View Full Version : My puny 185 gallon display tank
Steve 10-12-2008, 11:24 PM Picked up the tank from Ankur tonight with the help of Simon, Perry, Jason, Derek, and my Dad (thanks guys, Canton Reef Club always comes through!) We got it in the basement and on the stand pretty easily... Hope to start the build this week, just have to find a sump... Gonna call to a few places and see what I can dig up and then drop the sump under the stand and go from there...
Details:
Tank: Deep Sea Aquatics 185 gallon 60x30x25
Sump: Going with a standard 75
Skimmer: Undecided ASM G-2 to start with
Lighting: 2 400 watt Lumenbrights with Reeflux 12k bulbs, and when I can, I'm going to drop a 250 watt pendant in the middle of the two Lumenbrights
Return Pump: Mag drive or an Ocean runner, aiming for about 1200 gallons per hour.
Circulation in the tank: Numerous powerheads, a few Tunze's and maybe a couple Maxi-jets if I can hide them.
Frag tank: 25 gallon Oceanic Custom 24"x18"x13"

twistoflime 10-12-2008, 11:28 PM Wow can't wait to see stuff in it. I have a question. Do you get awsome deals at marine fish because you work there? If so you'll have that tank full of corals in no time!
Steve 10-12-2008, 11:31 PM I can, but don't really ask for much, because I normally just trade with people... That being said, I'm gonna need some frag packs in a few weeks! I aim to get water in it by the end of next week and rock in the same time-frame... Lights would be last since I can still run the Cube at half capacity with just coral for quite a while.
FutureInterest 10-12-2008, 11:32 PM Wow you're hardcore. Nice dimensions. :)
ankur1113 10-12-2008, 11:33 PM dang I am already missing it, looks like you cleaned the glass
Steve 10-12-2008, 11:36 PM It is pretty dope Jin... When I have it full I'm gonna be calling you for one of those frag packs!
Steve 10-12-2008, 11:41 PM dang I am already missing it, looks like you cleaned the glass
Yep, just scraped it down a litte, not even gonna bother with the back glass or the overflows, I started on the back glass and was like "**** that"...
Bleedingthought 10-12-2008, 11:41 PM That's what I'm talking about!
Steve 10-12-2008, 11:42 PM You're gonna come over and help me plumb this beat up after I get my sump figured out right?!?
Bleedingthought 10-12-2008, 11:43 PM You're gonna come over and help me plumb this beat up after I get my sump figured out right?!?
What do you think? :)
Steve 10-12-2008, 11:45 PM I would hope you would! Where would I be on my 30 cube without you bro?!
Mockery 10-12-2008, 11:52 PM dude that is nice! And hey i have a Sedra (sp) Powerhead/pump that does 1200GPH at zero head, i bought it and never used it.
glxtrix 10-12-2008, 11:58 PM Lookin good man!
Derek_S 10-12-2008, 11:59 PM Steve. Im so tired. And I didnt hardly do any lifting.
Steve 10-13-2008, 12:01 AM haha I'm worn out too. and I didn't do much lifting either... I still owe you all though! Couldn't have done it without you guys.
thanks Lee!
Skriz 10-13-2008, 12:07 AM Nice! I saw that tank in full operation...it's sweet!
johnr2604 10-13-2008, 12:07 AM I'm worn out just reading about you moving it. Very nice tank Steve.
Steve 10-13-2008, 12:13 AM Raj, you're one of the guys I'm contacting about a frag pack, just so you know!
Thanks John, I wouldn't mind getting some sweet monti's from you for it either...
johnr2604 10-13-2008, 12:15 AM Raj, you're one of the guys I'm contacting about a frag pack, just so you know!
Thanks John, I wouldn't mind getting some sweet monti's from you for it either...Let me know when it cycles and we can probably do some trading. I wouldn't mind getting some more acans for my new setup.

No problem. I'll only charge you double :D
andregarcia_73 10-13-2008, 12:50 AM I love the dimensions!
i love tank as well. i almost bought it .but just decied cant afford rocks ,light ,skimmer, power bill ect all the stuff to keep the tank going. nice buy i love how deep it is.
stacy22 10-13-2008, 7:38 AM I saw this tank when I bought Ankur's lights. Sweet!
Thanks guys
Yeah Mark I know what you mean... Gonna try to buy base rock and live rock to keep the cost down.
LDYBKR 10-13-2008, 9:58 AM Congrats steve. It looks great.
saltwater junky 10-13-2008, 11:05 AM my tank is still bigger than yours
mako0321 10-13-2008, 11:44 AM Steve,
I have alot that I need to get rid of. Let me know how much you need.
Mako0321
strapingyunglad 10-13-2008, 12:30 PM Allways a good sighn wen youve got corraline in the tank before you even add water! Lookin good.
sailfish 10-14-2008, 12:54 AM Move on up to the deluxe size there Steve. That will be a great tank.
Joe
Steve 10-14-2008, 12:56 AM plannin on it joe. Gonna take the muriatic acid to it on Wednesday to get that coraline off and then get the sump and hopefully get it plumbed.
reefscape 10-14-2008, 12:57 AM nice find steve
Steve 10-14-2008, 12:58 AM I'm really happy with it... I've got it right inside the basement door so that's where I'm gonna start coming in and just chilling and watching the tank before I go upstairs after work.
JetChris 10-14-2008, 1:16 AM I remeber seeing that tank at ankur's house. It really is an awseome tank. Congrats on your new venture with it. Ill be looking forward to your build thread.
purpleGORILLA 10-14-2008, 9:34 AM Very nice. I remembered when this tank was still at Marine Fish and I was contemplating of getting it. A week later, I decided to get it and it was already bought.
Steve 10-14-2008, 10:46 AM We can always order you another one Trinh!
molson 10-15-2008, 10:53 AM Thats one serious tank there man. Id love one that size myself, but not sure I'd want the electric bill that came with it LOL.
glxtrix 10-15-2008, 12:52 PM Bah, leave the coraline on there...scrape it when there is water in the tank..or leave it...helps seed the coraline growth faster ;)
I already scraped it Lee, just the back glass, not the overflows. I like the look of the black! Now I need the rest of the peices to the puzzle.
glxtrix 10-15-2008, 1:03 PM Cool, cool.
nickskains 10-15-2008, 6:38 PM Thats gonna be a monster! Grats Steve. Looking forward to seeing it with livestock in it!
Thats gonna be a monster! Grats Steve. Looking forward to seeing it with livestock in it!
As am I. My friend and I just drew up plans for the whole system, drew out how the live rock was going to be placed, we're going to drill the pieces and put rods through em so that we can make some cool formations and stuff. Hopefully we can get the tank plumbed on Friday.... If he's feeling up to it.

Steve 10-23-2008, 12:40 AM So tonight was the night for plumbing, got high off the fumes and burned some nose hairs all around...
Perry and Thiago came through around 7 (again, Canton Reef Club always comes through), we got to setting out pieces for the plumbing of this tank...

And the return is going to get finished up in a few days and then probably middle of next week should have a water test!
johnr2604 10-23-2008, 12:43 AM Looks like its coming along
glxtrix 10-23-2008, 12:45 AM What a mess of fun.
Steve 10-23-2008, 12:46 AM mhm a ton... Plumbing is the best part, seems Perry was the gluing man, I threaded everything, and Thiago cut and laid everything out... good assembly line there.
glxtrix 10-23-2008, 12:48 AM It's proll going to be too short and leaky, lol.
Steve 10-23-2008, 12:51 AM I expect a few leaks, but with that much threading/connections, it is to be expected, Thiago did a good job though, and it turned out good, although messy, I don't think the glued parts will leak if any... We implemented some cool features on it too.
Like unions right below the bulkheads on the drain, so it can be disconnected easily to add about 5 gallons per return to a water change...
And the cross there, the one pointing up is the return (obviously), the one pointing back is for the frag tank, and the one pointing to the front is for the vinyl tubing to hook up for a quick and easy water change from the sump.
Bleedingthought 10-23-2008, 12:55 AM Looking good, Steve. I think we did a good job.
Steve 10-23-2008, 12:57 AM We all did an awesome job. It looks saaaweet!
sailfish 10-23-2008, 1:03 AM Hey things are moving fast and looking good.
Joe
Yep water test should be middle to end of next week and then if all goes well saltwater the week after that...
Gonna just move the fish over to the display and put all the corals in the frag tank and put the light that is currently over my 30 cube on that until I can save up the dough for the 3 lumenbrights.
jmaneyapanda 10-23-2008, 1:06 AM Its too late now, but I learned the hard way that you should never glue fitting without adequate space between them to cut and union in the future, should you need. If space was the consideration, I wouldve used spaflex instead of rigid. Heaven forbid you need to cahnge any of that, you'll have to scrap the whole thing.
BTW, fish are doing awesome.
Good to hear Jeremy. Nothing will go wrong with that plumbing job, the pieces that are glued are glued and sealed tight... No way water is getting out of that thing...

Im not talking about leaking, Im talking about needing to move something, changing something, etc. For example, I recently changed skimmers. I had to cut of the plumbing on my old wne, and had less tha 1" pipe left. So, it couldnt be glued again withour major renovation. Murphy's Law man, it WILL find you!!!
True, we got everything planned out though, I already know what skimmer I'm going with and what not, so I think it can be avoided... mostly..

well, for the next time, always leave enought room to cut and glue another fitting, should you ever need to. Trust me, you will change something at some point.
Got that down for next time! Thanks Jeremy

Every other fitting (and all the major ones, i.e. valves and unions) are threaded. Easy to redo this plumbing if need be. Couldn't have not thought about that. ;)
Bleedingthought 10-23-2008, 9:48 AM Got that down for next time! Thanks Jeremy
We got it down for this time, dum dum! :D
Steve 10-23-2008, 10:23 AM Good. Cause I didn't know where all that plumbing was going!
Derek_S 10-23-2008, 1:12 PM Wow, I havent been keeping up. Looks really nice. For a piece of crap.
what skimmer you going with next?
Gonna go with an MSX 300, same one as Derek's and Thiago's.
Chemically_Balanced 10-24-2008, 8:35 AM So when are you drilling that tank? GET IT DONE SON. It's ur day off so get that thing drilled and get the bulkhead installed. I want water in the thing so you can see all the fittings I did don't leak and every one of the fittings you and Tee taped leaks like butter in the butter factory.

I just got up fool. Give me an hour or two and I'll take it up to Sal... butter in the butter factory... lmao

SLACKASS
Steve 10-29-2008, 10:13 PM Got the baffles into the sump tonight, didn't get the silicone all the way up, just because the wood blocks used for support were in the way, but I'll get the rest of it tomorrow night when I get home from work.

James S. 10-29-2008, 11:05 PM Good job on the sump. I like the use of the clamps!
Steve 10-29-2008, 11:07 PM Thanks James, it was definitely interesting having never made a sump before but I think it turned out pretty good.
glxtrix 10-29-2008, 11:08 PM Looks good...What are you going to do with the corner overflow you took out?
Steve 10-29-2008, 11:10 PM Nothing, you need it Lee?
glxtrix 10-29-2008, 11:13 PM Maybe...I have a tank thats drilled on the side...but I'm thinking of closing that and tossing in a corner.
FutureInterest 10-29-2008, 11:15 PM Wow that plumbing is insane:eek:.
I'm going to be surprised if you don't experience micro bubbles due to cavitation...
Steve 10-29-2008, 11:19 PM I don't think I'll have a problem with microbubbles.
Lee, come by and get it if you need it.
Tomorrow night I'm gonna finish the silicone up and then let it sit till Friday night and then I'll finish the returns.
Chemically_Balanced 10-29-2008, 11:20 PM So you should be able to leak test this thing sometime Friday right?
Steve 10-29-2008, 11:22 PM I will probably start filling it up on Friday but won't be able to complete the leak test as I'll only have a few hours to test since I get off late and go in early the next morning. It will be filled and running with freshwater by Sunday night I'm sure.
glxtrix 10-30-2008, 12:02 AM Yeah I'll swing on by one of these days. Tomorrow night I'm going to be at Jins. You far from him?
Steve 10-30-2008, 12:03 AM About thirty minutes... You have my number right? I'll be home on the evenings on the weekends.
glxtrix 10-30-2008, 12:05 AM You going t be at work tomorrow? If so what time you get off?
Steve 10-30-2008, 12:11 AM Yeah I'm at work tomorrow, I get off after close, so you can stop by and pick it up. I'll go throw it in the car now.
glxtrix 10-30-2008, 12:14 AM Yeah man that would be awesome! What time do you guys close again?
bookysocks 10-30-2008, 5:15 AM
glxtrix 10-30-2008, 9:51 AM Great, I'll be there around 6-630. Thanks a lot Steve.
No problem, see you tonight man.
Filling it with water now.
TriGa22 11-01-2008, 11:31 PM Pics?
Steve 11-01-2008, 11:40 PM Ugh, the left side isn't draining as fast as the right. So I know it's not level it's less than a few 1/16" off. I went out and grabed a ball valve and spliced it into the the drain line to throttle back the amount of water going through it, but then the pump wouldnt start, so I'm at a standstill now. I took it out and cleaned it, put it back in and plugged it in, and still no dice, so I'm gonna swap it out and see if it's just the pump. Hope to have that done in the next few days...
No pics right now. It's just the tank with freshwater in it...
DannyBradley 11-01-2008, 11:53 PM PM'd, but I'll CC some of it into the thread for general knowledge.
"If you want to get them to drain at the same rate, adjust the airflow into the durso overflow. Attach an airline and air valve to the one that is draining slower. Reducing the amount of air going into the durso increases the drain rate. Reducing the air too much results in the water surging through the pipe, which is quite noisy."
Mockery 11-12-2008, 10:56 AM Any progress man?
Derek_S 11-12-2008, 11:14 AM Yeah?
James S. 11-12-2008, 1:25 PM Come on slacker. Wheres the pics!
Derek_S 11-12-2008, 1:33 PM Boo this man!
BOOOO
glxtrix 11-12-2008, 1:36 PM This thing doesn't have water in it yet???? Oh come on!
Derek_S 11-12-2008, 1:41 PM This thing doesn't have water in it yet???? Oh come on!
Not salt water. Thas why I'm recommending we boo him. Everyone.
BOOOOO
glxtrix 11-12-2008, 1:45 PM Hehehehe, I love the "Boooo" statement....I Booo people all the time :)
BOOOOOOOOO!
I'm sure this guy is at work just playing around in the sand....I mean, that's all I saw him doing last time I was up there. BOOOOOO!
Derek_S 11-12-2008, 1:57 PM Me too, especially Steve since he has tough skin and can take it.
GET THE TANK GOING
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
glxtrix 11-12-2008, 2:03 PM I dont know man, he had all kinds of excuses earlier when we talked....sound like a bunch of weak talk to me....
BOOOOOOOOO!
Chemically_Balanced 11-12-2008, 2:20 PM I'm gonna have to throw a BBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO out there also. Tee and I plumbed this thing three weeks ago now and still no water is running in the tank.
BOOOOo
James S. 11-12-2008, 2:30 PM Tee and I plumbed this thing three weeks ago.
Maybe that's why it is not running. :D J/K
Steve better hurry up, he was talking smack about how his tank was going to be running before mine. I'm not too sure about that now.
Chemically_Balanced 11-12-2008, 2:34 PM Maybe that's why it is not running. :D J/K
Steve better hurry up, he was talking smack about how his tank was going to be running before mine. I'm not too sure about that now.
I think he did say something about a leak, but that doesn't take three weeks to fix...and I can be sure any part I put together doesn't leak. I'm a firm believer you can never have enough PVC glue. I was picking it off my hands for days after.
I'm waiting on a working pump. I've got a fine to pay and other things I need to take care of before I can spend some money on this... Soon though. Patrick is working on getting me a new pump.
Bleedingthought 11-12-2008, 10:01 PM Boo

James S. 11-22-2008, 6:41 AM :yay:
Derek_S 11-22-2008, 11:25 AM Looks like you are finally realizing the logistical pains of setting up a big tank.
My 140 was a b, and I cant even imagine these 200+ tanks around here.
Steve 11-22-2008, 12:43 PM I'm still looking for a pump to test the returns for leaks... That and the money issue is the only thing holding me up...
sailfish 11-22-2008, 12:55 PM Steve if we got together we could fish at least one setup. I have all the parts but no tank and you have a tank without all the parts. LOL
Joe
Derek_S 11-22-2008, 1:02 PM Sucks Joe, as I really look forward to seeing your new setup.
As far as Steve's, I shoulda bought that one instead of my 140.
The T-5's are good for the 140 though, I think that they have a little more penetrating power then the MH's though... That's a pretty tall tank for what kinda PAR your T-5's are getting at the bottom...
Derek_S 11-22-2008, 1:30 PM Yeah, I almost want to double check it when the par meter comes. But Joe helped me, and he knows what he is doing, so yay for t5s.
Chemically_Balanced 12-02-2008, 11:15 AM did you talk ^%$^ about gett'n your tank set-up before James.
Bleedingthought 12-02-2008, 7:16 PM did you talk ^%$^ about gett'n your tank set-up before James.
James, and Joe, and I think I'm missing someone else too...
James S. 12-02-2008, 7:30 PM Better hurry! I only have about a month until I have fish in mine.
ace1204 12-02-2008, 8:30 PM Steve, i would have already had this thing up running for a month and then for sale again lol.Just playing bro get some more pics up i wanna see this beast running.
Didn't think I would get a ****ty pump, or a speeding ticket, and have no money for either. I got other stuff to pay for. This is on hold.
sailfish 12-02-2008, 10:07 PM You and T both drive like my Grandmother how did you get a speeding ticket. lol
Joe
Steve 12-02-2008, 10:10 PM haha I do not when I know where I'm going.
Derek_S 12-02-2008, 10:26 PM Gonna throw a BOOO out there, not for you, but for tickets in general.
James S. 12-02-2008, 10:29 PM YUP I just got one last Wed. God I hate giving them my hard earned money.
Chemically_Balanced 12-02-2008, 11:17 PM Believe me they have more of my money than you've all spent on your tanks.
James S. 12-02-2008, 11:52 PM Believe me they have more of my money than you've all spent on your tanks.
If that is the case then I don't feel so bad about my lil' speeding ticket.:D
ya my tab with the marietta and cobb county police is pretty ridiculous... ill have to count but i have either 18 or 19 tickets
Bleedingthought 12-03-2008, 7:54 PM Man, most people complain that I drive like a maniac. I'll take the grandmother comment as a compliment! :)
Steve 01-08-2009, 12:02 AM For the past couple weeks I've been putting this off... A few days ago I realized that I was not gonna have the cash flow that I need to run the tank... I'm starting school tomorrow and my hours at the shop are significantly cut back. I am gonna bite the bullet for sure... My mom keeps pushing me into setting it up and getting the cube out of the living room. I tell her I don't have money to do it right now and everytime her reply is "You have savings". While I have a lot in savings I would rather not use it... But I think I will. I'm gonna keep the 30 cube and set it up as a refugium under my frag tank... I'll use a small pump (Rio 1700) for a pump to the refugium. Then run the drain back into the sump where the external pump is so that the pods can go straight from the fuge to the display. I'll paint all the sides but the front black... and have macroalgae's, mangrove trees, and then it'll also be for a holding tank for incoming fish to be introduced to the water and help them to eat aggresively. There will also hopefully be a quarantine tank on the opposite wall for holding incoming fish before introducing them to the fuge. The QT system will be in the form or something similar to the cubes that we have set-up at MF to display fish, contact me if you have something similar for sale on the cheap-cheap, if I don't find anything here I'll ask the owners of the store if they have any more of those cubes in the shed. If not, I'll go to Woody at Precision Aquariums or MRC... I'll run HOB filters on it and go from there.
Any other suggestions or tips that I can employ?
glxtrix 01-08-2009, 12:43 AM Yeah, put water in it! lol. All sounds good man, hope you can get it up soon :)
Steve 01-08-2009, 12:46 AM Freshwater is in... One leak that I have to fix and once that is fixed then I let it run for a few days or so, and then empty it out and get the dang thing level... Then throw some foam under it and get going. I'm really digging the idea of the 30 gallon being a fuge...
James S. 01-08-2009, 12:56 AM About time you got this going! I may be selling those QT tanks I have. If you want them let me know. I will sell them for what I have in them.
I'll talk to you about it Saturday night... Barbara is definitely coming and a few others may be following me up... Not sure on those folks though.
Steve 01-12-2009, 12:08 AM No more leaks. I'm gonna finish up hooking the frag tank in tomorrow and get everything ready for the final steps.
glxtrix 01-12-2009, 12:10 AM Whoooo Hooooooo!
Steve 01-12-2009, 12:14 AM I almost ran it dry tonight... haha I didn't think it evap'd that much, so I've gotta add about 30 gallons of water to it to get the frag tank running and then figure out a drain for it... Any ideas? I was thinking cutting a piece of PVC pipe in half and have that for surface skimming. Kinda like Thiago's old frag tank....
