I have the same camera. The auto focus will not get in close enough for goos Zoa shots. I get around the fact by putting the LENS on manual and focusing by hand. Works OK . One day I will get a Macro lens and all will be well. Here are a few shots taken of my tank with my D50http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l216/familyreefer/DSC_17781129.jpg

Oh yea, my avatar was taken with the D50 on vacation this summer in Fla.It really is a lot of camera for the money. All the stuff you need and none of the BS you probably would never use anyway

It takes pics so fast theres no lag between when you press the button and when it actually takes the pic.

did you use the manual focus?

Vettesarebest

did you use the manual focus? No i didn't use the manual focas because i couldnt figure out how to actuallly use it. I know how to change the two switches but not actually focas it. I used the Flower setting on the Knob and then i zoomed in on them but i didn't get to close or else it got blury so i kept the camera far away but zoomed.

To manual focus do as you did and turn the camera AND the lens to "M" Then simply turn the small ring at the end of the lens. That's it. Good luck with your new camera. I am sure you are gonna love it as much as the rest of us do!

Just had to comment here.

I decided on a D50 a couple months ago and said I would get it for a Xmas present for myself. Then my friend just got one and he was raving about how great it is and how great the shots are. But, I had the willpower to resist buying it early and waiting until Xmas.

Then, as usual, I get on here and check the daily threads and BAM!, here's this thread about how wonderful the camera is and how everyone and their mom has one and how they love it so much.

So, last night, I ordered mine from Wolf Camera on sale.

You guys pushed me over the edge. It's all your fault!

We should also add a D50 subforum here and have a secret handshake and have our own meetings and all..................

(I suck at resisting peer pressure)

Thanks guys, now I will be able to take great photos too.

OK, I think everyone is convincing me that the d50 is THE Christmas present of the year. I have a question, though, will the d50 accept lenses from my regular 35 mm nikon camera?

Vettesarebest
12-08-2006, 1:41 PM
i believe it will because the d50 is a 35mm. Yeah it was my b day present and it was my only one but it was more than worth it.

Whoa, the D50 isn't a 35mm (which refers to the film size). It IS an SLR (single lens reflex) which operates in the same manner. The sensor size is a little smaller than 35mm film, however. For this reason, you'll get a narrower field of view with the D50 (or any other digital SLR) than you will with a 35mm SLR looking through the same lens. To compensate, digital SLRs come with a smaller focal length lens (usually a 18-70mm). Assuming your Nikon / Nikkor lenses are autofocus, they should work, but again, you'll get a narrower field of view.

Hope this helped.

Oh, and my .02- Sorry to all Nikon fans, but for the money I like the Canon Rebel XTi. 10 megapixels, large LCD screen, and anti-dust system. Plus it's compatible with all Canon lenses, including their SI (anti-shake) line.

well then i feel really stupid lol my bad dont listen to me lol anyways i thought the rebel was like 800.00 THATS ALOT. the d50 also has a dust thingie but i have no clue how to use it.lol How much is a good macro lense for my d50

wbholwell

for a macro lens this is about the cheapest around- be careful, though- I've heard these lenses aren't that durable.

Thanks for the responses.

Wbhowell - so if I stick an 80-200mm zoom lens for 35 mm camera onto a digital camera, it will act like a 120-240mm lens? I'm thinking about getting the d50 cause I already have a nikon 35 mm and several lenses for it - thought I could use my old lenses with the new camera for more versatility.

Hey thanks for letting the little left-out boy into the cool kids club. :)
I have a few zoa's that I recently bought off RC. I really like them but they may be a little while until they are ready to frag. Dont worry I will let you know. The first two varieties that I bought (came on the same rock) have grown really well so I know that I can at least grow zoas pretty well.

I believe you can use a 1.6x conversion factor, which would make your 80-200mm lens seem like a 128-320mm lens on the D50.
