View Full Version : Amazing what you can find on EBay

For grins, I did a search on my last name on EBay's site and came across a couple of 45's recorded by my dad and my uncle when I was about 8-10 years old. My uncle was a songwriter/singer and my dad also performed vocals and played a mean saxaphone. Their band played in nightclubs in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and they tourned in Hawaii and Alaska. They were local celebrities of sorts.

These songs were a big part of my very early years. Kind of cool to find them again.

Do a search for your family name, hometown, etc. in EBay. You might find something interesting.

That's cool! But what are those round black things with the hole in the middle and what do you do with them? They look like flat frisbees

The memories are dim, but I believe they produce music when you place them on a machine with a circular, rotating center.

I'll need to find one of those machines!!

My dad passed away two years ago and my uncle passed away last year. My dad had 4 brothers and 2 sisters and my youngest uncle passed away early this year. Sad that an entire generation is gone, but I suppose that's the circle of life.

I'll have these preserved/framed somehow and pass them along to my kids.

For a hoot, I'm going to try to record them as .mp3's. Not sure how to do that though.

Please don't be sorry. It's okay. The memories are good ones.

:)

So... does anyone have the equipment to transfer music from a record to an electronic format? I think there's some kind of software or something.

Try this:
http://http://www.amazon.com/Technica-AT-LP2D-Digital-Recording-System/dp/B000FB44VA

A turn table with a preamp and connection to record directly to your computer. I've been thinking about getting one myself to take my vinyl digital.

Curious ... what did you enter as the search criteria?

I've often googled my dad (Willie Lowery) and my uncle (Frankie Lowery) and their band (The Four Scores), but get no hits.

And this is not my dad (or my little brother of the same name):

We have native American ancestry, but we're Cherokee.

You don't by any chance have 12" vinyl of 80's - 90's club music, do you?

You can buy a usb turntable for just such a task..
As far as framing..I buy lots of records to this day..(Bleeding through, Tiger Army)
you can goto Michaels Crafts and they carry LP and 45 frames..Kinda like a shadowbox..but for records..

wow it is neat that they found a way to DIY records on DVD's yourself, I wish they would come up with a way to DIY with the home movies (reel to reel) I have some I would like keep for my kids.

My Mom had all of our reel-to-reel (Super 8) home movies put on video tape and gave copies to my sister, brother and I for Christmas one year. I believe the VHS can now be converted to DVD somehow, but I've never tried. Because the format is now VHS, the quality is not great, so I'd be interested also in transferring from original reel-to-reel to DVD. With today's technology, there must be a way to do this.

If you go to a music store they sell software pretty cheap. All you would need then would be a cable from your device to the mic input on your soundcard. Not really the best way but it works. You could also look into a program called cakewalk and an interface. It costs a little more but thats the optimum way to get any analog signal into your computer. This is the program I used when I had my little home studio set up.
