Hi All,

I am setting up a 30 gal cube and wanted to incorporate a very simple filtration systen. My idea is to buy a cpr hang on back refugium filter and a tunze 9002 skimmer. I would insert another small partition and place the skimmer in there. So the tank H2O would first enter the skimmer then on to the refugium area then out to the tank. Please give me your feed back on this idea.

Thank You
Mark

Sounds good. Will you have any mechanical filtration like filter floss?

Hi John,

I guess I could put a piece of floss right where the H2O comes into the filter to filter out anything that came through the pump. I would have to stay on top of that though to keep it from being a nitrate breeding ground.

Thank you and any other sugestions are welcomed.

In my fuge, I have live rock, 3 mangroves and cheato in there.

Hi All,

I seems like this would work. I will definately be using some algea in the refugium side and the skimmer on the other side. I plan on doing mostly sps but will have some zoas and maybe a softie or two. Do you think that 2 koralias 1's would do for H2O movement?

Thank you
Mark

I use 2 ones currently but I also run a 500gph pump so that give me almost 40 times the water volume. If your running any smaller pump I would step up to k-2's

Ace also has an overflow box that will fit it if your still interested in drilling it Mark

Ace - I sent to a PM re cpr fuge.

John - looking at all my options as well as my budget. I the cpr fuge from ACE works out then I am more inclined to go that route especially since I did not want to drill the tank.

Thank you all for all your help and I will try to get some pictures up so you can see what I have so far.

Thanks
Mark

Hi All,

I was in Jamaica taking care of some business. Now I am back so here is the update. I have a cpr fuge on order as well as a tunze 9002 skimmer and 2 koralia 2's. I picked up a 150 watt sunpod from John so that will be the lighting. Hopefully I will receive the fuge and skimmer early next week. I am now looking for a few nice pieces of figi rock and a few pieces of tonga branches as well as some sand.

Thank you,
Mark

I had a piece of maple and some scrap ply lying around the shop. All I had to buy was the hardware and plexi glass for the door.

Hi All,

Well my CPR fuge, skimmer, and pumps came today. Must say that I am a little disappointed with the skimmer as it not what I expected and it dosen't fit the way I planned it  . Nevertheless I will continue with the build and see how it goes.

I haven't been able to find a skimmer I like for my Aquapod either. Post pics of your set up as you have the chance. I've been thinking about doing something similar so I'd like to learn from your mistakes!

Hi Brett,

I sure dosen't make sence for the both of us to make the same mistake :) . The challenge is I would have to build some sort of rise to go into the fugr so that the skimmer will be at the correct water level. Also IMHO this skimmer is quite cheaply built if say compared to the remora for example.
If I did place the skimmer in the fuge the remainding space for the fuge would be quite small.

(wifey calling me for dinner and I have to go will continue in a few)

Hi again, since I won't be have many pollutants in the way of fishes, I am going to setup the tank using just the fuge and closely monitor my nutrient levels. If it is not controllable using the fuge alone then I will have to do a sump with a hong on back overflow.

If you are up for the work then you can just up your WC to maybe 7-10 gallons a week and that should keep your levels perfect and tank very happy. Looking good!

Well, I just set up a remora nano skimmer. It's kinda loud so, unless it starts doing something I'm not sure I'm happy with it. I'll run it for a couple of weeks to give it time to do something before I decide if I'm gonna keep it or not. I've been running purigen and chemi-pure elite and have't had any significant water issues, other than algea which it looks like I've gotten over. For a simple "fuge" I've got a ball of cheato in my return side chamber. Your tank doesn't have any included overflow/return chambers so, I think you'll pro'ly wanna run some type of HOB fuge... :confused2: I do about a 10% water change weekly too.

I've been tinkering with flow lately and still not happy. I wanna keep it simple.

I did get the cpr HOB fuge, so that is what I will be running. 10% water change weekly isn't bad, that I could handle. I have another nano idea that I am playing with in my head and if it does materialize then I will use the tunze skimmer on it.
Hope the remora nano works out for you.

I'd like to see pics of the fuge when it's all set up.

I checked the remora this morning and it's making nasty foam... I guess that means it's working? So long as it's doing something I'll keep running it. I pulled my UV sterilizer out as I've been reading mixed opinions about using them in a reef set up. I'll keep it in case I start having an algea problem again.

Well after a few bumps in the road here's the scoop. I will have to do a sump after all. I did not like the skimmer was going to fit into the fuge and I would like to make sure that I have a pretty good filtration system.
So, anyone (john) who would like to help me out with drilling a hole in the tank for a 1" bulkhead please give my a shout, PM or reply and I would be happy to take you up on that offer. After that I will be able to continue with the build.

thanks

Does anyone here use the cpr aquafuge2 with protein skimmer. If so I have a few questions.
1. Does it skim reasonably well?
2. Did you make any mods to the pump or change the pump completely?
3. Any problems with it ot things you dont like about it.

I did not like how the tunze 9002 fit into the fuge I had and found one that has the builtin skimmer. it is however missing some parts and was just wondering if it would be worth it to buy these parts.

Thank you for all your help
