All right, here's an update...

As some of you already know, I lost some of my favorite larger SPS colonies late last year. I couldn't pin point a direct culprit for the losses, but I have several theories as to what could have happened. To say the least, IT SUCKED!

Well, after the losses, I pretty much let the tank run idle just doing what was needed so that nothing else would be lost. I lost interest for several months and almost gave up on it, but for some reason around March I got the itch again... boy was it tough though. The tank had to be cleaned up and all of the lost corals had to be removed if I planned to bring it back around. I spent the better part of 2 days cleaning and pulling out what had died. I still had several SPS colonies left, but I decided I was going to take the tank in a new direction.

I fragged out a lot of what I had left and started picking up some of the more limited edition pieces to replace what I had lost. The tank started to once again come to life as I slowly added pieces. I also made some changes on the equipment side, the key piece being my Alpha 250 cone skimmer. This thing is a beast and pulls some of the nastiest skimmate I've seen to date. Here's an updated sump shot:

Sump Area

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/244268/180%20Gal/SumpArea.jpg

I've still yet to put the doors on my stand, they're sitting right next to it just waiting. I just like being able to see what's going on under neath at a quick glance, but I'll be putting them on soon.

I've got my huge Deltec kalk reactor plumbed in, it works great. I've owned several different types of kalk reactors, but I definately prefer the stirrer type... just wish more manufacturers would go this route. I've added a precision needle valve to the outlet of my Koralin cal reactor to give me better control of the drip rate. I've also plumbed it and my sulfur denitrator to the displays return pump for a more positive pressure feed. The final equipment upgrade for a while (yeah right) should hopefully be shipping out to me next week. I've pre-ordered a Neptune Systems APEX controller for the tank. It will allow me to control a lot more than my current RKII and help eliminate some of the stand alone controllers I've got running now.

I'll post a few updated tank shots here shortly...

Hmmm... just had some questions come in about my T5's and I realized I hadn't posted any info on my current setup. I actually picked up Camerons 60" IceCap 660 retros back when he got out of the hobby and combined them with one of my 48" spec ballast retro kits to have a total of 8 bulbs. Angled down on the front side of my canopy are 3 of the Current USA Power Brite LED modules which add an incredible amount of shimmer to the tank.

Here's some diagrams... the first one is a top down view and the second one is a side view of the inside of the canopy which shows the PowerBrite's pointing down at an angle into the tank from the front.

Top View

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/244268/180%20Gal/T5NewSetup.jpg

Side View

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h46/244268/180%20Gal/SideViewOfInsideCanopy.jpg

When all of the T5's are firing, the tank is very bright white with a pinkish purple hue. After the daylights go out, it looses the 2 Pro Colors and the GE 6500k which results in a very nice blue hue.

Lovin him, he's one of my favorites! Sucks though, I lost my other one about a month ago. Not sure why, possibly survival of the fittest, but according to everything I read they were supposed to do good in pairs.

Clams are doing great, but definately killing me on the cal/mag. Mongo's still gapping a little, he's the only one that gets thouroughly pissed when I move him to clean.

Unfortunately we lost Trooper the Idol last year. I added a few fish to the tank and shortly after he deveolped what appeared to be Dropsy. He quit eating which, as you know, was very unusual for him. He hung in for several weeks as I tried different treatments, but none of them helped and we lost him. My son had claimed him as his own and needless to say it was a very sad day.

He really was a trooper though, especially after all he had been through. Still to date he is one of my favorites that I've had the honor of having in my tank.

No jacking at all... FWIW, until I recently hooked up my Apex I hadn't ran a heater in years. Tank actually seems a little happier when it's cooler. When it starts to warm back up seems to be when I have issues.

Sounds good... :D possibly harder for nuesances to thrive also. :confused2:

I know in the spring time when the humidity and temp start to creep back up, I have a few patches of Cyano show up. It's funny, you can see it in the posts on a lot of boards. Folks start asking how to deal with Cyano right around the same time, I bet Boyd's (makers of Chem-Clean) see it reflected in their sales.
