View Full Version : New Store!! (Finally)
tim8111 06-27-2008, 5:47 PM So, I am finally ready to start the construction of the new store. I have attached a picture with the proposed floor plan.
I am signing the lease on Monday, as soon as that is done I will post the address and a link to Google maps. If the lease goes through Monday the new store will be at the corner on Lawrenceville Hwy and North Druid Rd in Decatur.
I will make this my "build thread" and post pictures as the store progresses.
I am also working on getting a new website up as well (time consuming).
The store will be stocked and ready for business August 1st and the Grand Opening will be Saturday August 9th. Of course, if anyone needs anything before then contact me and I will see what I can do for you.
Thanks again,
Tim
Linda Lee 06-27-2008, 5:49 PM This is impressive!!! Love the hospital and Q/T set-ups.
Looks like we can count on getting healthy livestock from Keen Reef.
Looking forward to the opening ~ ~ Please keep us posted.

tim8111 06-27-2008, 8:46 PM Are you going to have any livestock/frags/etc. for sale on your website?
Yes, It will be a while before the website is fully up. I am working on it now. All the livestock will not be put on the website until 2 weeks after they are through the QT phase. This will give my local customers first pick as well.
This is impressive!!! Love the hospital and Q/T set-ups.

I will still sell the livestock in the QT system, but at least you know I have had it for 2 or less weeks. My goal is to cut down on the death of my livestock in my customers tanks, I feel the only way to do this is through proper initial care of the animal from the stresses of shipping.
Sweet!!!!! Buy why are you so far away???????????????
This location is only 12 miles down 78 from my old location. Not that far. It is only 1.5 miles off I285. And it is in the perimeter. :) (Now all the people that wanted a LFS in the perimeter have one.) :D
Congratulations Tim. I know this must be very exciting for you! I have always been impressed with your active participation in this club. I wish you the best of luck in your new endeavor. Your lay-out looks super impressive too!
My activity in this club will only increase as well. The better I do from a business standpoint, the better I can contribute to this community. i.e. donations for raffles, etc...
Thanks for all the support and kind words. Please let me know if you guys have suggestions of what you would like to see in a LFS. I can't guarantee I will implement them, but I will if they are beneficial to me as a businessman and you as my customers.
Thanks,
Tim

You left out the beneficial to me and you part.....Well I guess it would be beneficial.... :)
Seriously though, suggestions that don't require additional licenses, permits, or other government paperwork would be better. :D

Victor626nj 06-28-2008, 2:05 AM lol i agree with barbara
you can serve without a license if it is done on invitation only :D
Barbara 06-28-2008, 2:16 AM But you must have male strippers too. Otherwise I'm not going to show. I don't drink beer, but I have been known to ogle under the right circumstances.:D

tim8111 07-02-2008, 7:44 AM so when do you think it will be open?
I am shooting for 1st weekend in August, might be delayed a week or two depends on how quickly I can get everything put together.
OK, so you picked up the wood, but what about the pole?
It not in the budget. But if I have any money left I will get one. :D

tim8111 07-06-2008, 9:38 PM Just finished Painting the walls today. It is coming together. I have half the stands built and the tanks should be in by the 17th. I am getting 9 400 Watt fixtures in tomorrow. If anyone wants to stop by, feel free to do so. I will be there most days unless I am out picking up new items. :)
Call me first though, 678-524-4080.

Sounds like you have been busy. Congrats! Can't wait to see the new shop.
Hey Tim, my $.02 - when I walk in a fish store the first thing I like to see is a nice display tank. Dry goods won't give you any "Wow" factor. :)
Also, wouldn't it help you in the long run to separate the corals/invert systems from the fish systems? Putting them in both systems seems like more risk as shipments of each come in.
Great news, looking forward to the opening Tim.

Great news, looking forward to the opening Tim.
The floor plan has changed a little, I am going to put my 150 DAS tank in as a display. I figured that your average hobbiest doesn't have the budget for a 500 gallon and the 150 shows the new hobbiest that you don't have to have a massive tank to fit what you want in it.
The problem with separating the corals and fish is that would require at least 2 more systems, which means 2 more sumps, skimmers, pumps, etc. Therefore increasing cost significantly, and will cause me to raise my prices. I feel that through proper husbandry and using hospital tanks, I should reduce the risks of incoming diseases. And as far as I know the majority of fish and coral diseases aren't able to infect both at the same time.
Thanks for your input please let me know if you have any other questions or comments.
Thanks,
Tim
Haha will you need any help setting up? Ive got a little bit of LFS experience and Ill accept payment in cash or corals ;)

Yea it is 7 days a week, the store hours will be 10 AM to 8 PM. I have an employee, most of you already know him.
Help on the 17th would be appreciated, I will be more than glad to pay you with a free frag or something. :)
tim8111 07-11-2008, 7:17 PM Here are some pictures of the new store so far..... Victor and myself have got a good bit of the build out completed.
James S. 07-11-2008, 10:20 PM Man those are some LONG stands. Can't wait to see some tanks on them.
Skriz 07-11-2008, 11:05 PM This is going to be a monster store! Can't wait to see it when it's done!
WILLIAM1 07-12-2008, 3:18 AM :wow2: :wow2: :wow2: Ya man I cant wait
tim8111 07-15-2008, 7:52 AM So, the tanks have been delayed to the 24th of July. So if anyone would like to come by on that day instead of the 17th to help unload the tanks, I would appreciate it and I will pay you with some store credit for frags or other livestock.
We got 9 of the 15 400 Watt metal halides up and running yesterday. Here are some pictures. The bulbs are the ones the halides were shipped with, I will not be using them with the tanks.
Thanks,
Tim
Looking good Tim.....Who knows what Ill do...lol
purpleGORILLA 07-15-2008, 12:45 PM Very nice...
James S. 07-15-2008, 12:49 PM I see you used unistrut to hold the lights ,Good Idea! You do have the Unistrut supported with all-thread or something from the ceiling deck right and not just laying on the ceiling grid?
Bleedingthought 07-15-2008, 2:24 PM Very nice!
tim8111 07-15-2008, 5:30 PM I see you used unistrut to hold the lights ,Good Idea! You do have the Unistrut supported with all-thread or something from the ceiling deck right and not just laying on the ceiling grid?
Yes, it is supported with all-thread from the bar joists. I then attached eye-bolts to the unistrut. Actually Jason, Rockdog on the boards here is the one that doing the wiring in the store. (One has to know their limits :D )
It is going to be a lot of light in the store:
15 - 400 Watt Halides = 6,000 Watts
5 - 250 Watt Halides for the 150 Display = 1,250 watts
6 - 130 Watt CF Fixtures for Invert tanks = 780 Watts
88 - 40 Watt T12 for general lighting overhead = 3,520 Watts
Total Watts = 11,550 Watts
I am replacing all the T12 diffusers with eggcrates and replacing all the bulbs with new T12s that give a nice white light.
On another note, I got an order of Dry Goods and Equipment in today, I have a lot of Seachem chemicals and test kits, Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure, About 100 bottles of Ocean Nutrition Pellet and Flake Foods, Several types of Substrates, and a Reef Fanatic Auto-Top off, along with some more stuff.
If anyone needs anything feel free to give me a call.
Thanks,
Tim
Rockdog 07-15-2008, 5:32 PM Yes the strut is on all thread. It is run up to the bar joists. I HATE fiberglass!!!! Just 6 more to go....
Jason
James S. 07-15-2008, 5:37 PM **** sounds your going to have a hell of an Elec. bill there Tim. Good Luck.
I'll be needing about 500 lbs of Substrate soon. Can you work me up a price? Want something in the 1-1.5mm size. Not too fine but not too big also.
Bleedingthought 07-15-2008, 5:58 PM Tim, you got any flatworm exit?
And did you give up on the 1000watters? :D
tim8111 07-15-2008, 6:29 PM **** sounds your going to have a hell of an Elec. bill there Tim. Good Luck.
I'll be needing about 500 lbs of Substrate soon. Can you work me up a price? Want something in the 1-1.5mm size. Not too fine but not too big also.
I would reccomend the following 2 choices:
Carib-Sea Special Grade Reef Floor 1.0 mm - 2.0 mm 40# bag $31.99
Carib-Sea Argamax Select 0.5 mm - 1.5 mm 30# bag $26.99
These are my regular prices, I can't really discount them to much more than what they already are. But if you buy 10 or more bags, I will see how much I can deduct.
Tim, you got any flatworm exit?
And did you give up on the 1000watters? :D
Yes, I got several boxes of Salifert Flat worm Exit. They are $14.99 each.
The 400 Watt MH were a good price and they are all uniformed, that was the main reason I went with them.
Thanks,
Tim
tim8111 07-16-2008, 11:33 PM Got the 2 ReeFlo pumps in today and took some pictures of the new water storage tanks. Slowly coming together.
Skriz 07-16-2008, 11:41 PM why is Victor peeing in the corner?
tim8111 07-16-2008, 11:44 PM why is Victor peeing in the corner?
That is him looking in either awe at the size of the water tank or wondering how the hack we are going to plumb it :D
So you going to come help unload the tanks on the 24th?
By the way you still looking for a crosshatch pair?

If you can make it great. The suction cups are good on large tanks, the majority are 50 and 20 gallons. Seems like a waste to use them for those size tanks. :)
Thanks,
Tim
Victor626nj 07-17-2008, 8:23 PM I encourage everyone to stop by the store we have been working many hours and have done alot ....what sucks is that we still have alot left to do but we will get it done soon for everyone to see

They are some 20 gallons that are 17" deep for the larger corals and colonies. The 4' X 4' are only 7" deep
I live right off of Bells Ferry Rd. It's not that far of a drive, really. :)
It is a lot closer than my old location. :)
James S. 07-18-2008, 11:43 AM I would reccomend the following 2 choices:

Is this live sand in bags or just dry sand? I need about 500 lbs so i will needs approx 15 bags. I'd like a mixture of the two. Maybe 5 Select and 10 Reef Floor. Shoot me a Price. Thanks
TriGa22 07-18-2008, 12:30 PM I live right off of Bells Ferry Rd. It's not that far of a drive, really. :)
Its an hour away and 45 miles. Thats $40 in gas (My mom would drop me off and then drive back to get me), So for me to go there I dont want to just put up a picture and then leave. I would like to stay for 5 or so hours and get alot done, thats all I am trying to say.

That is the dry sand. If you buy 500 pounds from me, I will give you several pounds of my super live sand in my tanks. :)
I will work up a total price and get it to you this weekend.

Victor626nj 07-31-2008, 10:36 PM we are hopping to house a couple thousand animals :D
That is really amazing.... not to be nosy...but how do you pay for something like this????
Victor626nj 07-31-2008, 11:29 PM you do all the work your self and try to get the best deals possible we have been working hard and long hours
Bleedingthought 07-31-2008, 11:31 PM That is really amazing.... not to be nosy...but how do you pay for something like this????
The bank does! ;)
tim8111 08-01-2008, 8:55 AM Yes in this case it was a bank loan. :) And as Victor said, a lot of long days, I have worked a minimum of 12 hours each day for the past month and looks like several more weeks of that. :) But it is all good, I love this hobby and this is what I want to do. I have found that if you do a job only for the money, it is not fulfilling.
We will have at least 1,000 fish, 750 corals, and probable 5,000 or so other inverts when we get fully stocked. We will also have a good selection of dry goods like food, additives, coral fragging tools, etc.
Also, the temporary banner sign should be installed today. I will post pictures later.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks Bob, feel free to stop by anytime. If you want to check the store out before we open.
I will be getting the first round of orders in next week. I am planning an order from my Florida collector(snails, crabs, few carib fish), ORA, and a small order from one of my wholesaler(mainly live rock). The following week I will get a large shipment of corals and fish from the pacific.
Also, on a side note. My store is sorta like a warehouse club or the home depot. The stands are basic and the fixtures and furniture are basic, they do what they are designed to just not fancy, etc. I am gearing the store to be an online retailer and in order to keep prices competitive and give my local customers the ability to pay online prices with the local pickup, I decided not to put thousands into making the stands fancy.
I will have a nice display tank and the livestock will be of the highest quality but all the other bells and whistles are not here. I figured this was the best for the business and you my customers. Basically you don't go to The Home Depot and expect it to look like a high end boutique store. :)
Thanks,
Tim
Don't change a thing! You rock dude.

WHere's the pole Timmy? That's the only bell you need...

Well I was going to install one, but DeKalb county told me I would need to get a special permit. :) Seriously though, It is amazing how hard it is to get a business license in this county.
I will make sure that the next expansion includes one in the budget.

The trochus will not be in until the week after next. I will have ceriths, astrea, vibex, turbos (mexican and vietnam), fighting conchs. I will also have scarlet reef hermits and dwarf blue legs, emeralds, sally lightfoot, and other crabs. Peppermint shrimp will also be in (I ordered 80) and these are the wild caught caribbean versions.
Here are some pictures of the temporary sign:
fair enough, Ill be by to get some cerith and vibex then, get the trochus later.
WILLIAM1 08-01-2008, 12:18 PM Wow its looking great I cant wait. Vc has been telling me good things.

Cool. Looks nice enough to be permanent. ;)
heh, yeah leave it, knock another buck off the prices :p
we are cheap dates.
tim8111 08-01-2008, 9:18 PM We decided to fire up the pump and test it out on some tanks. Mind you it was only pushing a 12 foot spray bar, 8 nozzle outlets, and 1 1" line for bleed off back into the sump(the ball valve was fully open). Ohhh, And we throttled it down about 2/3 on the main valve off the output side of the pump. Here are some pictures of the massive micro-bubbles :)
tim8111 08-01-2008, 9:23 PM More pics and videos. The pump will be much more quiet once all the valves are opened.
heh my computer doesnt like your vids.
thats some serious water you got there.
have you kept a running tally on how many leaks so far? :p dont lie, I know there must have been some.
Skriz 08-02-2008, 12:07 AM they're only 4 second vids showing water coming out of the returns.
sailfish 08-02-2008, 12:29 AM How many leaks did you have to fix?
Must not be to many Victor was still smiling.:)

Actually other than having to retighten the bulkhead on 2 tanks and the outlet side of the pump has a small drip at the threads(I believe that is due to the pressure of throttling the ball valve back)
they're only 4 second vids showing water coming out of the returns.
Yea I didn't want to make a 1 minute movie and not be able to upload it. I will make a longer one on the next tank filling run.
How many leaks did you have to fix?

Yea not many. It is nice to be able to add some water to the tanks. I will add another 160 gallons today.

Yea, you got to watch it too, it might jump and land on you if your not careful Raj. :lol2:

You need to host one of the meetings when you are all nice and stocked up....I hate it that you are soooo far away.
tebriel 08-03-2008, 7:57 PM Oh crap, you're 4.2 miles away from me. This is gonna' be really really bad for me, good for you though. Well, good for me too, but still bad!

I would love to but it might get a little crowded to have a real meeting here. I would love to organize some events and gatherings though. I will still be at the meetings selling my livestock like I have in the past.
On another note they are building a banquet hall in the parking lot and I am going to see if we can get a meeting there and I will open the shop after the meeting.
Oh crap, you're 4.2 miles away from me. This is gonna' be really really bad for me, good for you though. Well, good for me too, but still bad!
Thanks, I think. :D Well at least you will save a lot in gas at only 4.2 miles. :)

I need to change the signature line that was for the "house" store. Once we officially open someone will be here from 11 AM to 8 PM 7 days a week and then it is come on by anytime.
Until we open I am here from about 7 AM to 9 PM trying to get it ready, but I also have to go to the home depot( like 1 million times a day!!!) or pick up this or that for the store, so I would advise calling first. However if I am not here chances are I will be back shortly. :)
Zapped82 08-03-2008, 9:45 PM Definitely looking forward to the opening of this store, it's going to be great... :yay:
I don't know if any of us should have been driving after all the PVC cement fumes but I think we all made it back ok. I know I will be spending way too much money here in the future!

Yea the PVC Cement smell is awful. But I only have to suffer through a few more days and the main system will be operational. :)

Also we will be open this Friday.
Thanks,
Tim

Those are both good reasons and I thought about moving them but was to lazy. :) They are also the only place to sit in the store as of right now.
