View Full Version : A little smaller Monster... but it will do.
Harleyguy 03-09-2008, 3:42 PM So I decided to start a new thread, for the new tank. I'm not going to go into whole long winded story about how this came to be, if you would like to see where I started you can check out my previous thread:
http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=12543
This is my new tank:

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh221/Mr_big_reef/Tank%20stuff/8433IMG_0577.jpg
The tank is 96"x48"x36" ~719 gallons the stand is steel wrapped in Oak. There is a single overflow with external Tunze Wave boxes (holds 1 Tunze wave box and 1 extension). I also picked up a 260 gallon sump:
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh221/Mr_big_reef/Tank%20stuff/8433Sump.jpg
I also picked up a Deltec AP902 that I will most likely use just until I get something bigger (I'm thinking about the Korallen Zucht KZ Large or a Nice Volcano... time will tell) then I'll be selling the Deltec (It's not rated for a tank of this size).
This tank will go in my living room and act as a room divider. It will divide my foyer and the living room. The tank will be viewable from 3 sides (two long sides and one end). I intend to have a hood built to match the stand.
The funny thing is I designed the exact tank (only 8 inches narrower) 3 years ago. I dug out my crawl space in preparation for the fish-room and everything. It's funny, it's almost like this was meant to be.
I will be using most of the equipment that I have already purchased for the big tank, some I will have to change, but that's not that big of a deal. I will not meed as many Tunze streams, but I will need 3 more 6201's than I have, so I will be selling some (if not all) of my 6100's (I have 8). I plan to get a grow-out tank and set-up a QT tank (nothing will go in this tank without a thorough QT). I will need a chiller (Tradewinds is the only brand I will get). I have my AC III Pro. I have all the pumps I need. So I need rock, sand, salt, and Lighting... and the last of these is where I have come up with a wild and crazy idea... more to follow....
ericmcj31 03-09-2008, 3:45 PM cool, keep us posted!
Big D 03-10-2008, 10:21 AM I say you pick up the 900gal that's posted on craigslist here locally and I'll make the drive to VA to get this one. :D

LorenK 03-10-2008, 10:42 AM Wow. The sump is bigger than 95% of the tanks here.
That is going to be really nice.
mapleredta 03-10-2008, 11:02 AM did you get the shark to?
Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 11:03 AM Big D do you have a link to the tank on Craig's list? I never use that thing so I really don't know how...
Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 11:04 AM No I did ask though...LOL I thik he has a nice new home...
Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 11:06 AM I did find out that the tank and sump were built by the owner of Ultimate Aquariums for his own house. He said it is perfect, not a bubble in any seam anywhere. :D
mapleredta 03-10-2008, 11:08 AM looks great man
EnderG60 03-10-2008, 11:52 AM Ha that is basicly the exact same size as the display at CBA!
See now you could get away with just using 2 1000w halides.
Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 12:07 PM CBA? 2 1000W MH's give enough spread?
EnderG60 03-10-2008, 12:39 PM cappuccino bay aquarium, hit them up when you get in town. Yes a single 1000w in a luminarc 1(big flying saucer looking one) will easily give you a 4x4 spread. Just depends how much intesity you want. Think of it this way a 1000w in that reflector will basicly be the same(or a bit less) then 4 250w bulbs each covering 2x2, but with a really bright spot in the middle under the bulb.
Way I see it the simplest lighting options for that tank will be 2 or 3 1000w's or 6 or 8 400w's, and whatever suppliments you want.
Here's a link Harley...

He sent me a list of everything that's included in the sale, he's got some nice stuff. His price is high, but still under half of what it would cost new.

Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 1:47 PM What are the tank dimensions?
Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 1:48 PM I'm just curious, I'm very happy with the tank I have.
It's 120" x 48" x 36" and 1.25" thick. Here's a link to Tenecors site for the Ultraquariums. He said it's a peninsula tank, viewable on three sides with the overflow on one end.

The stand is square tube steel that's powder coated and he had it custom covered in mahogany. With the stand it stands 9 foot tall. I'll pm you the equipment list he sent me.

Harleyguy 03-10-2008, 2:59 PM Nice stuff, but did you see he is only running 4 400W MH's... I must be over doing it...LOL
jgilley84 04-30-2008, 9:05 PM any update ?
Sprayin70 04-30-2008, 10:15 PM Sweet find. Hope it goes well for ya!
blind1993 04-30-2008, 10:54 PM i find it quite funny that the mag pump looks like an MJ400 in that tank.
ericmcj31 04-30-2008, 11:28 PM good eye, Blind, I thought it was a MJ! until I looked closer! LOL
Harleyguy 05-13-2008, 11:53 PM Jess and I went by Cappuccino Bay this weekend to pick up some frags and look at their tank. Before we got there I told her that they had a tank the exact same size as ours so she was excited... that is until we walked in and the end of that monster was right in front of her. She was in aw at the size of it... then I think her exact words were... "Man that thing is huge... you're crazy" LOL :D
She kept saying it's too big, it's too big... I have to admit it is really huge and the pictures really don't do it any justice. I also think the hight of the stand on Cappuccino Bay's tank really make it look a lot bigger than it really is (at least that is what I told Jess). I will be picking the tank up the first week in June and we will see what she says then. If she still thinks it's too big I will have a couple of options:
1. Cut the tank down and make it narrower (like 96x36x36 538 gallons)
2. Build an addition onto the house
3. Sell it and buy something smaller
4. Put it in storage and wait until we build again
5. Set it on fire and make s'mores
6. Big turtle tank (we have two tiny box turtles)
7. Swimming pool for my kids
Also if I do keep it I still need to resolve the lighting issue.
To be continued...
Rockdog 05-14-2008, 12:48 AM my vote is #5. Let me know if there is anything I can do..
Jason
Harleyguy 05-14-2008, 11:01 AM I bet #5 would make a big pretty flame... Not sure on the tast of the S'mores though...
Thanks for the offer Jason, I'll let you know if I need help.
Harleyguy 07-27-2008, 2:29 AM So I have been away for a while...so here is an update.
Things don’t always work as planned and I'm living proof. After getting back from Iraq I started my new job with the Guard. The problem is that I work in Elberton and live in Habersham. The problem here is that it takes me 1 1/2 hours (each way) to get back and forth. My wife and I talked about moving, but due to her job and some other issues we decided against it for a couple of years. So I am currently renting a place in Elberton (during the week) and coming home on the weekends. As you might imagine this isn't the best situation to be in while trying to build and maintain a huge tank. My wife still wants me to set it up (especially since it got here and she saw how nice it looks), but I really reluctant to set it up if I will be moving in the next 2 years or so. So at this point I have 3 options:
1. Say screw it and set it up (but do it in a different place than originally decided so that it would be easier to return the house to a non-tank state)
2. Keep the tank and put it in storage for a couple of years.
Or
3. Sell the tank and have something made to fit my new house when the time comes
I'd love to hear some opinions on this.
Thanks
andrew30101 07-27-2008, 2:56 AM I am kind of in the same boat, I knew ahead of time when I moved into the place I am in now I would be moving in a year. I have a 220gal just waiting to be setup. It is killing me not having it setup, but I think it is the right choice, I have about 4 months now until I move and I couldn't imagine having to move it along with all the rest of my stuff. I do wish I would have setup something small in the beginning just to hold me over, but with 4 months left I don't think thats going to happen. If you think you can get most of your money back from your tank I would sell it and then buy something that is custom to your new place and do it right. You will have a couple years to plan it all out. Thats what I have been doing. So thats my story, good luck with the decision.
blfuller123 09-12-2008, 1:39 PM What did you end up deciding on?
Harleyguy 09-12-2008, 1:53 PM selling the tank...
