View Full Version : What fish or inverts have spawned in your system?

Loren and Dawgdude got me thinking about what other species of fish or inverts have spawned in member's aquariums besides clowns and bangaii's. So, I thought it might be fun to start a thread to list out what species we have observed spawning. If you are actually raising any young, that would be great to know as well! I'll start it out:

Bangaii Cardinals - had them about a year and they spawn every other month. Only raised a couple of fry so far but the male is carrying again. Attempting to raise the brood.

Pajama Cardinals - pair is almost two years in my tank, and have spawned and carrying eggs now, not going to try to raise the fry

Yasha Gobies - pair is over a year in their tank, I have seen the female ripe with eggs on several occassions, and I assume she is depositing them on the top of their cave. I have not tried to collect the eggs to raise the young yet.

Dwarf Flame Angels - this pair is almost two years in my tank, and on numerous occassions I have seen them seemingly spawn in the evening as the lights go down.

Golden Coral Banded Shrimp - the pair is about a year in their tank and the female develops eggs every couple of weeks. I have not observed them hatching.

I am in the process of getting some brood stock of Orchid Dottybacks to try my hand at raising them next.

I don't keep pairs of clownfish but I know there are a lot of those out there. I think it's a tribute to the advancements in our hobby that so many species can be supported and encouraged to spawn in our systems. Thirty years ago I was pretty happy to keep my fish alive for two years, let alone encouage them to spawn!

I have had a pair of mandarins for close to a year that are now spawning.(MOFIB 2008 pt.2 breeders challenge this year, might try if i can get some fresh plankton.)

I have some occelaris that are paired off but not yet spawning(trying to feed twice daily)

My peppermints are spawning(might try raising these).

Ive seen some strange mollusk release a puff of something recently.:confused2:

Bobz, your cardinals are pt.1 of the MOFIB breeders challenge this year. This is a great opportunity to document the breeding , while discussing the success/challenges of raising for each type of fish/invert.

Just the Bangaii baby that you're raising for me. Male Bangaii is due to release another mouthful any day now. Wondering if I should try taking the cardinals out of the main display and put them in a 29g that's been up and running for awhile and then add a LS urchin.

Will the stress of trying to catch the cardinals make the male abort?

All sorts of snails have spawned sending their genetic packets up in "smoke" or laying eggs all over the place. Our cleaner shrimp spawns regularly as does our clowns.

Oddly enough last night I witnessed some worm spawning... the really freaky kind where the worms release the end of their tail and their tail swims around the tank like crazy. There were maybe 20-30 of them... The first time I witnessed this I freaked out, tried to catch the swimmer and kill it :). Although the resultant offspring are probably planktonic somehow they seem to survive...

I have 5 small sun corals growing in random spots and I have pretty blue green striped mushrooms popping up all over the tank.

I am thinking about this as well. I want to turn my 24g into a mated pairs tank. Although I think my pair of scooters is actually two males. I also have a juv pair of bangaii and want a pair of pearly jawfish.

Bob what does the book cover on jawfish? Btw I just realized I have not introduced myself, Im Charlie.

Charlie,

Matt has a section for each species in the book and Yellow-headed jawfish are convered pretty well. You are welcome to come by and check out the book any time you are in the area (or I can bring it to the next meeting too). LMK.

Linda - from what i understand, the male may eject the young early but if he has been incubating for 20+ days then they will be fine. If they are too early, you would need to find smaller foods (rotifers) as opposed to starting them on newly hatched brine shrimp. If you do get the male out and do not want to raise this batch, just let me know and I'll come by and get them from you. My "adopted baby" is doing great and I can probably move him in with the larger Bangaii soon! He misses you and wants you to stop by to see him!

As I am sitting here checking out the ARC forum, my Dwarf Flame Angel pair are dancing up and down the water column, seemingly acting like they are spawning! It is soooo COOL to watch! The male Pajama is still incubating as well, but I thinkg he will be depositing the fry soom, seems like all the fish in the tank are following him around tonight. My Bangaii watch continues as well, I think he is about 18 days. In another two days I'll try and pull him out and move him to the hatching tank. Wish me luck!

My clownfish lay eggs! I'm going to try to raise their young soon.

Hey bobz hey you ever been able to raise any of those flame angles??

bobz

No, they are pelagic spawners and I have never tried to collect the eggs. Way beyond my skill level :) and any eggs released are food for the other fish!

I've had peppermint shrimp spawn in my tank.

(I've also had a rose bubble tipped anemone split naturally.)

MY Pajama Cardinals are on about and every two week spawning cycle now. He just released the fry last night. I tried for pics but all I could get was the male with his mouth closed. One of these times I'll try collecting them and see how far I can raise the fry.

Nubie here, well sort of.
I have a little fish rearing operation near Athens.
I am also sort of involved in the MOFIB Organization listed above.
Currently, I have a few species breeding regularly (mostly clowns and cleaner shrimp). Expanding into gobies and blennies.

Ralph?
What do you do with those pipes?

And Mockery,
Very interested in those Flame angels that you guys mentioned above!
I am trying a new larval growout system that Matt Wittenrich and I have been working on. Just hard to find pelagic spawners that are spawning.

Right!!! If you are a nubie then I haven't been born yet :D .

John - very glad you are part of the community! I'm about to move my pair of Flame Angels to the 210 and I am thinking the extra room (vertically) will help them with the spawning. The 55G is a bit short for them. Also, it looks like the Yashia Shrimp Goby female is ready to spawn again as well. I know you were interested in possibly collecting the eggs. I'll watch and let you know.

My scarlet cleaners are full time egg carriers, and the Bangaiis are starting to spawn regularly.

My pocillopora (a broadcast spawner) is a downright nuiscance in my tank - I have pocillopora frags popping up everywhere on a constant basis...

My Ocellaris are back at it again! Finally. They laid their first batch of eggs since the breakdown about 8-9 days ago. With the new aquascaping, they have chosen a new spot of the eggs and it's near impossible for me to see them clearly anymore, so I won't get to see the "eyeballs" just before the hatching anymore. In their old spot I could watch the entire growth cycle, but now they've moved to the back, and almost upside down, inside a cavern, so the viewing is no good.

Serpent Stars. I have a million of the little rascals in my tank. If you picked up a frag from me at the meeting then there is a good chance you got a hitchhiker serpent star with it.

Are you the one that I picked up the stars from? If so, they are doing great, I think, all I can see are the arms sticking out from between the zoos. From what I can find, this species has brood pouches and release fully developed young. Kind of neat for an echinoderm. And they are great cleaners.

Thanks, and yes, I believe so. They do their "thing" every morning and every evening, but I've never witnessed it.

My rbta did spawn once. It hasn't done it ever since though. And I'm guessing all the tiny eggs died because there isn't any little rbtas in the tank.
