View Full Version : coral donor program
blind1993 09-18-2008, 7:19 PM i was reading this and it sounded like we already do part of this but not all and it seems pretty neat and would make the reef keeping hobby much cheaper and we could sort of help save the reefs.
the cons: we might start taking buisness away from our sponsors that we like(ex. Keen Reef)

Soarin' 09-18-2008, 8:39 PM I think it's a great idea.
I don't really think it would take any money away from sponsors, because people are always trading frags anyway.
Where this would really help is spreading the very nice-looking and fast-growing corals like Leng Sy Cap and Tubs Blues Zoas, which I hear are very fast growers but since they are "LE" they are very expensive and hard to get.
With a program like this, we could also compare notes and find out why some do very well in certain tanks, but others do poorly.
We could also spread around beneficial hitchhikers like stomatella snails, mysid shrimp, and the cool little serpent stars, all of which I have never seen for sale.
What this will do is get the better-looking, faster-growing corals into the hands of more hobbyists, not just looking great in one person's tank and then wiped out in the next crash.
Plus, it will make it much easier for people to get back into the hobby after a crash.
LorenK 09-18-2008, 8:48 PM Blind, not a bad idea!
I also don't think it impacts our sponsors.
It promotes "preservation through education."
DrNecropolis 09-18-2008, 9:21 PM Also think this is a great idea...wouldn't mind some tubs blues either lol
blind1993 09-18-2008, 10:38 PM also i think that some people might get mad because lets say the coral brought a zoa nudis or something.
the fix is dip your corals and take at your own risk, but owners if you know you have a pest dont give anything even if that coral is not affected.
Blueeyes 09-18-2008, 10:57 PM how can we get this started? I think it is a great idea.

probably talking to brandon and taking it to a BOD meeting.
btw, i found the linke on the homepage of ARC there is always a reefkeeping thing on the left.
FutureInterest 09-19-2008, 9:08 AM Good suggestion Annce. If we still had +/- rep... I'd be pushing you in the positive direction for a change :). If we can get this going by the next meeting I'll bring a few interesting frags to donate.
saltwater junky 09-19-2008, 9:55 AM so who would the donor corals gotowould be my thing, you cant really give everyone a donor coral.

Maybe something like
I give a frag to someone near me,they give a frag to someone near them and so on..reaching farther and farther.unless I miss the point
saltwater junky 09-19-2008, 10:21 AM oh ok i gotcha

Xyzpdq0121 09-19-2008, 10:36 AM Great find Annce.. I think it would be a great thing. Who wants to bring it up to the BoD and volenteer to be the Donor Program Director (DPD)?!? There is a BoD meeting (http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=19498)Saturday that I can give some time to this idea to.

LOL... Not a chance... My vacation time from running anything for the club is long overdue... Plus, my wife would kill me if she does not get any "me" time once December ends.
blind1993 09-20-2008, 5:55 PM is anyone taking this to the BOD meeting? ifso let brandon know ahead of before the meeting today.
JAustin 09-20-2008, 7:02 PM Too bad i'm down here in South GA. I have Xenia coming out of my, you know what.

you can always give it to someone near you, but i dont even know if we are starting this system.
also i am pretty sure you can make it out here one in a while.
NotiReef 03-19-2009, 12:11 PM So are there any updates for the program Or has it been scratched???
1mbrews8 03-19-2009, 12:26 PM Great idea..
tokejr 03-19-2009, 12:32 PM If this takes off, I'll volunteer to create the MySQL database and records for it.
I think it owould be great and create a wonderful library for growing corals.

JessPete 03-19-2009, 1:03 PM So, it would be a tank of donated corals given out upon request? or a database of available corals, whom they go to, etc?

What I read was the idea that the corals could be shared from a donor, and the party receiving the donation becomes a sponsor - who then passes on all frags of that coral to others.
The most important idea was to track the lighting, growing conditions and tank parameters to build a growing library of coral growth and propagation.
texhorns98 03-19-2009, 1:32 PM I'll donate some Kenya Tree!

I think the database idea sounds better -- that way we can keep track of all the info, and hook individual reefers up to grow the different types and see how they do under different conditions. By tracking who got what when, we could also establish "ARC breeds" that would be known and understood.
We already know the "weeds" - anthelia, gsp, kenya tree, Xenia, that are very easy to grow large quantities of.
But what's the next tier up of more colorful corals that grow pretty quickly and are very hardy? I'm sure we all know of some, but this way if someone finds a great example, we can get it "out there" and established so that everyone can grow it, and then if/when the tank crashes or has a problem, the person that found it can get that coral back growing again.

Button polyps. Not quite as pretty, but good growers while not being a weed.
