Innocent Images Child Task Force with the FBI, so please don't be so confident; better to be a little apprehensive! All those kids thought they were smart & streetwise, too, but these sick guys don't "think" like you & me, so it's harder to understand them.

You are by far one of the most mature 12 year old I have met and would have made me look like the slow kid when I was your age! I am very glad to hear your parents are looking out for you, I am just worried if someone else is not as savvy as you.
Steve 10-20-2008, 10:49 PM You're still slow Charlie. No difference between 10 years ago and now. :) lol
j/k
reefscape 10-20-2008, 10:54 PM steve...lol...thats funny I dont care who you are...roflmao
Amici 10-20-2008, 11:07 PM That's 11 years ago and touche. :)
Steve 10-20-2008, 11:12 PM I was just stabbing at your age, didn't really want to make you look too old. I think we got a rivalry in the making like Jeremy and Lee's... haha
Amici 10-20-2008, 11:20 PM Fine, But your Jeremy.
Steve 10-20-2008, 11:24 PM Jeremy's got a cooler tank then Lee anyway. Plus Jeremy gets to play with kangaroo's. Sure he's hairy, but who cares. He's cool as hell!
He's also got a clarion angel... What does Lee have? A couple chromis?
Just baggin on ya Lee!

Too funny...almost spit my Rockstar out on the monitor! Good one Steve!

And you really shouldn't make fun of big hairy types. Even Sasquatch has feelings. Yes he smells like a wet Yak in the summer heat but when you work with Roo's you tend to become one!:confused2:
As for Lee's tank...he no longer a reefer. Just a FOWLR BB sumptin another!:D

BASSCYN 10-21-2008, 3:33 PM A lot of good points made here, and valid concerns.
This is the ONLY forum I let my son (bass.son) participate in. I only agreed to it if he posted his age. I think it is good to know when you are responding to a minor. My hope is that the responsible folks here will respect that when they post. Like Barbara said “it takes a village”. So far…so good.
As Raj mentioned however, the flip side of labeling is that the person could be targeted. So…you are right. That is a difficult decision. Although, I think a lot of other sites have your age posted with your avatar. Granted, any kid could put whatever they wanted, but if mom and dad are watching as they should, they will make sure junior post the correct age.
I think Platy nailed it. It’s really up to the parents to control what there kids have access to. So if it’s really important to us to make this a site safe for kids we just need to keep it PG.
And for the most part…it is.
FutureInterest 10-21-2008, 8:03 PM I've always been a proponent of limiting access to this forum for adults only. Somewhat because the club can be liable under some circumstances if a child is victimized from information gathered on this forum.
Mostly though its cause I dont' like kids, except my own :).
fraggel rock 10-21-2008, 11:34 PM my bicolor pseudochromis victimized my 6 line, I think there should be a Ga fish offenders website.
