I posted this on the Site Suggestions Forum also but figured I may get better response here. Are Animated avatars possible on this site? They are funny as hell and would be a fun addition to this site.

View Full Version : Animated Avatars? James S. 01-16-2008, 11:22 PM I posted this on the Site Suggestions Forum also but figured I may get better response here. Are Animated avatars possible on this site? They are funny as hell and would be a fun addition to this site. Skriz 01-16-2008, 11:59 PM They would be cool. Cameron 01-17-2008, 12:13 AM Animated avatars are considered rude on most forums actually. Nothing worse that staring at the same animiation over and over while you are trying to read. They are slightly better than flashing banners, but not much. Skriz 01-17-2008, 12:18 AM that's because you haven't seen my dancing Yoda avatar...it rules! Amici 01-17-2008, 12:26 AM Im with Cameron. I am WAY to ADD to read with little avatars bouncing all around. LorenK 01-17-2008, 1:25 AM The answer is no, mostly because you double posted! I'm mixed on the subject. We'll see what others have to say on it, including our webmaster Mojo. Btw, I'm going to merge this with your other thread in the suggestion area. Hope you don't mind...it should leave a shadow topic. mysterybox 01-17-2008, 2:59 AM animated is fine by me! I won't lose any sleep, however, if it doesn't happen! tnyga 01-17-2008, 7:56 AM I sa Yea...Poll it if its an option James S. 01-17-2008, 10:38 AM The answer is no, mostly because you double posted! No need to be rude! I just noticed that the Site suggestions thread was a bit dead after I posted there. I mentioned that in the other thread. It was the first time Ive even noticed that section of this website, and those posts dont show up on the recent threads on the home page. Thats cool everyone has got there own opinions,I just thought they were funny. Im not sure how they would be considered rude unless you have no sense of humor and are a bit too serious about a online forum. Of course they would have to be sensored, but I still think they would be fun. Maybe the MOD's here dont have time to babysit and sensor animated avatars? I dont know just figured i would ask. Atleast I still have my animated fishy swimming around my 125 Gal. Crappy Reef. Cameron 01-17-2008, 10:44 AM The problem is people end up putting flashing crap for their avatars and it can be very distracting. Somebody will put on a very annoying avatar and you will see exactly what I mean by rude. Animated ones that are subdued are fine, but a lot are just plain annoying. Good news is I can always go back to running without Avatars so I guess I am good either way. LorenK 01-17-2008, 2:17 PM Sorry, I meant to put lots of smilies. Didn't intend to be rude. It was more of a joke...but I should no better to joke here :-) But these do show up in the new threads (that's how I saw your first one). Might not show up on the home page...I didn't check. Back on topic, my issue with animated images is that I use my mobile (Treo) to read the site and it's a pain to download larger images. I have a great one that I use on another site...but it would be quite inappropriate here (mario and the princess, lol) And Mysterybox...you should have seen the dancing bear christmas lights at my friends house! No need to be rude! I just noticed that the Site suggestions thread was a bit dead after I posted there. I mentioned that in the other thread. It was the first time Ive even noticed that section of this website, and those posts dont show up on the recent threads on the home page. mysterybox 01-17-2008, 2:29 PM And Mysterybox...you should have seen the dancing bear christmas lights at my friends house! mojo 01-21-2008, 4:37 PM Oops- I just saw this one. Here's my take on it: There are a few design criteria that I tried to stick with when I laid out this site. One of them was to focus on the content over the graphics, even if it means limiting what each person has displayed when he/she posts. It's really annoying (to me, anyway) to go to a forum, and have to sift through a bunch of nonsense to find the actual posts. This is why pictures aren't allowed in the signatures. While it'd be cool to see small pictures of people's tanks or something, only 1% of the people will do that, and we'll end up having to sift through pictures. Try reading a car forum for some good examples. More importantly, as Cameron said, it's just really hard to read the post if you have a bunch of things jumping around to the left. I fully understand that people want to customize and be themselves, but it was setup the way it is for to allow for the best readability. Once Loren gets the picture gallery up and going, people can post whatever they want there. Until then, I'd really, really rather see we let the posts stand out- that's why people are here to begin with! BeesBaby 01-21-2008, 6:25 PM Animated avatars are considered rude on most forums actually. Nothing worse that staring at the same animiation over and over while you are trying to read. They are slightly better than flashing banners, but not much. But isn't that we are currently doing right now - looking at the same avatar over and over because it is a still shot? At least the animated ones gives a little respite. But either way is okay - read down to Cameron's first take and replied before reading all the others and can see the concern. Zanski 01-21-2008, 6:58 PM I wouldnt mind it Cameron 01-21-2008, 10:27 PM But isn't that we are currently doing right now - looking at the same avatar over and over because it is a still shot? At least the animated ones gives a little respite. But either way is okay - read down to Cameron's first take and replied before reading all the others and can see the concern.Animated avatars (well some annoying ones anyway) are like flashing banners. If you allow people to post their own avatar they can post something like this: http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/cute.gif oh wait no more like these: http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/1.gif http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/2.gif http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/3.gif http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/4.gif http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/5.gif http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/6.gif LorenK 01-21-2008, 11:12 PM best animated avatar of all time: http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/7517/coolasva6.gif Others from my game site: http://hometown.aol.com/edoublez/images/6f1a709f.gif http://forumninja.com/uploads/avatars/202_9286924046ae12cdccffd.gif http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c26/treadhead1944/ShowLetter.gif My brothers corny avatar... http://forumninja.com/uploads/avatars/2_197359803246db43406d384.gif http://www-personal.umich.edu/~brownaa/files/beardance.gif http://www.minoguetech.com/members/teya/Board%20Avs/lick.gif http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c189/britab/sticks.gif http://members.lycos.co.uk/thatjesusguy/OMG.gif http://turbilhao.blogs.sapo.pt/arquivo/Calvin%20And%20Hobbes.gif http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v196/Anubis_IV/FROG14.gif http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/playmaker187/Woman-falls-down-cellar.gif washowi 01-22-2008, 12:01 AM Here is mine.... Its just too funny!!! I love the animated!!! Click the link http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e370/perrythompson/boom8fo8ne6xy.gif LorenK 01-22-2008, 12:10 AM Todd, love that one. I miht have to use it on my game forum. haninja 01-22-2008, 12:22 AM Home made http://h.haviv.home.comcast.net/~h.haviv/nemo.gif Cameron 01-22-2008, 12:37 AM Those are pretty cool Loren, but I stand by the fact they aren't condusive to reading posts as they are highly distracting and add a somewhat low rent feel to a forum. However, we can always turn them off so go for it I guess. mojo 01-22-2008, 12:43 AM I think this is one of the first times where Cameron and I are in complete agreeance! ;) BeesBaby 01-22-2008, 8:39 AM Animated avatars (well some annoying ones anyway) are like flashing banners. If you allow people to post their own avatar they can post something like this: http://www.cameroncole.com/digital/gif/cute.gif oh wait no more like these: I would think you being a guy would love to have a young, very attractive young lady smiling and winking at you ?!? BeesBaby 01-22-2008, 8:40 AM Nah, that *would* be a distraction - you'd be slobbering all over the place. So you and Mojo stand correct - No animation on avatars is the best. tnyga 01-22-2008, 8:47 AM Im in lust....did I say that out loud lol Actually anything that young looking at me would be called a daughter lol I like the animation but I kinda agree some are annoying... LorenK 01-22-2008, 9:31 AM I'm not advocating them...just listing them. Some of them are pretty annoying, like the gecko or the calvin and hobbes. Pesonally, I like my avatar so not planning to change it. There were definitely some that I could not post...as it is I thought one of them might be pushing the limit for a fish forum. Those are pretty cool Loren, but I stand by the fact they aren't condusive to reading posts as they are highly distracting and add a somewhat low rent feel to a forum. However, we can always turn them off so go for it I guess. LiveRock27 01-22-2008, 9:53 AM Loren, I had to steal one of the avatars that you posted. If anyone asks I promise to give you all the credit  LorenK 01-22-2008, 10:27 AM Haha, I stole those myself! washowi 01-22-2008, 2:51 PM I can't see any reason for the life of me why funny avatars would be distracting unless you have A.D.D. or some other eye disorder which does not allow you to control your eyes or mind....:) But I will leave it at that....:) I like 'em. LorenK 01-22-2008, 3:05 PM Anything would be less distratcting than your current avatar! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: I can't see any reason for the life of me why funny avatars would be distracting unless you have A.D.D. or some other eye disorder which does not allow you to control your eyes or mind....:) But I will leave it at that....:) I like 'em. washowi 01-22-2008, 3:38 PM too funny....:) Steelers! Skriz 01-27-2008, 11:17 PM ok, change my mind. They're annoying. It's like there is a flashing ad on the side of the page. |
