View Full Version : My 24 Pod from start to present...

Well one year and 3 moves later my pod now survives in my parents living room in Lilburn. Hopefully it will be making another move within the year to a place of my own but in the meantime i can try and convince my parents to help fund my habbit. I have included pics from the start (august of last year) up until the present. As you can see the tank has had its ups and downs, yet i am pretty happy with its current state. I have two fish that i would prefer out but that will likely wait until the next move. So here it is...my 24 gallon pod with 150 sunpod 20000k xm bulb.

I made some changes today in regard to the flow of the tank. I added a koralia 1 and koralia nano and no longer have the maxi jets hidden behind the rocks. The flow should be higher but less intense...which is what i was going for. I have also removed the lemon angel and the lunare wrasse (thanks Bobz and congrats on your baby bangaii's). I also added a HOB fuge with a deep sand bed. I noticed before adding the fuge that my rocks were infested with copepods. I plan on having the fuge set up for a few months and then trying my luck at a pair of mandarins. I believe my pod population could handle them now but I want to give it some time to seed the new fuge. I will add some updated pictures either later tonight or tomorrow.

Sweet pod!
Hey is that a feather duster...or a Coco worm?
I have heard that Coco worms demand a more calcium rich environment. I have one of those hawaiiian feathers. But its not as cool as that.

It is a coco worm. I recently got a second one that is twice as large. I am going to try and get a video of them feeding, it is very cool to watch.

Staying open 24/7 now. The tank looks kinda lonely though with just the clowns sitting in their nem all day. New fish need to be added soon.

Akopley

The clowns are the current residents. The two outcast are a lemon peel angel and a lunare wrasse.

To the people who suggested Marine Fish...Their prices took me by surprise but i did make one really good deal i think. The manager had accidentally broken off a piece of green monti from their display tank and sold it to me for only $10. They had comparable pieces of the same size in their sale tanks priced over $100. Here are some pics and an updated FTS.

Are you for hire? Your aquascaping abilities are amazing. I'd give anything for the rockwork in my 28 cube to look half that good. At least I have an example to strive after now.

Seriously, major kudos.

Hey, I bought a Coco Sunday and it only comes out occassionally thus far. It was out this morning before the lights came on. Is it just acclimating? Might a damsel be picking on it?

Also, this tank is spectacular. And I redirected my Koralias in hopes that it didn't like the flow.

Mine typically stay out but throughout the day they will recede for short periods of time. I recently learned that they are short lived in captivity typically only lasting a year at most. My oldest one has been in my tank for 5 months and looks the same as the day i got it. I dose DT's every night so hopefully that will help them survive as long as possible.

When you say you like watching the coco worm feed, what exactly are they eating?

I am assuming its some sort of micro-organism they catch in the water stream (phytoplankton or something). It looks like a towel wringing itself out...if that makes any sense. Pretty neat.

So when it gets all shrivelly looking.... That's what mine does. I've only had mine a couple of months but absolutely love it. Hope it lives a long, happy life.

Question.. I have GSP next to some zoas and the GSP is winning. But I don't know how to get the GSP off the rock because of the way it grows. Any technique advice would be greatly appreciated.

Akopley
01-26-2009, 8:22 PM
I really don't "frag" too often but GSP are pretty easy to trim back. I use my fingernail and just scrap it off. It feels like goo but it stays together pretty well...i'm sure you would be better off scraping with a razor blade though. The goo can be placed anywhere in the tank and a few days later it will start extending polyps. I normally just let the fragged parts float around until they settle. My tank is bare bottom so my goal is to eventually get the bottom covered in GSP, Zoo's, and button polyps. Don't be afraid to scrap em off, GSP are a tough coral and will recover quickly.

Yeah, GSP should scrape right off. I usually break off a piece of the rock with a hammer (late at night after the polyps have closed, or early in the morning before they open) and from what I've heard from people who've gotten a few of them, the frags have done well after that.

My goal is to eventually get the bottom covered in GSP, Zoo's, and button polyps.

You should try and grow a red/blue tomohawk in the GSP so it will look like the designs behind home plate at Turner...

Let me just say first that I wish one day my tank would look half as good as your does...it's beautiful.

Let me ask you a few things that may help me...
1. How often do you do water changes?
2. Have you had to move about some corals because other corals are too aggresive?
3. How often do you change the MH bulb?
4. Is the bioload of 4 fish too much for the skimming system or do you have an actual protein skimmer in the back?
5. How do you deal with jumpers?
6. How do you deal with water evap/.?

Thanks,

Akopley

Sorry I just noticed this,

1. How often do you do water changes?
Bi weekly, 5 gallons
2. Have you had to move about some corals because other corals are too aggresive?
Yes and No. I have some corals that begin to encroach on others and I will make adjustments, they are not showing aggression just growing.
3. How often do you change the MH bulb?
when i start getting odd algae growth i typically associate it with the bulb...around 10-12 months.
4. Is the bioload of 4 fish too much for the skimming system or do you have an actual protein skimmer in the back?
I have a HOB fuge and a skimmer rated for a 65 gallon tank. The water changes help keep my nitrates in check so I don't think 4 fish is too much. I only have 3 currently. 2 percs, and a 6 line wrasse (great lil fish)
5. How do you deal with jumpers?
Don't buy them.
6. How do you deal with water evap/.?
I manually top off everyday. I sold my auto top off when i got rid of my 90 gallon system...i miss it but the nano is pretty easy. If i start getting busy with work i will likely add an ATO again.

Sorry for the lack of music. I was working on my dad's editing computer using a program called Edius (great program) and my music options were limited. The transitions came out nicely as did the motion blur at the beginning. I shot the video with a Panasonic DVX100A DV cinema camera yet the quality was greatly reduced when I converted to mpeg from the original avi file. The camera is not HD but much nicer than my current digital PnS which features a broken auto focus. I got my eye on the Nikon D5000 SLR, but I am not currently willing to sacrifice food and all forms of social life to ascertain it.
